OK. single now. ex used to cut my hair, and before that a "friend" in exchange for... never mind... anyway, since ex and me broke up, either cut my own, (pretty damn well, if i do say so) or had friends just shave me down to almost nothing. But now I got Valerie Bertonelli hair, and it must go away. Going to find a real barber this week, but worried that I don't know what to tip anymore. been so long. any ideas? and what's standard haircut cost these days anyway? thanks.

I pay 14 bucks for my haircut and tip $2 so thats about 15%. 2 or 3 bucks seems fair IMO.

However, when it comes to tipping at restaurants I'm a little more generous. I give 18% (20% if he or she is good) or a minimum of $5. So if I go out to lunch and get a bowl of soup for $7 I'll leave 5 because anything less doesn't seem like it's even worth tipping. Then again, I wait tables so I'm sympathetic. :D

if there is a vidal sasoon near you go there

they cut hair for movement

it is the way the hair moves that makes it look good (sexy)

tell the cutter your ideas about style

like me i'm wash and wear i don't do blow drys or gels

they have a sliding scale cost based on the seniority of the stylist

Spending most of the last 15-20 years in diners has taught me that if you're going to be a regular customer somewhere, tipping well is in your best interest. Granted, I might go a bit above and beyond (I don't tip less than %25 unless the service is bad). As far as my hair is concerned, the last time I cut it myself with my beard trimmers (won't be doing that again) so no one else is to blame for that. :p

Do what I do, lie face up on the lawn, camouflaged, wait for neighbour to cut his lawn :D

I have never been a percentage tipper. I tip five dollars, going up or down based on the service I received and not the price. My hair looks nice and you cut it for $5 (which doesn't happen, I pay around $20) I'll give you a $5 tip. My hair doesn't look like what I asked for and I paid $30, you get $2 to nothing. Same goes for restaurants. Keep up with refills if you'd like a good tip. It doesn't matter if I ordered the salmon or a piece of toast.

I wish you were only joking.

And tipping sucks. I do it, but I only like doing it when the person deserves it, not because they expect it, that's just retarded.

I had 5 bers and 2 shots the other night at my bar and the bartender at the end of the night said, "I don't know $10" !!!!!!! I gave him $26.

um, lookin for a haircut, not a Continental Lifestyle.

what you want is for your hair to look as good as it possibly can within the limits of its natural tendencies thin thick curly straight whatever

and for your hair to look good all the time

they can deliver exactly that

but if you don't want that then.....

i tried :)

What's a hair cut?

it is roughly equivalent to hems on pants

the neater the hem the more formal the pants ;)

My haircut is basic and hasn't changed in the past 20 years (college cut, straight across the back, no sideburns, #2to crown, blend through with scissors). I jump out of shower, towel dry my hair, then brush it straight back. Its a style I got into when I used to wear hard hats every day.

Problem is, the way my hair sits has changed, so now instead of getting a barber to cut it I go to a salon. Not a high end salon, just a place a step
above a Fantastic Sams.

I figure with tipping, my time is worth something as well. If the cut costs my $18, and I am out of there in 30min (inc a wash), a $5 tip isn't too bad. Otherwise I stick to the rule of thumb of 15%-20% ($3-4).

that's what i've been trying to convey

the way your hair sits or moves is the tricky part

i go twice a year to the same guy i have gone to since i met him at vidal sassoon 12 years now

i pay $90 and give him a $20 tip he's the best in town

i'm a girl i have long hair but other than the cut and washing and conditioning i never do anything to my hair

and i never have a bad hair day ever

$90 sound like a lot, until you think that I get my hair cut every 4-6 weeks (its grows fairly fast), so costs is is the same ballpark annually as your haircut.

exactly and remember i do nothing else to my hair

no blow dryer no crling things no special expensive products and no time

if i were going to the academy awards i would need just the dress and shoes no hair stylist no makep artist

how many women put no extra effort into their hair that you know

i'm shower to street in ten minutes

See, my friends dad does the opposite. If the hair cut doesn't take very long he feels as thought it was rushed which means they possibly did a crappy job. If it's longer he feels as though they took their time and put more effort into it so he'll tip more if the barber takes his time and doesn't rush.

I used to have this really cute, fairly short, spikey hair style which took quite awhile to style, and involved the use of several products and velcro rollers. I probably spent almost one hour on my hair alone.

Now that I've grown my hair out, it's simply wash, towel dry and DONE. I love it. No hair products, no blow drying.......sigh, why didn't I think of this years ago? Whoever says long hair is more work than short hair is a liar! Well at least in my case. :p

it makes one side equal to the other and the edges get trimned in a nice symetrical pattern :)

yes

you are just afraid it will end up short

so you ask for a consultation tell him / her what you want

i would go for a her

i go to a guy

it seems the opposite sex works out better as far as listening and understanding

you want the sides the same length and you want it straight across the back

it is really plane geometry

and then you ask the person to show you exactly how much it is necessary to cut

tell him / her you might get seriously upset (look tough while saying this) if it is any shorter

i can remember crying about my hair and chopping away at it at 3 am in the bathroom with cuticle scissors

i never do that anymore

because i made it my business to find an ally

Hmmm I really don't care how my hair looks. I have no fashion sense or anything. I wear jeans, t-shirts, or scrubs(cause they are cheap and comfy). :D

No offense meant, but did we really need the "haircut handbook" up there? Are there seriously people out there who don't know how to go to a barber and get a hair cut?

I just meant that these days you can go to a barber/hair stylist and they tend to ask you what you want. As long as you know what you want, I don't see there being that much of a process to prepare for it.
Like I said, Skyz, no offense meant. it was an honest question.

no offense perceived

i just know from personal friends that most people angst about their hair

second only slightly to about their weight or state of fitness

My mom used to say to me as a kid, "What's the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut? Two weeks."

I pretty much go on that now. I figure that I can deal with two weeks of a bad haircut till it grows out. It's helped a few times. haha

I usually stick to two weeks. I get my hair cut fairly short IMO (number 3 on the sides with the trimmer and scissors on top) but I think it looks better shorter which is why 2 weeks is perfect.

Speaking of which, I got my hair cut today. The total was $14 and I gave $2 for the tip. I don't get my hair washed though (personally I think its a little creepy having someone wash my hair) so I always do that myself before I go.

Well, she said it to my dad who always had a crew cut. Within two weeks it would grow out just enough to get it cut again.
Seriously, though? You get haircuts every 2 weeks? I guess that makes sense for guys. I'm lucky if mine gets cut once a year.

I'm lucky if mine gets cut once a year.I get a haircut every 4-6 weeks ... depending on my onsite meeting schedules. If I get a bad haircut, I need to wait 3-4 weeks for it to be at a point it is recoverable with another cut - something to do with the way my hair grows near the crown (I have a full head of hair, but it grows in different directions around the crown with can make it a bear to cut).

If I have a bad haircut, and I don't have any meetings (and it has happened twice in the past 4 years), I wear a hat in public. I often wear a hat (a brimmed hat something of a cross between an Indiana Jones style fedora and a small brimmed cowboy hat) in public so its not an odd thing for me to do - especially in summer.

Phatty - #3 every two weeks? Go for a #2, or just shave it off.

Perhaps we can ask DannyT how long it takes a bad haircut to grow out (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28194924@N07/) ;)

... and that is why I will never let MY wife loose anywhere near me with clippers or a pair of scissors.
