I think there's a good reason every official mascot or de facto mascot ends up getting too many games with more than half of them being just plain bad or just the same thing over and over again. Mario and Sonic are prime examples of this.

Mascots are pointless on a good platform with a good mix of developers who are all competent. They might've been necessary for the old consoles, but really, why should they exist for the new ones?

I can already see/hear some of the jokes/insults about 'sackboy' that'll be thrown around if this happens.

Sony with LBP and the new mascot I think is attempting to also grab a more broad audience of people that relates to everyone, not selling the same old MGS,FF,GOW stuff to the same people..that will only carry you for so long(see Sega and N64/GC yet again)
You can have both just that relying on the same IPs won't carry you forever but will still sell regardless but to the same people.
Nintendo found it's niche to sell Mario to one group and Wii series to another and sometimes those groups end up buy into both to get people to get the N brand.

LBP will grab new and old fans for the PS brand.

Sometimes things take a break then come back and it's time for a comeback.
Maybe more seasoned gamers see not much need but think from a parents POV or a kids.

Nintendo always had a face all ages can appeal to always grabbing new and old fans like Mickey Mouse.


Kratos/Halo/Snake for the most part will only sell to s certain age crowd.

As for too many of them or plain bad..that happens to anything popular eventually of ANY genre/series.

I wish they'd release a Sackboy Customization Tool, sorta like Spore Creature Creator... To fuel the hype train... You know what I mean.
