The time has finally come! Firmware 2.40 will be releasing July 2nd!

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today that the highly anticipated Firmware 2.40 update for PlayStation 3 will be available for download on July 2.

This latest update adds the highly requested XcrossMediaBar (XMB), allowing users access to the PS3 menu at anytime during gameplay by hitting the PS button on your control pad.

Using this functionality, gamers can check to see if any of their friends are currently online, send and receive messages as well as changing various settings without having to quit your current game.

As promised, a Trophies system has also been implemented, which acts as a means of tracking the number of achievements that the player has accumulated. In addition to Super Stardust HD, the following first party titles will offer Trophy support:

-BUZZ! Quiz TV
-LittleBigPlanet
-MotorStorm Pacific Rift
-NBA 09 - PS3
-PAIN
-PixelJunk Eden
-Resistance 2
-SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
-Warhawk

Great to see and all... but seriously: ANOTHER update? it seems like every time I put a new Blu-Ray or Game into my PS3 I have to perform a system update.

Am I alone here, or is anyone else over the rapid-fire updates? 1 per quarter people, please!

The PS3 hasn't been out for extremely long; you kind of have to expect them to work out the kinks step by step.

Besides, what's so terrible about going through a simple update process?

I actually kind of agree. I don't think they should limit themselves like Microsoft does, however I've hated seeing updates like the 1.36 one, where the only thing it does is "stability" They could have not released that one and just added it's changes to this 1.4 one. I definitely think Sony is too firmware update happy, but on the flip side I feel like Microsoft is very update lazy. Meaning, it seems like Sony is almost constantly working on updates to improve the ps3, whereas Microsoft for all we know could spend a month before the update release to actually make it.

In any case, the update is good news for the PS3. Though, I'm not that excited, though I've never really seen in-game XMB as a needed feature.

I'm fine with frequent updates, just like Mac OS X, no matter it's security/stability update or introduce any new feature. Why should it be limited by a schedule?

My only issue with the frequent updates is the fact that they don't seem to be incremental. The downloads seem to take forever and ages to install compared to the quick 5-10 seconds they take on the 360.

umm... That's because Microsoft does a software update and Sony does a firmware update... and trying to compare them is not a good idea. I agree though, it's frustrating that Sony went the route of firmware updates (even though it gives them more control over changes) and that they release them frequently.

I was looking forward to the update, but the new FAQ they released on it yesterday kind of took that excitement away.

It's still a big update for sure, but it still has ways to go.

Ah, so you were looking forward to things that were never announced or even hinted that we were getting? Not surprising considering everyone I've heard complaining about not having the in-game XMB only said they wanted in-game XMB, messaging friends in-game, and the music stuff.

I hope I didn't offend you in some way. I was under the impression that with the in-game XMB, certain features would come along such as having in-game XMB for PS2 games and DVDs. I then assumed that it would allow me to have online access during said game and DVD and therefore be able to watch a movie or play a game while downloading a Demo or movie trailer in the background. Of course, these assumptions came from the fact that Sony didn't go into detail when they announced that in-game XMB would be coming and therefore I got my hopes up. When they finally released concrete info about the in-game XMB, I was disappointed. I do sincerely apologize for my mistake.

There are some games that do not kill your downloads.. I don't have a list of them, but I know that I've started downloads and then jumped into a few different games, and sometimes the downloads are done when I exit the game, and other times they aren't. I want to say that MGS4 and BF:BC do not kill downloads, but I'm not 100% sure about either. There are other, older games as well.. But like I said, I'm unsure which ones.

Nope, you didn't offend me in any way. and really, I can understand being a little disappointed. Though at least you are not like some of the people I have heard that apparently now hate Sony because of features missing. But, you are correct Sony didn't tell us much of anything about the in-game XMB, which was their mistake as it made people expect certain things, like it being the full XMB experience. Anyways, sorry if it seemed like I was jumping on you about it, but I also wanted to point out that a lot of people made assumptions that were not what was released.

dolson, I think you are correct some games don't force downloads to stop. Though I wish there was a way to tell my PS3 that I won't be using the internet and to continue downloading, like in GTA4. I'd really like the downloads stuff to get an overhaul. It needs things like reordering downloads, background installing of demos/add-ons, etc.

agreed. there are way too many ps3 threads by njshadow. just today, there are 2 2.40 threads started by nj on the first page, not counting the hoard of other 2.40 stories hes posted in the past 2 months. but also a agree with wes, NJ is a bit of a fanboy.

