View Full Version : Gaming: Genre Gems

Let me start off by saying I hate FPS games with a passion. I hate the fact that I can't see wtf is shooting me and I hate the way the controls work, especially on consoles. With that said, I bought a copy of F.E.A.R. for the pc when it was released; mainly because it was a survival horror game (my favorite genre). It was an ok game considering I'm the type of gamer that can be compared to hardcore granny (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/11303). So, once I got to the office building I just hit god mode and went from there. It still didn't get me into liking FPS games.
A few weeks ago I picked up Condemned 2 with my PS3. I have to say that it is the one FPS game that I totally love! The controls are easy to work with and even though I spent most of the game fighting with fists or melee weapons, I had a purely fun experience. They just got every aspect of the game right. Even though I died more times than I can count, I didn't get frustrated. I also liked the fact that there was no god cheat for the game as strange as that may sound but it allowed me to appreciate the experience that much more. It's the kind of game that has changed my views on the FPS genre. So, my question is: Is there a game you picked up that turned you on to a genre that you normally wouldn't like; a genre gem for you?

I think you're too picky and you whine too much.

Um...okay.
1. I didn't know expressing an opinion was whining. If that's the case, we are all whiners.
2. I think I posed a valid question to the forum.
3. I guess I am picky when it comes to FPS because that's a genre that I don't really get into.
4. Why did you even waste screen space with a reply that even a n00b wouldn't post?

I think you're too much of a dick for someone who's been here all of two days.

If you don't like FPS games, don't play them, simple as that. No one's forcing you to like them, or even to try them for that matter. If it's that hard for you to enjoy a game, stay away from it.

I really loved FEAR (PC), a quick aside; by god mode are you talking about the 'bullet time' slo-mo stuff or an actual god mode cheat (I didn't even know that those existed anymore).

As for your question, I would have to say that Dawn of War and Company of Heroes both got me playing RTS games again, it wasn't a genre that I 'hated' per say just one I hadn't really been into since probably Red Alert (maybe Starcraft I can't remember which one I was playing last).

For starters, you seem to be missing the point...he's not whining about hating FPS games, he used that as a background to point out he found one he loves. Had he not tried that one, he'd be missing out on it.

I might agree with you if the post was more along the lines of "picked up Condemned 2...it sucks too"

I loved FEAR too (looking forward to Project Origin) but felt devastated by Extraction point...only reason I finished it was because I put on god mode and unlimited rocket launchers because I was pissed at them. Perseus Mandate was a bit bland, too. I do disagree with the OP about the God mode thing, I miss it in some games...simply because trying dozens of times and countless hours to get passed something seriously sucks. There's no feeling of accomplishment for finally getting beyond such things, and having the ability to have help via such 'cheats' so I can continue enjoying the 95% of the game I was enjoying doesn't see to be asking much. (I'll be the first to admit I outright suck at games.)

Edit: Can't really think of any that changed my mind or that I liked in a field I didn't like. Admittedly, I'm not fond of console FPS, and never really interested in RTS...though I play some console FPS games, and I guess Evil Genius and/or Dungeon Keeper 2 could qualify as an answer for RTS games. That and I'm not fond of MMORPGs, but am mostly having fun with Age of Conan.

You did read the other half of his post right?

In regard to the post, I can't say too much. I like most all genres and can't think of a game that made me change my mind on one I hate.

I read "I hate FPS games because I can't seeeee what's going on around me and they're just terrible and I can't figure out the controls and just eewwww". Great, he found one he likes. Still pretty whiny about minuscule things.

1) I believe we have a troll in oiur midst, whether this is intentional trolling or just honest assholery, it's pointless.

2) Games that are genre gems for me:

Sensible Soccer (I don't like football or football games)
Wing Commander Series (I don't like flight sims)
Bioshock on the 360 (I can't stand to use controllers for first person shooters, normally)
Sonic Adventure (all other platformers should be 2D, except maybe Mario 64)

man.......

Gotta tell you guys this, I only come to this message board because trolls like this don't come here. The second these boards become littered with internet trash like the poster above this board will lose all its charm. Not sure if we have a Mod in here but could someone please take out the trash???

To the Original poster, sounds like you have just realized not all FPS's are created equal my friend. May I be so bold as to recommend another one?? BioShock!! It is a beloved title for me and it's alot less about controls and more about storyline.

What he said. ^

I've never liked racing games, but I freaking loved Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing.

My genre gem choice, though, is actually MVP Baseball 2005, from EA Sports (before they lost the right to the MLB license). I don't likes sports games, or sports in general, but I LOVE that video game. It's very fun to play with a friend, and the Dynasty and Owner modes are amazingly deep, fun, and satisfying. I don't recommend it to anyone who is not a major baseball nut, or someone -- like me -- who used to be very into baseball and has a deep understanding of the game.

