Hello,
I know you get a lot of questions from beginning comic book readers, but I really appreciate it. I've read a couple books recommended by this show, Watchmen & Blankets, and now I think I'm ready to start a series. But as dumb as it sounds I literally don't know how.
I thought I'd go back and read something like Civil War, where I can get caught up with the Universe and get to witness a lot of characters. Is the best way to go back and read Civil War be to find the original books (there were 7 right?) or try finding the newer Civil War Chronicles. Is there a website you guys recommend for buying comics? Or is it hard to go back and buy a comic like Civil War for a decent price (there's not just one big book I can purchase like there was for say Watchmen is there?)? Is there a different series you could would recommend?
Thanks for the help. I'm excited to explore some more comics!

there were 7 issues in the main series of civil war, then there is the death of captain America then the return of captain America. you could always buy the comics from Amazon they have used and new things on there and sometimes for low low prices!

Don't see how Civil War is a good introduction into the universe....

Just created this thread for anything related to comics. I'll be checking it pretty often and would like to keep a lot of the comic book related stuff there. Keep it simple and probably updated fairly often. Here's the link: http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21092 and I'll reread your post again later and respond too. Also, I still have yet to read Civil War, but I'm pretty sure I know most of the key points that took place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it'd be easier to pick up the "revised" character origins in the Ultimate Universe than most other things. I've been considering a dive into Civil War, but given how many books weave in and out, not to mention the story arcs that preceed and proceed it make things complicated, and thus I've stayed away for the moment.

I don't think you really need to read all the tie-in of Civil War, I enjoy the Civil War TPB very much. Though I agree the Ultimates series are great choice for Marvel beginners (also the Ultimate X-Men, love it).

I think part of the problem is that I know there is an Arc between The Illuminati, Civil War, World War Hulk and Secret Invasion... And without everything being easily accessable in one place, it comes as a put-off to some extent.
My guess is that I'll get around to it eventually. I'm finally starting to buy comics again (this is the first time since I was 8/9 years old), and I'm really enjoying myself. I plan on picking up some of the big Ultimate Iron Man and Ultimate Spider-Man stuff, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I read Civil War without knowing anything about what was going on in the Marvelverse at the time (didn't even know who some of the heroes were) and I didn't have any trouble following it.

Would there be another Marvel or Ultimates starting point that you'd recommend? Something that's fairly easy to track down and buy.
There isn't one TPB for the main Civil War story arch but 7, correct? Again, totally new to comics--so I'm not entirely sure how TPB work, or what they really are.

your idea of civil war is a good idea. i would suggest reading the chronicles. it is the entire event in order and finding the back copies shouldn't be any big deal.
i would stay away from the ultimate line if you are really wanting to get into the marvel universe. in some cases the orgin and characters are the same and at other times it is completely different. that could be confusing when you try to read the normal stuff.
really the great thing about comics is you really don't need all that much backstory to enjoy them. just pick up some stuff that looks good to you at your local comic shop and read away.
oh and if you do have a question wikipedia will have the answer.
enjoy.

The center story of Civil War in one book, just go get this one and find out if you like this Marvel event or not.

From now on I'll post comic questions in that comic thread, but I wanted to ask again how does it work with the other 7 TPB like these than?

Is that first book just the beginning, like a "to be continued" type story which goes onto #2 and so on, or does it actually cover the entire primary story arc and 2-7 flesh it out more?

These seven shouldn't be trade paperback. The TPB version of Civil War (that pic I posted) collects all these 7 issues in one book.
