I saw a commercial for the re-release of the robin hood dvd the other day. I loved this movie when I was younger and it is definitely my all time favorite disney cartoon.

What Disney cartoon did you guys like the best? I'm talking pre 3d computer stuff.

I'm totally with you. I loved Robin Hood. My favorite, though, was the Sword in the Stone. Don't know why, cuz it doesnt really hold up today.

Also, I know I'll get shit for this, but Sleeping Beauty. Just look at that movie. It is some of the prettiest hand drawn animation I've seen. It was also released in a 2.21:1 ratio, unlike most other disney cartoons.

It's an absolute work of art.

FANTASIA

It's an absolute work of art.Agreed ... and if you ever get a chance to see the Fantasmic light/water show at Disneyland, it adds another dimension.

Robinhood, and many will hate me for this but I really love Junglebook, racism aside it was a part of my childhood, a time where "walk like you, talk like you" didn't seem absurd. (Robinhood is still probably my number 1, I was CRAZY for that as a kid).

I disagree, Sword in the Stone still holds up, and is by far my favorite Disney movie. I'm a big fan of cartoons that deal with humans, and I've always loved Camelot and Merlin mythos, so this one was an easy favorite as a kid and I still watch it from time to time.

I have Robin Hood on DVD already. Is it currently not sold?

Actually, I have ever Disney cartoon released on DVD to date, and even had Little Mermaid a few years ago from its initial release in the 90's....

Beauty and the Beast. #1

Even tho i tend to hate the house that Walt built, there are a few from them i can enjoy. FANTASIA, Aladdin, and the Gargoyles series. but the rest is well made crap to me

You have no idea how hard it is to be an animator that doesn't like Disney.

By it doesnt hold up, I really meant to say it's just too damned short. It seems to end way too quickly. Which can also be considered a good thing, maybe?

Wtf, how come noone has mentioned Lion King?

My top three are Lion King, Alladin and a lot will probably disagree with this one, but Mulan.

I saw Mulan at some Mulan event thing, there was this amazing Chinese show beforehand, and the movie is great too.

My sentimental favorite is "The Little Mermaid," However, I think that "The Loin King" is the best example of this Genre.

I think Tarzan was one of the best as far as animation goes...I am still amazed when I watch it...Lion King was awesome too, but I was impressed with the mixture of hand animation and computer stuff in Tarzan...

I'd have to say Robin Hood is my all time favorite...

1) Sleeping Beauty
2) Alice in Wonderland
3) The Lion King
4) The Little Mermaid
5) Beauty and the Beast
6) Snow White
7) The Lion King
8) Aladdin
9) The Fox and the Hound

Damn, the was a bit of a Freudian slip. I guess spell check doesn't catch them all. "The Loin King" sounds like either a bad porno or a place that sells steaks.

My favorite hasn't been mentioned yet, and its actually a milestone film in animation: The Great Mouse Detective. This was the first feature-length animated film to use computer animation. Robin Hood and Beauty and the Beast round out my top 3.

Following a close second is Motor Mania, with Goofy as Mr. Walker and Mr. Wheeler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcMNhRtWDzU

1. Alice in Wonderland

It is an art film. Very little story in any segments, none to tie them all together. Music in motion.

The musicals are beautiful, but for me the ultimate triumph was The Emperor's New Groove. It was, in every way, a throwback to the classic genius of the old school Loony Toons, Merry Melodies and Silly Symphonies shorts of yesteryear, with jokes that were actually hilarious, without treating kids like they're retarded (have you SEEN saturday morning cartoons recently?)

Tarzan and Aladdin round out the top 3, but I can't believe my #4 hasn't even been mentioned: The Black Cauldron! Blood in a Disney movie!! Unheard of today!!!

And yes, when I was a kid, Fantasia was the dullest sh*t ever.

I'm not 100% sure it was disney but there was this three little pigs war propaganda short that had the wolf as hitler that I thought was amazing when I saw it in a class. Sometimes seeing a movie in a class room skews the boredom scale though, so i dunno.

Yes! another emporers new groove person. I dunnno why no one seems to like that one.

Yo, did you ever see that one propaganda short with Donald and Uncle Scrooge debating what to do with Donald's paycheck?? A Hitler wolf was trying to get Donald to have fun with the money, but the wise Scrooge convinced him to invest in war bonds. Touching.

ya it was definitely made by disney as part of the war bonds campaign. I saw it in a class last year along with a few others. The best one they made was an over view of the life of one of the Hitler youth. It might have been called mein kampf i'm not sure though. It was very dark and not typical disney. I will see if I can find it and post the link.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv25qHwvOLM it's called education for death

I remember watching Kubrik's 2001 and having no idea what just happened when I was about 8. Some stories are simply too much for us when we're younger.

Have a read of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_%28film%29
It should be noted that all the shorts do have clear stories. Except for the mushroom dance. The Sorcerer's apprentice is just the most clear one is all. My favorite is the Night On Bald Mountain. It's the perfect Halloween piece, and probably scared your pants off depending on how young you were when you watched it.
