Just a couple of quick questions. Now that the PS3 has jumped on the achievement bandwagon with the new trophies system, do we start calling gamers who strive for a larger trophy collection/e-penis trophy-whores? Also do you even care about trophies/achievements?
Personally, I've never understood the lure of the achievement system, though I did enjoy the sound my xbox gave me when I unlocked an achievement. Is saying I devote more time to gaming than you do really that gratifying to people? I think I'd be more into it if microsoft and sony gave perks to people with higher gamer score/level. Like maybe for every 1k gamer points you earn would give you 50 MS points or only players with high gamer scores receive invites for online betas for certain games. If the achievement/trophy system had some sort of reward function like that, I think I'd be in, but until then I could care less.

I don't mind em' at all. It is fun when you compete with your pals online to see who can earn the trophies and/or who has the higher level.

As long as I have more trophies than NJShadow, I couldn't care less.

Hey dude! I was beatin' ya until you got the 15 tokens and 5 shields trophies! Do I hear comeback!? :D
And really, that Surviving 7 min. without shooting in Endless should have been a Silver or Gold trophy! :D

WTH, it's Sony, they'll probably let you just buy all the trophies.

There are actually a few 360 games the allow unlocks via earning achievements, like Dead Rising.

They should've had some system that either lets you have trophies from the games you've already played, and/or added trophies to the games that are already out!
But whateve, we'll see how it plays out.
I still love me my meaningless achievement points.
It's just how I roll

I never understood the trophy thing since you can't do anything with them but just say "hey look how much free time I have".
Be cool if they had some virtual store you can buy things for your games with it like DLC or stuff for fun like artwork or music from the games or something.
Metroid Prime 3 did that..I like my bobble head Mii in Samus ship ..but more games should do that.

you won't catch me buying friggin' Stardust HD just for trophies.
i wish they would patch COD4 and give me credit for being such a cold-hearted murderer, though.

You should buy it because it's a kickass game, haha.
I'm an achievement/trophie addict. I won't go out of my way to get the tougher ones, but give me something that's easily achievable, and I'll aim for it. I don't want to be an addict, but every time I see my friends have a higher score than me, I can't help but think that I must crush them slowly and painfully. Of course, I don't have enough money or time to catch up to the friends who have had the 360 longer than me. But the PS3... Gives me a fresh start. And really, the achievements/trophies make me play more of a game than I normally would. In Bioshock, I would've never bothered with taking all the pictures if I didn't get achivement points for it.
It would've been cool to have a reward of some sort. Reach a certain level and get free swag or something. Kind of like GTA's 100% and how you could've gotten a free key to the city of you reached 100% by a certain date.
With the PS3, I can see them giving us stuff in Home like clothes or furniture based off game characters, which hopefully they do.

Why don't you buy Stardust because it's a freaknig awesome game for $10???
EDIT: dang, az0madman beat me to it!
Don't count on COD4 getting trophies - they won't even give us rumble support. Screw them.

I do like that it adds some extra challenges into a game that I wouldn't have tried doing otherwise, like hoarding 20 bombs in SSHD. Though I really think they need to add some sort of reward other than a 'level' system, since having a high level/gamerscore doesn't necessarily mean someone is a great gamer, it could just mean that they can afford the money/time to play every game that comes out, or that they maybe use gamefly to rack up some easy points.
I really like az0madman's idea of getting something themed around a certain game in Home for achieving a certain amount of trophies in that game, like if I get the platinum trophy in SSHD, I can get an asteroids arcade cabinet for my house, that'd be sweet. It had better be more than just a 3D trophy room, because I will not be going to anyone's Home to look at their trophies, that's lame.

I just remember the "trophy system" in uncharted. It basically rewarded players with different perks(guns, extra & different player models, behind the scenes making of videos, etc) depending on which trophy you earned in the game. I was totally into that and remember getting all the trophies to unlock everything. If more games implemented this type of system, I'd be all for it.
BTW, they need to make uncharted 2 and get it to my door step nowish, its hands down my favorite game in this generation of consoles.

I like achievements.
They make me feel better about myself (not really... maybe a little). They can often concince me to play through games again and again to achieve certain goals though (a good thing in my opinion).
They're pretty meaningless to me. I mean, when I see that I've unlocked one I think it's cool but I'm not going to go out of my way to unlock them.

retroactively gaining achievements makes it easier to cheat to get them, as you can download a save game. Games will need to be patched to add support for trophies and their own trophies, this is the responsibility of the game makers, not Sony.
