View Full Version : Is Tekzilla working for you?

One of the parting gift's that Jim Loudernback did for the folks at PC Magazine was start a thread asking if the magazine was "working" for the viewers. The key is more than just answering yes or no, but what parts work, what needs work, etc.

I've been watching a while, probably five or six shows pre-Veronica. In general, its not working for me.

The viewer questions are not challenging enough to make me care about either the question or the answer. The begging for "video questions" every episode is tiresome. I don't get why you want them, fuzzy pictures of j-random viewers have zero interest to me, and Patrick and Veronica can read faster than the viewer's video can ask the question. All it does is show some bad video and slow the show down.

Perhaps I'm too much of a geek to match the target audience. But the last couple of shows have been boring, and others have posted to the show thread as well.

So, does it work for you?

I love the show.
Fave show on Rev3.
Would I want some improvements, yes yes I would.
Different set please and something not as boring as a brick wall and more open(not asking for a huge set like some topics have) just something more free and open and is more interesting for the background.

Early episodes you had people like neha go out on assignment and would love to see more of that.(obviously neha can't do it now no longer with rev3 but someone maybe a new personality that makes occasional appearances for certain segments)

So, does it work for you?

For the most part, yes. Sometimes I wish the technical depth was higher, or that they went in to Linux, etc, more. But at the same time, I understand they want to do a show that appeals to a more general audience with lots of viewers, not a niche program for 27 hard core geeks with years and years of experience.

As for your comments in starting this thread, here's the problem. Before they went to a Q and A show and before they started asking for video questions, every other comment was "You should answer more questions on air!" and "When are you going to let us send in video questions?!!"

Love the show, been a Patrick Norton fan for a long time.

But I must agree that the show could be so much more. It seems to be dumb down a lot. Maybe it's just the viewer questions that are sent in are basic or they are choosing the basic ones for a wider audience.

And yes the begging for video question's is getting old.

I enjoy watching the show every week and veronica and patrick work very well with each other.

In some ways I do miss InDigital where they used to do more reviews of tech and gadgets and compare them against each other, but I understand this can be expensive if review units aren't available.

Viewer questions could be a bit more in depth as most can be answered with a simple google search. I'd send you a question but I can't really think of anything to ask right now ...

The only thing I might revisit is the 15 second rule. It's hard to ask a meaningful question in that amount of time. Maybe 30?

I like the chemistry between Patrick and Veronica. The content is hit and miss for me. However, if you look at many of Rev3's shows, they are basically stand alone segments of the ScreenSavers. If you look at it in that light, it is OK that not every Tekzilla offering is to your liking.

I agree that viewer video questions can be painful to sit through. There seems to be two types of viewers. There are the novice viewers who, because of their limited knowledge, ask the same friggin questions over and over. Then there are the enthusiasts who have questions that would take too long to answer or don't fit the Tekzilla format of basic help. I think the problem could be solved if Systm were a bit more hardcore. Maybe the answer is that Rev3 needs a tutorial program, going more indepth with steps for varied tasks and applications.

On the ScreenSavers, I would become irritated when all the crew would do is install Linux onto a computer. What about the configuration? What about a review of making your way around the desktop, launching programs, setting up email, etc? I realize Linux isn't a strong point for the crew, but this is an example of the intermediate content they could provide.

Do I wish there were more "difficult" questions? Sure, but they can only work with what they have, if all Patrick and Veronica are getting are these slow lobs across the plate that's what they have to answer.

If you want more interesting stuff you could always pretened you have a problem and ask a made up question for them to solve, the show is really about the viewers asking for what they want and providing the hosts with material to work with, garbage in, garbage out.

(not that I think the show is generally garbage at all, but so the saying goes)

i like the "easy" questions. most of the time i know how to answer the question but the hosts with give me a different answer.

The show is working for me. I don't turn to it for in depth news, I view it more as a fun light hearted tech-centric diversion from my workday. I tend to watch the longer weekly shows on Monday evening via iPhone while lying in bed waiting for the wife to do her pre-sleep stuff. In short... it does work for me.

Maybe the answer is that Rev3 needs a tutorial program, going more indepth with steps for varied tasks and applications.

So you're saying there needs to be a "Call For Help" show... :)

Here's my idea. Make Systm more hardcore like it used to be. Then, take the segments that have recently been going into Systm and put them in Tekzilla. I think it would be good for Tekzilla to have a "hardware/DIY" segment to break up the monotony of viewer questions (which is great, 3Com Netcam Network anyone?). Then, at the end of that hardware segment, they could plug System; "If you liked this, make sure you check out Systm where we take hardware to the next level." Something like that.

