View Full Version : Can somebody demystify 120hz and response time for LCD tv's?

Are refresh rates and response times in anyway related? Is having a 60Hz refresh rate and a 8ms response time the same as a 120Hz refresh rate and a 4ms response time? I know ghosting is a result of slow response times and the 120hz refresh is supposed to help with motion, so would the increasing the refresh rate really matter if pixel response time is decreased?

No refresh rate and response time are not related. Refresh rate is how often the entire screen is redrawn. for LCD's this is pointless as they do not redraw the screen they just flip the bits for the corresponding pixel. So refresh rates in LCD's are 90% marketing, there is some back end stuff going on between the screen and the video card involving refresh rates but it doesn't really effect performance.
Response time time is how long from when you flip the bit to tell the pixel to change and when it actually changes. the longer the response time the slower the LCD screen will react to quickly changing backgrounds.
DLP projectors do have to deal with both due to the fact that they draw the red green then blue on the screen and the tiny mirrors have to move to change the value of on or off. However you can get 120Hz and very low response times with DLP very easily, but you pay a premium for that.
If I have said any wrong information please correct me, I am hardly a expert in the subject.
