In today's "Episode 139 - Vista: Where's the Up Key?" Veronica showed the Alt+"up" short-cut to quickly move to parent directory.

In XP there is even easier short-cut. Just press the "Backspace". I have not tried it in Vista.

Good Luck,

Using backspace goes back in time order. So if you went folder 1 to folder 2, then used the up button to get to folder 1, backspace would take you to folder 2. The up function takes you back through the folder tree. So after folder 1> folder 2> folder 1 like above, the up function would take you to desktop.

I really hope that was coherent. It just looks confusing as hell after typing it.

In witch version of Windows you have tried this?
Because in Windows XP sp3 the backspace move up in the tree. I just tried it again to be sure.

Dang. It does move up in the tree, you're right. Did that really just change in SP3?

I knew it worked from the "time order" as said above.

Not really, As far I can remember in Windows XP, "backspace" aways was "up" command. The funny think is that windows explorer is based on IE, but in IE the "backspace" is indeed "Back" command.

About SP3, I believe there are only changes in DRM, Genuine Verification, and System Activation subsystems. For sure the IE7 do not require to pass Genuine Validation any more. Loosing the browser market in China is big deal for MS. The only useful change I have found in SP3 is the detection for lost packet over the network. (so called detection of 'black holes'). And the last is inclusion of all patches released by MS. Not only the security, but some hot fixes like famous random hang after connecting or disconnecting some USB devices.

I don't see a need for an UP button in Vista when you can just click on the folder in the path bar. However the keyboard shortcut is a useful feature in navigating folders.