EDIT: Oh, and for the set... Yes, it does need changed. But that aside, I think different segments of the show should be done in different locations. Give the viewer's eyes a change. Even use parts of other sets or other parts of the building. IF you have a segment on video editing, record the segment where all of the real video editing is done. Things like that.

My only problem with Call for Help is that it was pretty basic stuff, too. Wouldn't hurt if they did have a C4H type show, though. On second thought, I think Tekzilla should be the beginner to intermediate content and Systm should take on the more advanced demonstrations.

Still also would like to see them do some on assignment vids like they did those museums in early eps as well but not just museums but planetariums/event shows or anyplace that would relate to the show somehow.

For the most part, I love the show. You don't have to change a thing to keep me watching.

However, I would like to see some more hardware reviews. I know that it would be a pain in the arse to do that, since Rev3 really doesn't have the resources or setup to test everything (like TechTV or ZD did). Perhaps a partnership with a good review website that doesn't have a netcast.

Another nice thing would be to have more interviews and the like, or at least more tech news. Back in the TSS days, I became a pretty well-rounded geek just from watching the show. I realize that Rev3 doesn't have the support that makes that kind of depth possible, but you asked what I wanted. To that end, I would tone it down on any DIY stuff (move that to Systm) and just focus on tech help and news.

All in all, the curse of Tekzilla is that I want it to be like TSS, but since Rev3 has dedicated shows to other aspects (TRS for game and movie reviews, Systm for DIY stuff, etc.) Tekzilla can't really be the one stop shop. I don't know that I have a point to make here, but I just wanted to talk for a while.

I agree completely. Since the show became a tech-question show, it hasn't been working for me. I watched it from the beginning, but the episodes from the past 3 weeks have just piled up. I just haven't had the incentive to sit through another painful hour of tech support. The idea with having people film themselves only results in atrocious quality video with next to no entertainment value. If I wanted to watch that kind of stuff, I'd go to Youtube.

IMO the show was much better when it was more like Systm Light. Most of the topics were a bit simple for me, but I still liked the show because it was entertaining. That is not the case with the current state of the show, and if it continues with the video questions, I'm just gonna give it up all together. InDigital successor this is not.

Sorry, we just don't need two Systms, you know? We like having the viewer questions because there isn't another show out there like us -- everything else is just rehashed news shows, at least in my opinion. Video questions get the audience involved, and people enjoy being a part of the show.

If it's not the format for you, that's fine. It's not for everyone. And we'll probably do some segments in the future that are a bit different (I've had a few things rolling around in my head lately) but the show at it's core will remain viewer question based.

Like we said last week, the questions (and their responses) are only as good as you make them. Maybe this show isn't for the most elite people out there--maybe the questions seem easy to most of you. However, most of the people on the forums here ARE the more knowledgeable in the tech area than the average viewer.

When something changes, you're bound to alienate someone. Overwhelmingly, the reaction to the show and the format has been very positive (otherwise, we wouldn't keep doing it that way). I don't like the idea of longtime viewers leaving or giving up, but you really can't please everyone.

I used to like watching The Screensavers a lot and one of the main differences I've noticed between Tekzilla and TSS is in the hosts' responses to user questions. I've never worked for a television network before, so I could be completely off base here, but... It seems as though when Leo and Patrick hosted The Screensavers, they not only drew from their personal knowledge of a subject, but they had a staff of writers and researchers finding information to feed the show. Whenever I try to put my finger on what makes Rev3 shows (marginally) less enjoyable than TechTV, it always comes down to that same realization.

It just feels like something's missing. Short of hiring a whole team to research and script segments, would it be possible to maybe answer live questions from phone calls or maybe Ustream? I understand that your shooting schedule might be erratic, but everyone seems to find Gary Vaynerchuk whenever he shoots Wine Library TV. And although you're not necessarily looking to emulate old TechTV shows, answering live tech questions on Tekzilla in rapid fire succession, much like Chris Pirillo on Call For Help, would make a it a more lively and interesting show from my perspective.

I don't mean to be an ass, but I do want to point something out when everyone says Tekzilla should be more like Call for Help.

Call For Help is no longer on the air. And its replacement, Lab With Leo, was never picked up in the US, was canceled in Australia last summer, has ceased production of new shows, and will exist entirely in reruns, if at all, after the two remaining new shows are finally broadcast in Canada.

That should tell everyone something about the popularity of Call For Help style shows.

When I first responded to this thread I forgot how much the show has changed, then go back and we saw segments with Jim on gaming and guests like Morgan webb on video podcasting and interviews with smalltime inventors some on assignment stuff with neha plus a bunch of product reviews.

Now while both hosts are much better together, would be nice to see much of that return and this show would be freaking amazing.

All this confirms is that niche programming doesn't work on traditional media outlets. Call for Help/Lab with Leo is the only show that was strong enough to get a second chance on cable. As I've posted before, I thought C4H was often too basic.

