Sorry if this is a dupe thread, but I couldn't find it in either the standard or advanced searches so no complaining...
After discovering Firefly and Serenity last year, and then Dr. Horrible and Runaways this year, I decided it was completely unfair of me to claim to be a Joss fan if I'd never seen Buffy. So I got my hands on the first season, and I'm about halfway through it.
Holy crap this show is amazing! I was expecting some cheesy 90's special effects, but they actually forced me to pay more attention to the story, and I'm totally hooked. The writing keeps surprising me. The characters have so much more depth than any other show from that period.
Color me impressed.
PS: NO SPOILERS

That's so good to hear.
And season 1 was the lamest of the seasons. I mean it was good, but no budget, and all kinds of introductions to people and rules... Season 2 gets better, Season 3 is probably my favorite..
I won't tell you about anything else. But keep us posted. I'd love a fresh new discussion on Buffy. A lot of eps are also available on HULU.com.

I'm pretty sure there are other threads on the Buffiverse. I think there is one called Buffy/Angel. By the way watch all seven seasons then read the comics. Also, I'm a fan of angel and recommend it as well when the shows go their own ways.

Hated Buffy and Angel.
Though the movie of Buffy couple years before the series is worse.

But Firefly and Serenity I just love and Dr Horribles is quite fun.

I liked the movie...couldn't get into the show. Agreed on the last sentence.

Best Show Ever.
The only bad thing about Buffy is that I can't decide whether Buffy or Firefly is my favorite TV series.

I'm going to have to disagree. IMO season 4 was the worst, but 5 was probably the best and 3 was great too so they more than make up for it.

I'm actually in the middle of the 5th season now... the 4th season was absolute ass but other than that it's a pretty good show. I don't see how people can consider it the GREATEST SHOW EVER, but it's damn entertaining. Unfortunately I've had a lot of stuff spoiled... it's hard to avoid spoilers on something so old

Buffy was ok. I just finished all 7 seasons not to long ago. I hated how they ended that show. It actually put a bad taste in my mouth about the whole show in general. I started watching Angel but I've only got the one season and I'm just not getting into it like Buffy. Something needs to happen to keep me watching besides Cordi in tight pants.

I remembered season 4 as being pretty good. I can't specifically remember any episode from that season except Hush. I'd been rewatching it, but I stopped during season 2. I need to pick that back up again.
I almost stopped watching Buffy because of how much I didn't like season 1, then I gave it another chance, started season 2 and loved it until the end (and beyond into the Season 8 comics)
I actually am in the minority in the I prefer Angel to Buffy, but that's probably mainly because the actual characters of Buffy and Willow were generally my least favourite on the show.

I recently finished watching Buffy and Angel. In my opinion Firefly is superior to both, but they all have that Joss charm.
Anyone know of a resource for the non-TV buffyverse content? Which comics/books should I read, and in what order, if I want to continue?
The only stuff that's officially in "canon" is Buffy Season 8 and Angel: After the Fall (which is angel season 5, or 6 or whatever).
There was a story about slayers in the future called Fray and Fray seems to be showing up in the latest Buffy arc so maybe that's being brought into canon also.
There's no real order, there's just those two (or 3 if you want Fray also) series to read.

Well, that's fairly simple. Thanks.

I am with you on that, although I think if Firefly had been given a chance it would have surpassed Buffy in my heart because I think it had a better aesthetic and depth of character. Both are still awesome to me...oops I meant rad.

My fave is Firefly.
Only because of this:
My wife hates Buffy, but loves Firefly.
So I have to say Firefly... we can watch it together... and I like - you know - doing stuff with her.
Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

I just got done making my way through Buffy for the first time, and I definitely see why people love it so much.
The characters are loveable, the show is consistantly good (with a few minor exceptions), and there's definitely some just amazing episodes that show up every once in awhile.
My first exposure to Whedon was when I fell in love with Firefly. I can see the similarities between the two, though I will admit I enjoyed Firefly better.
I think it's because the sci-fi in Firefly makes me love it more, where as I had to initially get over the 90s high school setting to start to love Buffy.

Ahh you guys are lucky to see it for the first time. I started watching when season 2 aired and I was 16 I think, same age as the characters. Even had a Buffy poster back in the day.
Best TV show ever.
Season 4 was a good one. Bit weird with the initiative... but it had some really good episodes. Hush, Fear itself, Something Blue, Where the wild things are.. I can watch 4, 5 drags a bit before the finale.
I haven't watched seasons 1-3 in like 5 years because they are the wrong region for my DVD player, but I'm going to do that in the next few months. Should be interesting.

Go a bit longer than season 1... it's not all that great.
I actually JUST finished season 5, trust me it gets a lot better!
