They make decent Laptops.
But there is defiantly better stuff out there.

They are the third largest computer company, by sales, in the world. Bought Gateway last year.

I agree with Ryudo on his assessment.

I'm on an acer laptop now, I love it.

At one time they had a really good rep. I think they have concentrated on doing laptops. I have not seen an acer desktop per se in the us for a long time. I guess now that gateway is no longer owned by emachines, but acer instead their quality should be a better.

Check Newegg, they have Acer desktops. So does Best Buy and Office Depot.

The one knock I have read about concerning Acer is that it seems that they customize some components and their drivers, making them somewhat proprietary and making it difficult for a user to just download a generic driver or update from the part maker.

As far as laptops, from my experience everyone does that. I know my dell's video drivers are months behind the current version because you can't update with nVidia drivers, you have to use Dell's version.

I had an Acer notebook a while back...

One thing to keep in mind - they aren't as well built as your average Dell or HP notebook. My Acer notebook seemed flimzy almost...

I have not had to get a brand new machine for myself in 4 years. Computer equipment like cars go down in resale value dramatically as soon as they come off the show room floor, so I prefer to stay just behind the curve and piece together my own equipment from what I can collect. I definitely avoid proprietary equipment, now unless I get it dirt cheap or free. Intel is fixing to allegedly drop the price on some of it's cpus around 30 percent. I expect to see some good computer sales soon. The last computer I bought (a used machine for business) was from www.directron.com at their local store on the other side town from me, I get ten times better price, support, and attitude than the major retailers could ever give me on puter stuff.

If you're getting a desktop I'd suggest building one yourself. usually cheaper [though not always, OEM's are slowly closing the gap] and way more options for how it'll look.

I am on a acer laptop its fine. I haven't had to download drivers from acer, you can go to the companies who made the part's website and download latest.

You always get what you pay for, but to be fair, Acer does make some pretty decent [and higher priced] laptops. They are in the top 5 PC sellers for a reason ya know. I'm a Dell guy myself though.

In my experience with them, I've seen nothing but problems. I've never bought one before, but most of the time when I get asked to fix someones computer, it's an Acer.

I had an Acer laptop many years ago (95? 96?) for its time it was awesome, and travelled around in the back of a stationwagon with me on my assignment.

I've never had problems with their monitors or the few laptops I've worked on. They might not be top of the line but they will get the job done for a fair price.
