Hey everyone,

Since this question changes after every press release, I thought I would ponder given all the E3 news the past month. That, and what better community to put this question to than the geek-lords of TRS! Please answer the four questions below using as few words as possible.

1: If you had to choose today, would you purchase a PS3 or 360?

2: What games/features would chiefly inform this purchase?

3: What genre of game do you play most often?

4: What is your favorite game for the console (or your preferred console) that you own?

I don't think there is anything wrong with any of the systems. I have a 360, I sold my Wii and never thought about buying a PS3. I have a PSP and a PS2 so I don't hate sony. But right now there is only one game on that system that looks fun to me and that's uncharted. That game isn't 500+ bucks worth of fun so as of now I pass on the PS3.

I've had a Wii since the week it came out, just bought a 360 the other day, and plan on getting a PS3 in September when the price drops.

Why can't we all just get along??

To quote any decent action movie "MY GOD!!!!!!!!!"

With this one question you have opened a pandora's box on the forum, yet unlike the story, there is no hope left.

Also is it just me or does this seem far too much like market research?

1: PS3, already have one and don't have a 360.

2: None. Rock Band is on both, next FF will be on both (maybe delayed release to 360 though)

3: Music, action, FPS, etc.

4. Rock Band followed by GTA4.

and now for the real reasons I bought a PS3...

Media streaming from the PC, and I bought it from a friend for less than half the retail price.

I own a Wii, XBOX 360 and a PS3.

I uses the XBOX 360 for most of my games, the PS3 as a media player and the Wii gathers dust most of the time.

So, if I had to do it all again I would do it all the same way.

1: I have all 3, but I would take the PS3 as it gets the most play.

2: I have a US 60gig. So all of my PS1 & PS2 games plus all PS3 exclusives. FFXIII might be coming to the 360, but FFXIII will still be PS3 only. Also it will be on one disc.

3: For consoles I get an even mix of FPS, RPG/JRPG, & survival horror.

4: At this moment, Uncharted.

Having Blu-ray was also a big plus for me since I have an HDTV. The PS3 now being Divx certified (360 isn't), a top rated upscaling DVD player, and the streaming media functions are all icing at this point.

The PS3 is more expensive, has fewer games (but that's becoming less of an issue) the big draw is Bluray.

The 360 is cheaper, has more games and you can download and watch Netflix movies on it if you have a Netflix subscription (and live in the US).

Both have great hardware, both can stream from your PC, if Bluray/Netflix doesn't push you over the edge take a look at the (fairly short) list of exclusives for each and decide which one you want to get based on those.

I own a PS3 and Wii, haven't turned on my Wii for almost two months...I will still choose PS3 rather than X360. Most games are multi-platform and I once had an idea to get a 360 for Gears of War and Dead Rising, but my love for MGS4 make PS3 to be my only choice, other 360 exclusives aren't my cup of tea.

Action, RPG

MGS4, the best gaming experience I have ever had. (Uncharted is also really good, or I would say a surprised original title)

Unless I'm mistaken, the netflix deal is only for streaming movies, not downloading. and yes it makes a huge difference.

1: If you had to choose today, would you purchase a PS3 or 360?
PS3

2: What games/features would chiefly inform this purchase?
The game that I bought the PS3 expecting to play (FF 13) turned multi-console, so I'll have to say Blu-Ray and the lack of RRoD.

3: What genre of game do you play most often?
RPGs (JRPG's specifically, as well as SRPGs)

4: What is your favorite game for the console (or your preferred console) that you own?
Rock Band

I believe you're right, I phrased that poorly. From most accounts I've head about the Roku box it's a really good stream though

1: XBOX 360. As much as I hate to admit it, there just aren't that many games that I really want to play on the PS3. Of course, I already have both, so this is a moot point.

2: The 360 simply has the games I want to play right now. Mass Effect, BioShock, Halo 3, etc. Mass Effect was the title that put it over the top for me (especially knowing that more are coming) and Final Fantasy XIII going multiplatform took away one of the PS3's greatest advantages.

3: RPG's, FPS's, arcade games, etc.

4: Mass Effect. I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 as well.

I'd go with both again. Granted, I probably don't use my PS3 for gaming as much as I do 360, but I use its Blu Ray player just as much. While I'm glad I got the 60GB PS3 when I did, if I had to buy ONLY one today, I would go with 360.

The 360 would mostly be a purchase because of the friend factor. Not only do more people I know have 360s, but it's a lot more portable so I can bring it to friends without one. The PS3 is just so oddly shaped and heavier that it's just not the type of system to bring places. If I'm choosing purely from a gaming point, it'd be PS3. Looking at my 360 collection, the only exclusive game I would miss would be Mass Effect. As a huge MGS fan, I would need my MGS4 fix.

I play a wide variety of genres. The only ones I don't really like are the sports/simulation games unless they have an arcade feel to it.

Favorite game for 360 is Mass Effect. Favorite for PS3 is MGS4.

