View Full Version : Action Figures, not just for kids?

So being the uber geek I am, I collect action figures, statues, and other miscellaneous stuff. I have always seen the parallel between collecting comics, and collecting figures of those characters. Im 25 (have touched a girl before, it was fantastic, would love to do it again) and still have been known to mosey on down to toys 'r' us for a look. How many of you still collect? Is this looked down upon even by other geeks(gasp)? For those of you that find this hobby abhorrent, why? Those of you that still collect, why? Those of you who used to and now do not, why?
My reasons are simple, they make me happy. It may sound silly but when I retire to my lair of geekyness, I sometimes just sit and look around with a giant shit eating grin on my face. I think my friends enjoy it as I catch them eyes wide, and head bobbling on occasion.
Well I would like to hear your opinion, yes you, the one reading this right now.

I like action figures, but I try to limit the number. I gravitate towards stuff designed for display. Like Mighty Muggs, which are perfect for a book shelf. Lately I've been eyeing a Thanos action figure because I'm really into Starlin's cosmic stuff right now.
I don't really buy any new action figures but I have a bunch of old Starcom and M.A.S.K. toys

i like action figures but i don't know if you would call me a collector.
i am not really a fan of statues because they are costly and in my mind not as cool as those kung fu gripped toys.
i tend to pose them on bookshelves and around the computer.

I started buying them about a year ago. It all started with the Lost figures. I have all of them now and some Resident Evil 4, God of War, Final Fantasy, Saw, the Crow, Yotsuba ones.
I wouldn't call myself a collector but I always keep an eye out for ones I might like.
And it was action figures that got me into comics... cos the shop i buy figures in is also my lcs, and i was just curious about the shelves and shelves of comics they had, so I did a bit of research, decided to buy the first Fables trade, loved it... and the rest is history :D

I love toys. Love.
Justice League Unlimited is my primary line. At the moment, I am 4 figures shy from having every character made(minus repaints) and I'm very stoked about that.
Hopefully not all still MIP

Action figures and statues are fine but I think if it's more than a shelf or two on display it is too much. It is bad times when stormtroopers outnumber people in the room 10 to 1.

Shockwave was my favorite toy as a kid. I almost bought a new in box version a couple years ago for $400 but talked myself out of it. I'd love to get it.
Future stuff:
Justice League Unlimited! (http://sdcc08.superherotimes.com/showgallery.php?cat=561&page=1)(click through for pictures.)
Kind of a cheat I know, but the things they are doing in that line are amazing. Mattel has said they are committed to it, even if retail is not and have promised they will get things to collector hands even if they have to distribute themselves(which they've just recently started to do with MattyCollector (http://www.mattycollector.com)).
I had Shockwave too, he was AWESOME. Megatron's gun mode was nowhere near as cool and he was built a lot more filmsily

I leave most all of my stuff boxed. I dont stand very much, most everything nowadays doesnt get shelf space, and it is easier to hang the boxes.

I think if my room suddenly came to life the eastern seaboard would be in some serious trouble.

Marvel legends are my favorite, well at least before Hasbro started manufacturing them. Marvel select has made a few really nice pieces as well. I have a lot of the Hush Batman figures too. I have a handful of statues, Deadpool, Spider Man, Wolverine, Cap, etc. I think I have a problem. My whole collection isnt exclusive to western comics, I have a lot of anime memorabilia.

I bought a lot of figures during the Marvel Toy Biz and McFarlane craze. I mostly regret it because a lot of my McFarlane figures are still gathering dust in a basement. I gave away most of the Toy Biz figures to my sister, who was big into Spider-Man and X-Men in the 90s when the cartoons were big. Nowadays I'll buy the occasional Batman figure. I bought an Iron Man and Wonder Man recently. Just the other day I got out my Raydeen and Micronauts figures and dusted them off and put them in ziplocs. I bought a big mess of Micronauts around 2003 when Palisades reissued the classic figures. I also will buy any Raydeen figure (from the 70s Shogun Warrior line).

Depending on what the figures are of, you may be able to ebay those McFarlanes and get some loot.
Anyone have any really valuable, or rare action figures ? I will take a look at my collection and report back but I am curious what gems you all have.

I have a sick amount of Marvel Legends as well and the only thing I regret is taking the first few series out of their boxes. I love those things, I am only missing the chase figures in most cases.