I think Tekzilla is a good show. My previous posts target more of the network approach to providing the balanced content.

you can't change a shows complete DNA unless your willing to take the consequnces of that action sorta like if you walked into a Mcdonalds and they where set up like sub way there goes a whole crowd that loved Big macs and now they go off and disapper i'm not saying that Tekzilla needs to change anything this is more to the people that are trying to inspire a big change with them

i think personally that Tekzilla is a great and awsome show and i would say don't change anything unless they choose too.

I do like it in general, and try my best to watch it.

I do like the tech & tips however I have one thing I wanted to kinda mumble about that is kinda annoying.

i don't watch all the tips the day they come out, I tend to mainline 4 or 5 of them in a row before watching the full length.

I know it's important to advertise the other channels, but when the advert for the channel is almost longer than the short tip it gets a bit old the 5th time in a row. I'd only ask that you make the advert for the show a similar ratio to the show length itself.

Especially annoying if you don't find the advert funny and extremely annoying.

yes I know you can fast forward, but sometimes it's more effort to fast forward the thing than to just let it play out.

"Basically", "actually", "weeping softly in the corner", "I like that thought" and the brick wall do not bother me in the least. I'm more interested in the actual content of the show than puff like that. And I'd rather see them spend bucks on equipment or software to show off than on a fancy set.

I was basically disappointed that there was no live showing of the taping yesterday. I spent the afternoon weeping softly in the corner in front of a brick wall because I was so sad. Absasmurfly!

I'm a relative newcomer to the show. (I download the high quality XVID and pop it into my DIVX DVD player via a thumb drive or else transfer to my Sansa Fuze for road trips.) The show works for me and has been a treat to find.

I agree that a roomier set would be nice. Something that doesn't feel like the hosts are giving their last words before the firing squad.

I also love to see product reviews and tech solutions to problems I never thought of. That water-proof sealant they showcased a few weeks ago was very cool, for instance. I could do with less MOBO reconstructs and more weird and practical solutions.

An ubergeeky tech show, as some suggested, would bore me to tears. That kinda show just appeals to the guy living in the closet in Real Genius.

I just watched the current dl.tv. I had not watched it in a while, I followed Patrick over here when he switched. Plus, I'm not a big fan of Robert Heron. He knows his stuff, but is not as nice to look at as Veronica.

The current dl.tv had Robert and Loyd Case. Loyd is even farther from V, but he is a geek's geek.

I think it was a much better show than the typical Tekzilla. The viewer questions were far more technical. The answers were thoughful to the hard questions.

I'd think Tekzilla is working a lot better for me if it was more like that dl.tv with the Tekzilla hosts.

I think Veronica addressed this, but dl.tv has better *according to you* viewer questions because of the viewers that sent them. It's not Tekzilla's, V's, or Pat's fault. It just so happens that many of the viewer questions Tekzilla puts on the show happen to be "easy." I don't really see that, but if you want harder questions just send in some. I'm pretty sure you or someone else that thinks they're easy can just make some up. I don't think they'll know you don't really need help with RAM voltages or overclocking temps.

...

I'd think Tekzilla is working a lot better for me if it was more like that dl.tv with the Tekzilla hosts.

I watch DL.TV every week. There is one problem in your opinion here. You said yourself that this is the first DL.TV you've watched in a while. Here's the problem. This wasn't a typical episode as far as viewer questions go.

When Loyd Case is on, they start pumping that he is going to be on at least three weeks in advance. They make it clear, then, that they are looking for really tough questions specifically for Loyd to answer.

In a more typical episode, the viewer questions to DL.TV are about the same level, more or less, as a Tekzilla question.

This particular week's episode of DL.TV was different for another reason too. It may be my imagination, but I'd swear Loyd actually *smiled* three whole times!

myketuna
08-02-2008, 06:48 PM
Yeah he did. I think he smiled more times in the previous episode he was in, but yeah now we're kinda getting off topic. But you do have a point in that whenever Loyd is on, dl.tv does put up the more technical questions. But I'm sure if someone posed one of these to the Tekzilla crew, they would answer it pretty well too.

This definitely isn't a replacement of InDigital, and I wish InDigital was still around. That said, I think they should not be close to any other shows they offer because at some point I got to feeling like their programming was too redundant.

Only recently have I actually gotten comfortable with Tekzilla. I didn't watch through it before Veronica because I thought Patrick's chemistry with Jessica was weird the few times I did decide to check it out. When Veronica joined, I thought the same thing as when there was a slight stink about this Veronica girl being on Mahalo Daily. "What the hell is Mahalo Daily and who the hell is Veronica?" Now she's on Tekzilla. Okay.