I say all 3.
They all offer something the industry has lacked for years.
Parity.
Each has their own unique qualities and we the gamers benefit from it.

Seems like there's one of these threads every week or two...

Anyhow, personally, I went with the Wii originally, on the allure of a new way to play games, to be immersed in the experience, and even though I hate Star Wars, a 1:1 lightsabre game... None of that met expectations, and my Wii gathers dust.

So, PS3 is my choice. Reasons I chose PS3: free online play, no RROD, Blu-ray disc (no swapping + movies), PSone support, unique PSN downloadable games, BlueTooth and standard hard drive support, Dualshock design (I don't like Microsoft's sticks), only a couple interesting 360 exclusives (which I could play on PC if I wanted to anyhow).

Games I like: Resistance, Oblivion, Warhawk, Battlefield, MGS4, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted.

Future: Resistance 2, God of War 3, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM, Killzone 2, Mirror's Edge, plus many more.

I love all kinds of games.

I have all 3, but if I had to choose only one I'd go with the 360.

Most of my lifelong friends have a 360, and I like being able to get on and play with those guys like we did in the old days. It is also the one I tend to play the most often.

I play most game types. I play sports titles and rpgs a little less frequently.

My favorite game for the system is probably Call of Duty IV.

1: I already own a PS3, so I'd buy a 360

2: I doubt I'd game on it, I'd get it for downloadable movies

3: FPS games on my PC, I rarely game on my PS3, If the question is which console game I'd likely go with Motor Storm racing game, it's waaay to fun.

4: Motor Storm

Xbox fan here.

I bought a 360 because of Uncharted ad someone told me how AWESOME there online service was. What I didn't realize is my friend had never used XBL, so my PS3 is now a really damn good and expensive DVD player.

We've got all 3 systems in the house, all of my console gaming is on the 360 though.

I find all 3 systems to very disappointing and all to be underachieving and over-priced. Worst of all, they are so full of restrictions and limitations that it drives me nuts. From the game elements that are left out so you are forced to buy extra content online to get the complete gaming experience, to restrictions on mouse and keyboard use, paying online fees, RROD errors on the x-box, games that have less features than prior-gen games, no 4-player splitscreen co-op support all around. Personally the Wii is my least favourite, it has so few games that use the controller properly, but most games that do use it are just annoying gimmicks. It's a gamecube with new controls (but the gamecube was a disaster last gen so that's not a good thing at all). And man, the online lobbies and chats are so poorly designed in inefficient.

I say the winner is PC, free online play, unlimited customizability and unlimited expansion through mods, editors, etc. Larger games, cheaper games, MORE games, better graphics, more options. And now with the cost of PCs so rediculously cheap, for the price of a console, and all the add-ons you need, you can have a badass machine freely delivered to your doorstep. That's service :)

Then if you don't have much money you can even 'acquire' games for free for those that need to, hehe.

Thanks to all of you fine people who responded. Sorry I didn't put an actual poll on there, and my verbiage was a little "market research"-ish (I guess it technically is market research, since I've gotta figure out which system to sit next to my dusted Wii).

And the best part?!? The only baseless fanboy/flame comments were from people thinking that the thread would devolve into a flame war. No actual flaming. Awesome!

Seems like, as expected, both systems are really good at doing certain things and worse at others. Some features are more or less important to each person, so I guess I'll wait to see if 360 does their September price cut, and if LittleBigPlanet actually comes out...

I have all 3. I prefer the 360 to all consoles at the moment. I bought the PS3 mostly for blu-ray. If a game comes out on all 3 or even the big 2 then I'll buy it for the 360.

PS3 for the bluray player I guess? I've been into PC gaming this cycle (though I still fire up the gamecube on occasion).

1: If you had to choose today, would you purchase a PS3 or 360?

I'm sticking with my X360 choice, again, especially with the price drop in the tubes.

2: What games/features would chiefly inform this purchase?

The controller, to be honest. I can't stand the DualShock anymore, I feel like I've been spoiled by the controller for the X360. Beyond that, I prefer the way the LIVE Dashboard is filled out, the blade system is brilliant, and it works really, really well. The PS3 just feels "clunky" far too often.

3: What genre of game do you play most often?

For me, its pretty much all racing titles and FPS games. Hence the reason why I hate the controller on the PS3 so much, it just makes those games too "finicky" to play. No doubt that they are quality titles (after all, Gran Turismo is still the reason why I will get a PS3), but it just doesn't feel "right."

4: What is your favorite game for the console (or your preferred console) that you own?

Now that is a very tough question...

I'm going to have to say PGR4. I like the "balance" between the cars and the arcady/sim feel to the game. The graphics are stunning, there is a great community behind it, and its the one game that I continuously keep going back to over, and over, and over again.

I own all 3 of the current consoles. The 360 gets the most use BY FAR from me. I just love the whole package of the system, the dash, Live, the achievements, the controller, the games, ect.

However with the imminent release of Little Big Planet my PS3 may finally be dusted off.
