Fun fact - I've never seen any of the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks. I'm not a big fan of getting the crap scared out of me.
I know it's crazy. Billy Bob playing Freddy. Anyway, I enjoyed the first and 2nd Nightmares after that they got silly like Friday 13th.

This is, it's so fake it's funny. All of them. Even when I was a kid I laughed my ass off, and I've always been one to get nightmares easily. Sometimes my nightmare give me nightmares the next night. Still, Freddy was/is funny.

Don't know, never saw it, didn't ask him much about it.
He told me that his death scene was considered 'unique', and fans really liked his character. He's 40 and married now. I introduced him to Dave Brubecks 'Take Five". I've known him for about 12 years, had some good vegas trips with him.

"I am the Wizard Master!" I had a crush on him and the deaf guy, Joey, growing up.
That movie was so epic. Although, now that I think about it, I had no business watching it when I was five years old. Anyway, absolutely love the Dokken song and accompanying music video with the drummer in the furnace fire. For anyone who hasn't experienced the awesomeness:

Billy Bob, eh? An interesting choice for the role. I must say I'm more intrigued to see what he can do with the character than anything else, really.

I agree with that, Englund IS Freddy...I don't think anyone else will be suitable for me.

His name is Ira, have known him for a long time and we even fooled around with the same girl, but we made fun of him being in Elm St., and the Elvira movie, (he made fun of himself) so I never asked him serious stuff about it, mainly cus I've never seen it and don't care.
I'm really interested in seeing what you guys think of Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon. Robert Englund and Scott Wilson are in it. (and the guy who played Jason, in a non-speaking cameo, who was also in the skateboard movie Grind). It's a VERY different take on slasher flicks, both funny in a non-traditional way but with traditional slasher horror. My neighbor directed it.

The very end of Elvira when she is just wearing tassle twirling pasties was the first time I met Peter as a kid.

I don't know what that means, and I think I don't want to. Do you remember Ira in it ?
I just IMDB'ed him, he was also in Zapped Again, and some late 90's tv....Lois & Clark, Family Matters, some after school specials which I knew about, but I didn't know he was in an episode of Family Ties (yay). More recently, Alias.
Damndedeyes, it was Elm St 3.

Wait, you enjoyed Leslie Vernon ??????
Yup, that's him. I used to party with him 5 nights a week, 3-5 bars a night, 10-12 years ago. I was part of a big group of actors and bartenders that partied together alot, regular sunday BBQ's, non stop for about 3 years. Now, I just run into now and then, and he acs funny around me cus he has a cute lil jewish wife, and he doesn't want me to mention the times we spent $700 on strippers in vegas, etc.
EDIT. O I C, I read too quickly. Well, when you watch the DVD extras, you see the dog Bailey?, that's how I met Scott the director. His dog comes to my house all the time and just sits down like he lives here. Hangs out like it's his place. Scott is actually a hell of a piano player. I went to a party at his house and I showed up at 1am, and everyone was trashed, including Scott, but he sat at the piano and started wailing and everyone was singing along..... I felt weird, cus they'd been hanging for hrs drinking and eating maryland crabs, and I had just shown up, all sober.

I don't remember anything about the film except the first time I saw boobs. Good thing it was Cassandras..maybe she is the reason I grew to like redheads.
Though she is like 60 now still playing elvira ..time for her to quit.
Also I remember zapped again..film sucked but hey again more nudity as a youth

Are you serious, she stil plays elvira ???
Never seen any elvira anything, other than commercials. It was horrible wasn't it ?
WOW. Just looked her up, is in fact 57 and still playing Elvira. Isn't it totally tarnishing her 'legacy' at this point ?

I just did a wiki also she apparently also will pass the torch to some impersonator to continue the character.
They should just leave the character in the 80's not have it pass down IMO.
Just quit the elvira thing alltogether.

Nightmare 3 was always my favorite. I think it was just the whole it's-your-dream-so-you-can-be-whoever-you-want aspect of it. It's also cool that Frank Darabont worked on the screenplay.
Thornton playing Freddy doesn't quite sit well with me. I guess I just can't imagine anyone other than Englund.

But Englund put a personality on the character that IS Freddy.
What does Billy bob bring that he brings to everything else.
A Drunk guy who acts like a total asshole..so all Billybob will bring to Freddy is Billybob.

SERIOUSLY. What the hell else is he doing other than making shitty b movies? I saw the 2001 maniacs a while back and it was terrible... granted I watched it for giuseppe andrews, but that's besides the point. The movie sucked.

The makeup isn't so heavy as to disguise him completely...you can still see Freddy in Englund, particularly when he's snarling.
And, Englund was in later movies in the series...one, as a character in the asylum where Freddy's mother was locked in, the other being New Nightmare where the actors from the original play themselves.
That Asylum scene works well with him, since there is still enough resemblance that you can see that 'oh, this guy is the father'.
I'll give him a shot. You'd think Ledger would have trouble playing a psychopath like Joker but he did. I'll wait and see how screwed up this becomes.
Maybe they can salvage it as a romantic comedy.

I thought Billy Bob wasn't completely confirmed? Hurm...
I've never been a fan of the franchise (or the genre in general), but it would make things interesting to say the least. Whenever my friends and I talk about scary movies, I'm always nostalgic for the 70s/80s originals, nothing can ever top them.
But lets be honest here, is a remake even necessary?
====
Oh, and just to throw an idea out:
I think it would be a bit more "cool" if they did an all-CGI remake instead...

I thought it was a rumor! So billy bob is really going to play freddy?
i am all for giving remakes and reboots a try when it comes to the horror franchise, i loved the 1990 night of the living dead remake, the dawn of the dead remake, the wizard of gore remake, i thought the halloween "reboot" was great and the friday the 13th looks pretty good
but billy bob as freddy? i think i will pass on this if it is true, freddy isn't like michael myers or jason vorhees, freddy has a unique body language only 1 man in the world can pull off freddy and it isn't billy bob
maybe its just me but if this is true frak this, i wont even watch the trailer.

Since Freddy is just "an actor covered in makeup" I guess we can get anyone, then? Like others mentioned, you can tell it's Englund, and it's his personality that helped shaped Freddy.
Aintitcool.com says it's BS and that Thorton isn't confirmed and that was just commentary by Englund on who he thought would do good.
