Power supplie either too small or diying? I think a new larger one is requiered. You coudl also try disconnecting stuff you could do with out.

This computer wouldn't happen to have been made by eMachiens would it?

Does sound like the PSU.

If it's not that then it could be some other component that's failing and tripping the PSU (which might even be the motherboad itself).

Since you haven't replied, I just want to make this clear.

if it is a eMachiens computer you are using, STOP USING IT, go buy a new PSU now.

eMachiens PSUs are very, very poor quality and die in about 14 month of out of the box use taking the motherboard, drives and probably the CPU and RAM with it as well.

Emachines does tend to put iffy equipment in their systems. When Emachines started making the Gateway computers, we quit buying Gateway. Gateway was hands down the best equipment on the market and their support was awesome. Once my employer had a bad monitor (crt) on one of the staff machines. So to make up for it not only did Gateway send us an a brand new lcd screen, but they also sent us a replacement keyboard and mouse. But then I did do a bit of sweet talking to the female support people. As for resolving the issue, I would go look at the power saving features settings in the bios first before reinventing the wheel on the hardware.

its not a e machine but its not much better at all its a Compaq presario .it was on for 5hrs just now and the last hr it turned off 3 times.why do i have to un plug the power from both ends? it blows my mind . it truly will not power up any other way .is there residual power left in the line?

As long as the other PSU's have the same wattage rating or higher and have the correct connectors you can use them no problem.