On a side note, any one else not impressed by 2.40? in game xmb is really slow and choppy. and there are reports of it bricking ps3's. Sony has already pulled the update. what do you guys think and have any of your ps3's been bricked?

jc-magnus

2.40 is a decent update. To be quite honest, I never really cared about the whole in-game XMB deal. Sure, it's cool and all but when I play games I don't really care about going back to the menu to see what people are up to, or to play custom tunes.

I downloaded the update via the Playstation website and I had no problems with the install, but Sony pulled the update from the site and the PS3 due to apparent bricking issues with some PS3 owners.

The whole Trophies thing is cool, but with only one title supporting them right now it's kinda hard to get THAT excited over them, even though Super Stardust HD is an amazing game. :)

Bring on the PixelJunk Monsters Trophies!!

40GB model, not bricked. SSHD update did restart my PS3 once, but it went fine the second time. I got 7 trophies in under an hour, and I'm about 3/4 of the way to level 2.

I really wanted in-game XMB for two reasons - if I get a message while playing a single-player game like Oblivion, I hate exiting to read it, and the other being forgetting to switch between Rock Band's mic and my headset. Both of these are fixed, so I'm happy with the update.

I hope more PSN games get updates ASAP.

That's because they've pulled the update until they can work out why it is bricking some PS3's.

I've got a 60GB model and the update seems to be working fine. It restarted after the update itself, and then again after the SSHD update.

It's cool. I'm not hating Sony or anything. The update is still a good and much needed one.

The trophies are great, for the one game I got that it's utilized with. Haven't touched SSD in ages until now and I forgot how good the game is. I'm hearing, at least with Burnout Paradise, that some developers are making their trophies retroactive, so it we won't have to play through a game again. I can see the bad in that, but at the same time, I don't want to play through a game a second time through when I got so many other ones on my plate.

yep and now everyone that did do the update and didn't get bricked feel the need to tell everyone about it. The bricking, as far as I can tell, happened to a few of the tons of PS3 users. Sony probably wants to be safe and not risk having it cripple more systems, so they pulled it until they can correct the issue. This isn't a wide spread issue, and Sony is making sure it doesn't become one.

You can download it and put it onto a USB drive... Get it from www.ps3hax.net if you really want it.

Or just wait for Sony to put up a fixed version.

The problem seems to be that some people have corrupted downloads, and the integrity checks are being skipped (some kind of bug, obviously). Those with corrupted downloads are seemingly seeing a black screen of death, as the PS3 tries to run the corrupted update. If you have the ability, and this is the case for you, try using another hard drive (or formatting the one you have in a PC if you have no important data on it). This will allow the PS3 to boot without trying to run a corrupted updater. Obviously it's not a fixable thing for everyone with the issue, but maybe someone will be helped by it.

I'd just like to comment on previous comments regarding NJShadow and any threads he starts regarding the PS3. Seriously, I don't see a problem. We have mods to merge threads if there's duplicates and there's nothing wrong with a fan sticking up for his console of choice. There's certainly no reason why PS3 news should have a single thread, just like there's no reason 360 news and Wii news should.

In that regard, there are FAR more threads started all the time, like "Movie: Wanted." Every week (probably multiple times a week, actually), someone starts a thread about a particular movie or game. I recommended MONTHS ago that we try to get threads sticky'd, with names like "Radling Reviews: Movies," "Radling Reviews: PS3," etc. NO ONE replied. I mean, speaking of the movie Wanted, we have 2 threads floating right now, NOT including the new episode thread, where I'm sure it's also discussed.

Neither of those threads (including this one) were started today. They resurfaced, in response to the update being released.
