Anybody old enough to be from the 16bit days would remember the bitter school fights over Sega's and Nintendo Mascot.

To this day I'm all about Sonic The Hedgehog. Beside being a funkyer looking character I preffered the speedy run around collect them all kinda gameplay of it all. Especially the new GBA incarnations.

Although in hindsight, I have to Say Mario 3 and Super Mario World are pretty choice games too.

Apparantly the new super smash bros. will have sonic in it. Another reason to buy a Wii :)

What about you guys?

I was always on the fence when it came to Mario vs. Sonic in the 16 bit days... but then i played Mario 64 and in my opinion that is where Mario became better than Sonic, or Sonic lost it, depends on how you look at it.

I bought a Dreamcast as soon as I had cash for it, and boy did I not want to admit to Sonic beeing a turd of a game. Then I bought GBA sonic and I fell in love again :)

Sonic in my mind didn't make a good transition into polygons, but a mate of mine bought it on 360 and he told me it's old school sonic in 3D.

So the GBA stuff is worth getting? What do you guys suggest I get?

I was always a mario fan. I never liked sonic at all. maybe it had something to do with the fact that i sucked at sonic games.

I'll be honest I only played Sonic Advance 1 and 2, haven't gotten around 3 as I sold my GBA to pay rent that week (I'm that loaded).

These games are old I would have imagined you played them allready.

Anyway, the levels them selves are like a continuation of the Genesis games with more color, but the bonus stages are total balls. They are also short. Still wirth the cash as an old school platform junkie it's as good as it'll get :) I had a play with the new(er) DS sonic. It was a short play, but that seemed pretty cool.

Ohh hell yeah man. Since you really don't need to play each one to understand whats going on...Sonic Advance is the best one, and the first. a GameStop or EB should have one used for cheap.

Before Sonic and Mario hit the third dimension, I was a Sonic fan. I had that Sonic and Knuckles cartridge where the top comes off and you could put the old ones in and play with knuckles.. That's so badass.

Anyway, since then I haven't touched a Sonic game since. The games are worse than horrible, maybe horrendous!

It's amazing what alcohol will do to a hedgehog... It's a slippery slope Sonic.. I just pray that he comes home safe.

Speaking of...did anyone play the 360 demo for the Sonic? that, for some reason, was a friggin hard game. they took a good 2 button game and made it amazingly hard to do Sh!t....THANKS SEGA!!!!

Actually all sonic spinoff games were rubbish except for Dr Robotniks mean bean machine. Anybody remember Sonic Drift on Game Gear? There was also an isometric sonic game that was prettty much unplayable.

Paul, do yourself a favour and play some of the newer handheld sonic games, it's like as if it was 1993 all over again :)

The only good Sonic game for the Game Gear was Sonic Spinball.

Before they 3D era both games were exact replicas of each other. You run through a level fast and collect coins and at the end you either run through a sign or jump on a flag. After a few levels you fight a boss. Both fantastic games and I loved them both.

In a game fight Mario vs Sonic ..Sonic easy

In terms of lasting appeal and game quality Mario easily.

I love both and Dreamcast is my fave console ever bust since DC died Sega died and pumps out crap these days sadly.:(

I'm sorry, Wario over Knuckles? That's like choosing Jar Jar over Chewie as a sidekick, man (ow, my geek sense actually burned a little that time).

I love the Mario games, and to me Nintendo can do little wrong, but I'll always be a Sonic boy at heart. Me and my best friend used to come home from school and just beat Sonic 3 for the hell of it, over and over. Definately in my top 3 games of all time.

Also, Sonic Rush for the DS is so much better than it has any right to be. It's the sega equivalent of New Super Mario Bros.

everything about the look and feel of the mushrooom kingdom is just a little bit better than the sonic/dr robotnick thing. the speed and loops in sonic were really great, but once mario could fly and glide and stuff i think that was better as well.

i'd pick mario, cause that dude was my first **wink** **wink** sonic is alright, not great, just alright, and i agree with paul, i had the Sonic and Knuckles game too, that was sick, but mario has always been the better mascot, the mario games are just more fun

Sonic Adventure is my fave sonic game ever made.

I loved Super Mario Bros. more then Sonic. I felt the Sonic games did not give you time to enjoy the boards and the actual game. It went by toooooo fast. where as SMB it is different. to walk and run through the stage and enjoy the graphics. Sonic was toooo confusing to me. I can't remember which Sonic game had a carnival level, but regardless, that level was toooooo confusing for me. and I am a gamer, but that board just blew me away. sooooo difficult. For a few weeks I stopped playing that game.

The two for the time were actually quite different. Mario had all these maps to discover, but the levels themselves were flat and small. There was a lot to discover, but like in Sonic.

If you didn't want to run around there was an opportunity to frollock around a level and discover things. Especially if you played with the feminine Tails you could fly around places. The co-op mode was a bit rubbish. The special power shields in Sonic 3 were the best :)

Well I guess looking back Mario won. I actually didn't play that much Sonic because none of my friends had a Sega. I was more into Zool on my Amiga. That was a kick ass platform game, or at least I thought so at the time.

I'm with redrum here. Sonic games have these huge levels with lots to explore, buy you NEVER explore it all because you're just racing to the end. And seriously, after the first game, not having a level select was INEXCUSABLE. Super Mario Bros 3 had it, and then EVERY Mario game after that. I don't think ANY 2D Sonic games on Genesis had a Level Select, and that was just retarded. If I'm wrong, correct me. I didn't play too muich sonic 2 or 3, but I definitely don't remember that shit, and I know Sonic and Knuckles didn't.

Seriously, you couldn't even save your game. Retarded.

Here I come with corrections! Sonic 3 had a Back up memory thing and it allowed you to save games on Sonic 3 and when you attached it on top of sonic and knuckles you could save those levels too.

The very fantastic GBA versions also allow you to level select after you finished. There were also cheat codes to allow you to choose a level or even build your own levels... kinda.

Then again most platformers didn't let you save games back then. Such as Prince of Persia ,Earth Worm Jim, Vectorman, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Bubsy (I liked it , even if all of you most likely hated it), Aladdin, Cool Spot.

Sonic still reigns supreme! :D

I looove the old sonic. Some of the first video games I played were sonic games.

However. The character has been totally ruined by ****ing awful cartoons and video games.
The Sonic game for the 360 looks like crap.

The old school Sonic has a special place in my gamer heart along with the first and second cartoon.

The cartoon that came out like last year or the year before, is so horrible.
