I just couldn't resist posting this for the PS3 fanboys out there. :D
It seems the advantages of Blu-Ray on the PS3 are finally starting to make a difference in the graphics department as John Carmack discusses id's upcoming game 'Rage' and why it will most definitely look better on the PS3.
Console horsepower aside, id Software's main man John Carmack says that id's upcoming game, 'Rage', will definitely look better on the PS3 thanks to Blu-Ray. Carmack went on to state the reason for this was "due to the compression needed to fit the game's assets on two DVDs," which results in lower resolution textures. According to Carmack it would just cost way too much to go out of the way and make a third disc for the 360 version.

If only you could say that about earlier games of the PS3. But at least it's getting somewhere.

This is a bit misleading. If you look here http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/carmack-rage-to-look-worse-on-360-if-limited-to-two-dvds/, the issue is actually linked to the royalty fees having to do with a third disc. Carmack is trying to get Microsoft to remove the fee so it's a bit more economically feasible. The Rage engine could end up being widely used due to the ease of use in multiplatform development. If widely used, Microsoft won't want all the games using the engine to be graphically inferior just because of these fees.
By the way, how would 2-3 discs work on a 360? I personally don't own one. Would it be constant disc swapping or a partial install?

No installs on any 360 games, so it's be disc-swapping. Probably not constantly, only once per disc, I'd imagine.. So like, the first 1/3rd of the game would be on disc 1.. etc.

Oh ok, but from what I know it's supposed to be an open world game. I guess the whole area will just be divided up into 3 regions (pretty much like you said), and when you cross one of the boundaries, you'll have to pop in the right disc.

Except Xbox is supposed to be getting disc installs later on with this "new xbox experience" thing. Its possible (although very unlikely, I'm sure) that they might let people only have one disc and never have to swap if the entire game is copied to the drive.

Yes, it's true, however, I didn't think the question was about that... Either way, Arcade users won't be able to have that option, so what I said still stands. Not that there won't be options, just there won't be mandatory installs.

Nevermind the fact that Carmack has openly stated the PS3 is much more tedious to code for than the 360...
I couldn't resist...

Two years ago he said that consoles would never over take the PC,
One year ago he said that the PS3 was unusable and that the 360 was the only true next gen system
Now he says this......
Next year, Wii Quake.

Yes and Doom 3 for it's time had amazing graphics but shit for gameplay.

Interesting... to bring some balance to this...
In the same interview:
"There is disc space issue on the 360, and if we cant find a clever way or compromise with Microsoft to address that issue... even though we feel the 360 has superior hardware, the size limitations may mean that we may not have as much texture density or resolution on the 360 version."
"Carmack has long said he thinks that the architecture of the Xbox 360 is better"
"To date, Carmack still feels the architecture of the Playstation 3 doesn't deliver the power promised."
Just goes to show that fan sites can take a bunch of quotes out of context to support just about any arguement.
Hopefully Microsoft can find a solution to this.

haha, post of the week goes to you friend :)
I can't stand the idea of installs, I really really hope that doesn't become necessary on the 360. It would simply be a disc swap when you get to a certain part of the game, like Dolson says.
How big of an install would that game be on the PS3 (time-wise)?

This dude's comments are about as outdated as his haircut.

Couldn't get it to insert????
Edit:I really don't like this guy, never have. Unreal & Unreal Tournament were the better games.
Edit 2: Installs will never be required on the Xbox 360 or 720 or what ever. MS has said that is not what console gaming is about and so far they haven't gone back on there word, unlike it's competitor.

"There is disc space issue on the 360.......
Hopefully Microsoft can find a solution to this.
It's easy! Make an addon Blu-ray drive for the 360. You solve the space issue and pretty much stop me from buying a PS3. Currently I am thinking about buying a PS3 mostly as a blu-ray player. If the 360 had a blu-ray option, I wouldn't bother.

He also said that Doom 3 would look better on an ATI card until it took longer to develop than it was supposed to so that by the time it launched it looked better on Nvidia.

Only problem is that Microsoft won't do that.
If they release a Blu-ray add-on, they won't release games on Blu-ray, so the issue still exists.
Not every user has a hard drive for their 360, and so Microsoft has said there will not be mandatory installs. If they won't allow mandatory installs, they're never going to allow Blu-ray games to go onto shelves.

It really is a great Blu-ray player!! But if you have a HD TV the 360 upscales regular DVD's and they look pretty damn good as well. If you are looking for a game system however, buy it for the games, let the movies be last.
About these mandatory installs.....The only reason PS3 owners are installing is because the Blu-Ray disk can not run at a speed that is good for gameplay. Many of us do not like installing, at least being forced to install, I personally feel if I was going to go through the time consuming feat of installing a game I would get back into PC gaming. Now I may go through and install some of my games when the opportunity arises, but it will be at my leisure, after I play the game and decide it's worth the trouble.
There is nothing I Hate worse then having the excitement of buying a new game and then having to sit and watch a install scene, would much rather be playing it.
OH, and another thing, HD-DVD does not have this problem with slower disk speeds, therefor shouldn't require installs. SO if MS switches to anything it will be a HD-DVD media for there games. Which they will not do until the next XBox comes out as to not devide there markets any.

That's not true - you should know, as you've played Uncharted. There's not a single load time in the game, and there's no install at all.
The only reason PS3 owners are installing is because developers are too lazy to optimize their code.
