Where should I go to grad school?
I know that's kinda a weird question... but you guys can spin it to make this thread about more than just me. Although, personally, I think I'm fascinating.
I wanna do bioinformatics, or something like it, if you care.

in comic books? Like, the degree itself is beautifully inked and laid out in panel form?
What does one do with a degree in comic books?

I wanna do bioinformatics, or something like it, if you care.Lots of different definitions as to what Bioinformatics is. My wife is a Prof of Information and Computer Science, and is classified as an Informatician ... and applies her research across medical, chemical, and environmental science domains. As it stands, I wouldn't recommend her school to you though (they are highly ranked) but the concept of bioinformatics is fractured and not mature there yet.
Stanford is an obvious choice (most bioinfo people track their academic heredity back there in some way). University of Arizona just made a big push in this area as well (lots of funding, hiring lots of big name people ... but it is Phoenix).
Also, try University of Washington. Search for Wanda Pratt - she is joint appointed in medical and info sci ... and might be the sort of person you are looking for, and unless your IP address and specified location is lying, you are in WA not DC, so instate tuition might be an option.

It is a somewhat amorphous field as of yet. My understanding of what the word actually means is something like "The science of managing large data sets related to biology". There seem to be some people who think it also includes any research done on a computer related to the field of interest. Like... theoretical or statistical modelling.
I'm down with any of that though, so it's coo.

Wow. I didn't provide any information regarding my scholastic or financial abilities, yet you nailed both with your recommendation. :P

UT Austin. Ed Marcotte is an amazing PI there. He says he studies "Bioinformatics of protein function and interactions." He's work also gives you a really good idea of what bioinformatics is in regard to molecular biology. Also, Austin is weird, in a good way.

Yeah, I heard about the city of Austin when I was applying for grad school the first time. The pitch was kinda funny. They were all like, "It's Texas, and you're a science nerd, so you'd think it would suck, but it doesn't, we swear. We put all the nerds in one spot so you can hang out with each other."
I pretty much bought it.

I'd recommend somewhere in a colder climate so the grad school beard can have some utility....if only for a few months of the year.
ohh grad school. Adults keep on telling me that I should go to USC or UCLA for grad school (i'm a film major) but I feel like it's more important/useful to just get out there and start doing shitty jobs. Who really cares about degrees when it comes to film?
My parents want me to work for a few years and then go to grad school to get a MBA. I'll probably end up doing that...

This is somewhat true in all business, you can certainly succeed if you're really good at anything regardless of your degree or lack thereof. At least that's what I keep telling myself :). Although it's certainly a stepping stone to help yourself get noticed or to make you resume be put in the top of the pile right from the start.
I go to Iowa State University and I took an introductory Bioinformatics course, and it was quite interesting. Learned about basics of genes, alleles, chromosomes, as well as Genomics and Proteomics. It was basically a course in how computers help in sequencing genomes and searching for matches between DNA etc.
My professor was Drena Dobbs, and she was pretty cool. I would check it out if you're interested in Bioinformatics. I don't want to give a general recommendation though because it is not my field, and its Iowa, which to be honest is not where things happen.
Good luck.
