What do you guys like? Sure anime music isn't my main source of entertainment, but i still like to listen to it.

I am partial to L'arc en Ciel, they do most of the music for FullMetal Alchemist.

what do you guys listen to? what can you recommend?

I can tell you that Ghost in the Shell and the Macross Plus soundtrack were quite an awful experience for me. Is all anime soundtrack so off? I wanted to get the FLCL soundtrack, but I figure it will be the same. One or two tracks from the movie the rest just some dude blowing on paper and clapping with one hand (It does make a sound albeit faint). I should just run around and get a pillows album if J-rock is what rocks my world.

Not a whole lot since I hate J-pop anime music.

Cowboy Bebop
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
FLCL
Escaflowne
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Any score to a Miyazaki film

the music in cowboy bebop is great (jazz and blues). I also really like the opening theme to Gantz (hip hop). It's called super shooter and it's by Rip Slyme but the rest of the bands stuff isn't as good. And some of the songs in samurai champloo (hip hop) are pretty good to.

I'm a big fan of the pillows from FLCL, and The Seatbelts from Cowboy Bepop are great but I have yet to watch the entire series.

Yellow Machine gun is good, nothing like a japanese death metal band composed of women...good stuff.

The Seatbelts are great, and if you like them, check out Samurai Champloo. Hip Hip + Samurai warriors = badass, and the music is all Yoko Kano (the Seatbelts guy), so you know it rocks.

Also, the Read or Die OVA has the single best opening music to anything ever (just barely beating out Firefly, Thundercats and Bebop)

While it's not anime music per se, X Japan is the best 80s hair metal band of all time. Check out the song "Art of Life".

Wow! That makes the inappropriate things I do while I listen to those CDs slightly less disturbing! But, y'know... only slightly.

My bad in assuming, of course. You know what happens when you assume...

Yeah, I would suggest any of the FF scores, even though that's not really anime...

I also like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne. I haven't seen much in the ways of anime, though... L'arc is amazing. =P

I would also suggest Ayumi Hamasaki, who did one of the ending theme's of Inuyasha I found out. She's really upbeat most the time, like L'arc, so I enjoy that. =)

The all girl surfer band from kill bill was called the 5.6.7.8's and the guy that did the main song from the trailer was Tomoyasu Hotei

I've gotta get in on this.

I'm definitely a huge fan of Yoko Kanno and all the work she does with other musicians. Needless to say, there's a lot of really shitty j-pop filling the anime nowadays, which is actually half the reason I won't watch a lot of the new series. Obviously anyone who's seen Cowboy Bebop knows her work. Lots of fantastic blues and jazz on those albums, working with great artists like Ilaria Graziano and Steve Conte (otherwise unknown artists who sound phenomenal.)

She also did all the soundtrack work to Wolf's Rain and Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex. She's the only anime *composer* if you will, that I can even stomach. Like I said most of anime soundtracks are such garbage, but she always works on good anime projects so she's got good material to help fit with the music. It's seriously just awesome music, very powerful. Always great writing and sound to it. I'd recommend her to people that don't even like anime.

I'd recommend for starters, to get any of the soundtracks to Cowboy Bebop, she did them all. Some are Vitaminless, BLUE, No Disc, eh can't remember em all off the top of my head but check her out on Amazon.com or something!

Also, as an ending blurb, I loved The Pillows' music for FLCL. Though I don't have as much info on them, it was great sort of alternative Japanese rock for the series, fit really well.

I forgot the mention the composers for Miyazaki's films always seem to be ridiculously good. The soundtrack to Princess Mononoke blew me the **** away. Those taiko war drums and everything, I gotta get that album. Totally forgot about it.