After I decided to watch a few episodes on some boring days with nothing to do to pass the time, I still thought the show was boring and too redundant. There's a gap where InDigital used to be--as I said! --But, just recently, it suddenly dawned on me that Veronica's personality goes with mine, and once I saw her as a bear, I decided she is good. Recently, it finally dawned on me that this is like Call for Help.

Things I think should be improved:

1) Patrick goes into babble mode when explaining stuff. Make it harder to understand what you're explaining if we actually want to know, why not? (I channeled my inner Zoidberg.) The last few times I've watched Systm, it's just silly. "Blah, blah, blah, self-dialogue, and this is unfinished, not shown, screw that, was going to do that, not going to do that, pooh pooh, pee pee."

2) The set does feel claustrophobic and barren, and if I think about it, something better than bricks could make the show feel more right.

3) What is the philosophy behind the camera switching? Pick an angle for a segment and stick with it! "Okay, begin speaking and then a second after you start, switch to another angle on you for no reason! Then for a half second you are looking at the other camera and have to uselessly turn to face the new live camera! For NO reason! I'm bored... Let's see if I can make it do this..." Did you get more cameras than you needed and feel guilty about not having anything to do with them? I watch plenty of talk shows and they don't frakkin' jump around uselessly. It is not making things feel more lively. Maybe aggravating. And whenever a useless shot is taken on whimsy on say Conan when the director sometimes switches to an aerial shot of the audience while Conan does the monologue for no particular reason, it is awkward. Extrapolate a lesson from that. Only lately has it not been in my face when it happens, but I may have just adjusted.

That's all I can think of right now. I asked a question about converting some video type some time ago but it never got answered. Pooh on you!

PS

Veronica: Add me on PS3 or 360 if you have space availables! I can use more peoples to play with...s.

Too much of a geek nay I say. Is that even possible? Ok sure it is but there is nothing wrong being hard-core geek. I personally like the show pre-veronica (has nothing to do with you veronica) it was just less question driven.

I like the questions fine but I don't see the need for so many. I agree with you that many of the questions asked could be asked (and answered quicker) in the forums. After all that IS what the forum is for. They are average everyday questions that can be found just by doing research on the net. I try to come up with a question when all other resources are exhausted. Sometimes I think my questions are TOO technical for them to answer on the show.

I want the show to be tek show not a tek talk show. I could careless about seeing the users face. Matter of fact isn't that WHY we give ourselves a level of anonymity with user ID's in forums?

Perhaps it is the "average" user that it their target audience and why those elements don't work for us. I get my dose of hard-core on arstechnica forums.

What works for me are the segments on free applications and website they can't get enough of. I also enjoy it more when there are guest host with a specific topic.

I vote for a contest to design the new background set. Perhaps they can give a budget for viewers to stay within while designing.

Oh and Tekzilla was the LAST show to report (albeit very little) on the E3. It really is hard to compete with IGN, Gamespot, G4's on location coverage everyday and an RSS feed straight from E3. Why even bother.

At least as far as I'm concerned, I enjoy games but don't love them or follow them passionately so I didn't check IGN, GS or G4.

So all the stuff talked about on Tekzilla was new to me and fairly interesting

then send something in. it is not like they are making them up. are you accusing them of skipping over hard questions sent in?

No, I'm saying that the current show is soft and the questions are soft and I'd like them to crank it up a couple of clicks towards what Loyd did on DL.TV.

I have sent stuff in, suggestions, questions, etc. Everything but a silly video question. And I know you'd rather see V do a question than see me ask one.

It's actually in the top 3 (which is hard to make considering there are more than 3 shows I like on Rev3. It would be kind of cool to open up the set, but having a more open set would only apply, if they needed the space for specific reasons or segments. So, I doubt that will happen anytime soon (if at all), unless they expand the show content. They should be a little more forgiving on the video time limit, but I'm sure it is mostly for time considerations on their part, as people could just ramble on and on (have you seen people on youtube? They expound about how much they burned their grill cheese the other day and how it totally screwed up their chi or some crap). That coupled with the awkward 2 minute long pauses... well.

I would like more technical and fully explained concepts to be peppered throughout the episodes, but they are probably not trying to overwhelm people who might not be as savvy as apparently everyone here happens to be, and as such they need to balance accordingly.

I assume that productions like this are not the easiest to create, as they must adjust to the median, while still not alienating the hardcore salivating demi-gods of the internet... you princes of Maine.

All-in-all, I find the show enjoyable and the two hosts seem to work with and feed off each other well.

Yes, we all want TSS reincarnated... but, people want a lot of things... like good paying jobs and girls that actually want to kiss them... that doesn't mean you can get such pie-in-the-sky dreams, fulfilled.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some sloppy joes to reheat.
