Thanks to the black magic within the internets I just got done watching the movie. I wasn't sure what to expect as I hadn't really heard anything about it before hand so I was assuming it'd be a fantasy based adventure story. It's got that element to it but it wasn't what I expected.

The movie is about two things. There's a main plot in the movie that has nothing to do with the Fairy Tale and it's intense and very mature. Then there's the dark fairy tale subplot which is pretty traditional. It ends up being a nice blend of the two and the serious stuff is well written and just as interesting as the fantasy stuff.

The acting is amazing and the characters were all very convincing. The film also looks amazing. My only complaint is the the minor use of CGI in some scenes that made things a little unrealistic looking. It's no Gumby Blade fight but it stood out, and I think when CGI does that these days it's not done well.

Even though it's a fantastic movie I can't really say that I would be a big fan of the "Adult Fairy Tale" genre if one should emerge, but if it did I don't imagine they'd get any better than Pans Labyrinth. Although I would have liked this movie more if they had made it more extreme and darker or if they would have made it kid friendly, which it certainly is not. OMG, there is some sick "faces of death" shit in this film... which seems out of place in the world revolving around this sweet girl. She's sheltered in the movie and she doesn't see these horrible things, but as the audience we're watching what's going on around her you understand why this girl wants to flee her reality.

I think this has been my favorite film of the year. I was hooked from the beginning and a little disappointed that I was always a step ahead of the ending before it happened but it's still a must see movie. I hope you like subtitles!

the black magic within the internets

from now on that's how we will refer to that on this forum. it's official! i think i'll check it out through my own personal use of the black magic within the internets.

i, on the other hand, am totally psyched about the 'adult fairy tale' and how you described it in this movie as pretty horrifying at times? this is definitely a must-see for the theaters. but until then, black magic.

Yes, someone who isn't as soulless and black hearted as me will still enjoy the film, but don't wait for the DVD!

So it is no Mirror Mask? When I saw the trailer, I was interested, but afraid of it being another Mirror Mask!

I felt exactly the same way, but then I saw The Devil's Backbone and now I'm sure it will be awesome. I can't wait!

Nope, no Mirror Mask here. It is kinda similar to that movie in a few ways now that I think about it, but it never really crossed my mind until you said that. It's kinda like Mirror Mask meets Alice in Wonderland in some ways, only done well.

There's only a few parts of the film where the main character is in that kinda environment though. The focus of the film shifts back and forth between the girl who is trying to go home after learning that she's actually the soul of a reborn princess who escaped her underworld kingdom to see what the human world was like, where she got stuck and aged and died long ago. All of this is going on around her in some military outpost in Spain durring WWII where her ruthless new Step-father is a Captain. He is waging war on local men living in the woods who oppose him durring the Spanish Civil War. In between all of this you really get to know all of the characters really well. So it keeps things interesting, although I would have liked to have seen them do more with the girl and her fantasy world.

Can't wait to see this movie. The trailer looked great (my opinion). I have been waiting for a movie to take me back to those days of Labyrinth and Neverending Story. I just don't want my expectations to get too high.:D

It's really nothing like Labyrinth or Never Ending Story so don't get your hopes up, but it's still a great film.

i'm a big puss, the dude with the eyes on his hands freaked me out.

I do wish the plot about the underworld would have been longer, but the movie
isn't really about that.

The main focus is really the "sub-plot", about post-civil war spain. this guy has fascinations with fascism :)

I enjoyed the movie, one I'd recommend, and I don't recommend much.