I used to be all about transformers toys a few years ago. Beast Wars was my all time favorite collection, I had such a blast with those things and their damn ball joints that popped out too easily.
For the past few years though I've really cut back on buying action figures, but every once in a while the kid inside of me gets the urge to go to TRU and check out the new figures that are out and I usually pick one up.
Last week though I went out and bought a Master Chief McFarlane action figure and was pretty disappointed:/

I have been such a kid recently. A few weeks ago a buddy and I went to Toys 'r' Us and bought Nerf guns. I cant believe how cool those guns have gotten. Clip loaded, bolt action, assault rifles that fire darts so soft you dont even know you are shot unless it hits on bare skin. Needless to say if you come into my house there are two darts heading your way, friend or foe. All I had was crappy Nerf pump tubes that fired yellow foam golf balls.
Here is the gun I got:

I've been buying Marvel Legend since Series 1. I have two bins full of them, and many double still in the packs. I like having the superhero toys that I wanted as a kid. Same with the Star Wars lines, finally getting these obscure characters made into action figures is cool to me. Most of the time I take them out and rotate which ones I display.
My current collection goal Fin Fang Foom. I already have found 3 from the Hulk Legends series, 5 more to go.

I'm married and we've got a 2 year old. So I don't have too much out on display. My office has hidden pockets of toys everywhere. The ottoman in front of my easy chair is hollow and full of figures. Plenty in the closet as well, bin of vintage/modern Star Wars and a bin of Marvel Legends.
The wife is cool about the toys though. She collects Silkstone Barbie dolls and Mimobot USB drives. We just hide them from tiny hands.

I'm wrestling with the possible purchase of the new Millenium Falcon that is part of the new Legacy collection series. That ship is awesome, they finally finally finally made the improvements that I've always wanted in that toy. Four seats in the cockpit, a better entry hatch, an interior that is more faithful to the film. It just looks cool.

I collected Star Wars figures before I returned to comics. One day in the dorms, I saw a guy with a new Luke Skywalker figure in the elevator. He mentioned that they'd started making figures again, and I was ruined for about five years. It was Freudian score settling: "They never bought me that Boba Fett when I was a kid! I'll show 'em!"
I stopped collecting when a) I ran out of shelf space and the options were either stop buying Ewoks or buy an additional shelf b) I bought the Episode I figures before I saw the movie... and then I saw the movie.

Ok one of the letters (Ozzie's I think) for whatever reason made me think of a time when my toys turned on me. Have any of you had your toys harm you physically? Have you ever had a Linkin Login stuck in your nose/ear, swallowed legos, ate too much playdough, lets here about it.
Here is my story:
When I was 12ish I ran into my bedroom (being a boy who hated cleaning my room, it was a mess of toys and clothes), and I tripped putting all my weight on my hands unfortunately under my right hand happened to be a GI Joe laying on his back, he was resting (it was some kind of space version so the figure was twice the size of a normal Joe). The force of the impact pushed the foot of the Joe through my palm and to the bone. I stood up looked at my hand, noticed the one inch gash, there was little to no blood so I didnt flip out, then I calmly walked over to my parents and said "I think I may need to go to the hospital". I was right.

When I went to the IMAX theater in Incheon, there was a nice little shop with some great statues. I just googled - They were Gentle Giant Studios figures of Gandalf, Saruman, Darth Vader, Star Wars Imperial Guard, and some others. The Gentle Giant figures are so wonderfully done that a 2D picture simple does not do them justice. Very, very pretty and very fun to look at. I wanted one. They are much cheaper online.
Also a really nice figure of Superman vs. Wonder Woman

and a statue that was he spitting image of Linda Carter.

The site I posted was the Hasbro site. Hasbro makes them, so there's no middle man.
The cheapest you will find a Mighty Mugg is 9.99. You can find them at Walmart and Target as well. You might find Muggs at Amazon, but you have to watch out for shipping costs even beyond the elevated price. I'd suggest looking in your local stores and if you can't find them there, go with Hasbro. If not there, either wait for a convention or go with ebay.

Id say for one as rare as Parker it is worth it. The series one Venom was going for over $30 not too long ago, and that is a normal release.

Yeah I know there's no TF yet, but they didn't even have the Marvel or Star Wars ones online at Toys R Us.
I hope we have them all at like Wal Mart or something... I just really don't want to go to Wal Mart and find they have nothing.
