The only problem I have with EA's Orange Box port is there is no Dolby 5.1 sound track, from what I can tell. Every single other game I have works fine in 5.1, but not Orange Box. It makes Half-Life 2 unplayable, but Portal is fine.

Hopefully they leave in the Dolby audio for Left 4 Dead, assuming this is true. It's a rumor right now, but that scan is from the Official PlayStation Magazine, so it probably has truth to it.

This is my most wanted game on the 360 right now. Valve can do no wrong so far!

Great news for PS3 owners.

I just hope EA learned enough from porting Orange Box that they won't have any problems this time around. Awesome news though, this is probably my most anticipated multiplayer game.

It's too bad you PS3 people will get an EA'd version, but at least you're getting it.

Does it really make it 'unplayable'? I don't have a surround sound system and I managed just fine.

I don't really have any interest in this game, I think I've got enough shooters for now (though HL2 is my fave shooter of all time, so if anyone can make this great, Valve can), but this is still good news for gamers. Glad to see EA can step up and program for the PS3 where Valve seem to just get scared and go cry in the corner.

Can anyone who has the 360 version of The Orange Box tell me what is so superior about their version? I haven't had any problems with my PS3 copy (I think EA patched it before I bought it so maybe I just didn't get to experience how bad it was before) and was wondering why people say it is so bad.

Yes, it is unplayable. I have to stand right on top of someone who is talking to be able to hear them... Their voices get quieter exponentially as I walk away, which is not normal, and means I can't hear what the hell I'm supposed to be hearing. If the game was designed like this even on PC, then I really don't know how anyone could have done it. But I assume EA screwed something up, and maybe I can solve it by changing my system settings to stereo only, but I'm not dicking around with my setup just to make a shoddy port work sort of on my setup. There's no excuse for leaving out 5.1 sound - the 360 version has it, every other game has it.. No excuse.

I never experienced that problem, and I've played it at a friends place on a 5.1 setup without that problem either, have you tried headphones? Shouldn't you be able to turn a dial on your receiver to set it to stereo? Even going into the XMB to set the sound output to stereo would only take you about 15 seconds, you could probably even do it from withing the game now. I don't think any of these options would require enough of a time commitment to qualify as 'dicking around'.

If it's really not working for you, can you read? Because the game does have subtitles.

Seriously, if you don't play HL2 because of hearing difficulties, then you are missing out on one of the best games ever made. And I really don't think it's a 'shoddy port', it certainly runs better on my PS3 that it does on my PC.

I'll be picking this one up right around the time that EA/Valve can act like grown-ups and announce plans to add the TF2 updates (maps / weapons) to PS3.

I've been lead to believe that will happen right around never.

This is good news for PS3 owners. I have a PS3, but will probably opt for the PC version if I end up buying the game. This is one of those games that makes me sad we won't see cross-platform online play with PC, 360, and PS3.

"While there have been rumors circulating the Internet that claim that Left 4 Dead, Valve's upcoming zombie-filled shooter for the PC and 360, would be coming to the PS3, it looks like there's no truth behind them. We contacted Doug Lombardi from Valve to comment on the rumor and his response was clear: "there is no PS3 version of Left 4 Dead currently in production."

It appears that PS3 owners are out of luck -- at least for now."

If EA does make a ported version of Left 4 Dead, then I guess it's alright. The Orange Box port was just atrocious, but hopefully the EA team learned from that and will make (at least) a half-decent version of L4D for the PS3.

That being said, I'm still going to get it on PC.

Get your pre-orders in, all you Brits!

(Fuck you, Valve, you lying sack of shit!)

Ahem.

A couple websites offering pre-orders hardly proves anything. Don't get so worked up over it until there's something more solid to go on.

Uh, I'd say that's enough proof for me.

It's three websites, one of which was pulled (probably due to strongarm tactics of Valve), plus the fact that the OPM posted this "rumor," it's looking much more real as time goes on. You're right though, it is still a rumor. But I'm pretty sure Valve are just being their typical anti-PS3 selves here, and this game will show up on the PS3.

Regardless of all that, you must admit it's strange that three UK retailers just added a PS3 SKU of the game. It's not like they called each other up and went "hey, let's freak out the internet, let's all post a PS3 version of L4D!" "Yeah, ok!" "Sounds like a plan!"

Orange Box on PC and Orange Box on 360/Ps3 are two COMPLETELY different games. To the point where the 360/PS3 versions are disgraces to the title. Left 4 Dead will likely be similar.

Looks like they're having a change of heart, suddenly.

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/08/22/valves-gabe-newell-admits-ps3-success-re-evaluating-developm/

"While there's "zero chance" for a PS3 version of the upcoming zombie multiplayer game Left 4 Dead this year, there's now a "50-50" chance that it will happen some time next year. While we're fans of Valve's work, we're not entirely sure if the PS3 audience will welcome them with open arms."

50-50 my ass, it's coming. The 50-50 chance is probably 50% EA will finish their port, 50% Valve will tackle it after they launch the 360/PC versions.