The game is actually very accessible and fun, so maybe a casual baseball fan would enjoy it, especially since you can pick it up used for like 4 dollars. A non-baseball fan might actually enjoy it too, because if the gameplay is good, you can like a game without being a fan of the subject matter. I love Mario, for example, and I am not a fan of smashing boxes with my head, eating mushrooms, and kicking around turtle shells. (Okay, I am done rambling now)

This might sound odd, but for me it was an online flash game. I've never liked turn based rpgs. I've tried several of the FF games thinking that I must be missing something, but they always just annoyed me. However, after playing for about 10 minutes I got completely hooked on Adventure Quest (http://www.battleon.com/).

I'm the same way about the FPS genre. Overall it doesn't appeal to me, but games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Unreal Tournament are some of my favorites.

I'm not into sports games all that much either. But I really liked the NFL2k games on the Dreamcast, NBA Jam and NFL Bitz (to a certain extent).

The same goes for traditional RPGs. A few I do enjoy are the Dragon Quest series, Golden Sun games and Pokemon.

Lastly the fighting genre isn't one I'm a huge fan of either. But I am a huge fan of these games. Killer Instinct series, Mortal Kombat 1 & 2, Soul Calibur 2 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Why is it with this forum that every time someone disagrees with someone, they're instantly a troll?

I don't generally like racing games or car games at all, but there are two games that I really really love - Excite Truck (Wii), and Burnout Paradise (PS3).

Why is it with this forum that every time someone disagrees with someone, they're instantly a troll?

Not reading someone's post entirely, not contributing to the conversation whatsoever, and insulting by way of name calling is not "disagreeing."

Not liking a genre of games doesn't make you a whiny complainer. I don't like Japanese Role Playing Games, I don't like Airplane Simulators, and I don't like Driving Sims because it's not my personal taste.

Everyone has their tastes, and nobody reasonable is going to call you a picky whiner if you prefer cheetos and mountain dew to brussel sprouts and green tea.

I'm waiting for that one to hit the PS3 later this year. A friend of mine rented it a while back but he returned it before I got a chance to play....then his damned 360 broke. He really seemed to enjoy it and said it's got a story that I'd really be into.

Another gem for me would be Age of Empires. Didn't really like RTS until I played it then went on to Civilization.

A gem for me was Starcraft, I was never a big strategy game player, tried games like Dune, Warcraft, and Command and Conquer. I didn't get into them, that could be however because I was young, and would have skipped Starcraft, a few of my friends told me to give it a try and I had a blast with the game. I now play a few strategy games and that's because of Starcraft.

Ah, forgot it wasn't out on th PS3 yet?? shame, it is out on GFW if you're interested. If you are just getting into RTS's check out Empire Earth 1&2(3 sucked) it's a huge RTS that spans from the dawn of man to way in the future, think you'll dig'em

Ah, forgot it wasn't out on th PS3 yet?? shame, it is out on GFW if you're interested.

That's because BioShock was a 360 "exclusive," until 2K changed their mind or something.. So we get it on PS3 over a year late.. Well, that's fine by me, as I have heard only good things about it, and it always interested me (even to the point where I was considering picking up a 360 and returning it after beating the game, heh). I will get it on PS3, as I don't do Windows.

I used to hate FPS games on consoles too (other than the Wii, due the perfect controller for FPS games that the Wii has), until I got my PS3 and played Call of Duty 4. I'm not sure how or why, but the controls in that game were perfect and I've been able to play many FPS games on my PS3 now. Last generation I had troubles playing Halo, Call of Duty, even Ghost Recon on my Xbox and GameCube. Maybe the controllers make the difference, or maybe the controls this-gen just are better. I dunno.

I also read on a 1up article that they are going to do some exclusive content for the PS3 version. I'm also out of the Windows circle, I'm a Mac guy and no, I won't dual boot with Windows, but I don't want to open that can of worms.

Why don't you just Dual Boot??

Joking.

I find that interesting that you can use the PS3 controller for FPS's for I can not stand it for anything, let alone FPS's. In fact I have resigned myself to only use my PS3 as a blu-ray player because on those damn controllers!!! Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I think the same thing when I try using a 360 controller...but then I've been playing PS2 using that controller for years, so I'm used to the form factor.

Yea, I never played my PS2 either except to play Champions of Norath. Played the PS1 Dual Shock but fell off of gaming after the dreamcast was dismissed(Talk about a awful controller) Then someone gave me a Xbox and I have been hooked on the Xbox Brand ever since.
