I've been meaning to read Watchmen for a year or two but haven't gotten around to it. But since the movies so close, I've been wondering if I should hurry, or put it off.

So what do ya'll think? Will not knowing the source make the movie un-enjoyable, or will knowing the true Watchmen ruin the theatrical representation?

March is still ways away (that's the release month right?), so I say read it. I'm like Rokov, half way through and enjoying every page of it.

You could read it backwards now and then when the movie comes out it will all make a lot more sense.

I say do what you feel comfortable with. I decided to pick it up and read it, and basically ran through it very quickly (even reading all the extra story bits that's included in the graphic novel.) and enjoyed the story. If you're the type that likes to be surprised in what goes on in the movies and then enjoy it at your own pace in the books, then do it that way. Or if you can handle the book then movie (I would kind of liken it to Harry Potter) then do it that way.

When I read it. I thought: "Man this is good but not THAT good. It's highly overrated." I tossed it to a stack of books across the room. 20 minutes later I was thinking about it and re-reading it. Every page made me think: "Oh man THIS IS GOOD."

Some of the artwork is some of the best layout design I've ever seen. Very dynamic.

To echo the others, "read it."

Secondly:

I do hope you are all caught-up with the Harry Potter books for the movie in November...

Discussion point?

Do you guys usually read up on a book or comic before seeing the movie, or do you do the opposite, and go back afterwards? I'm quite certain I'll be forced to watch Twilight when that comes out, so I'm tempted to read the book beforehand. Dunno...

I'm an anti-fan of the Harry Potter books. I would just not like them, except everyone else likes them so much. Movies are ok, cause they don't take so long, and I don't have to read the horrible writing.

Anyway, I read like 1.75 books before I decided they were horrible. So... I'm not caught up for the movies.

Watch the movie first because if it's not as good as the comic book you will still have the chance to enjoy it, instead of comparing it directly to the comic.

thnx, i just wanted to be 100% sure if im gonna commit. The last comic i read was gi joe when i was a kid. i never read any graphic novels or anything, this will be my first in my adult life.

You know, wouldnt it be funny if all this time that i havent been reading many books other then harry potter and hitch hikers and stuff it turns out that i just needed to read this stuff.

Here's hoping i get hooked ;)

Watchmen is very much a book that I am able to recognize as being an excellent book, wonderfully written and drawn, however, it just wasn't necessarily my cup of tea. I was never hooked, having to stay up all night reading to find out what happens next, like I have been for a few other graphic novels, Preacher for example. It was a good book, it was enjoyable, at times it was a struggle to work my way through, certain aspects of how it's written took me out of the story a little bit, like the between chapters prose. I do own it, it will be a while before I read it again, but it was worth the money and I am glad I have read it. I would recommend reading it before seeing the movie, if for no other reason than being able to catch any little inside jokes or references a la Alex recommending The Killing Joke before seeing the Dark Knight.
