I've got a few fairly large hard drives laying around, not being used in any of my PC mainly because they are IDE drives. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good cheap NAS boxes. I'd really extremely rather not build a pc and use freeNas. Obviously it needs to accept IDE drives, and probably also SATA (in case I add to it). Would like support for at minimum 2 drives. Ethernet only. Anyone know of anything good?

Unfortunately, everything I've seen that supports multiple drives comes in the SATA form factor.
Your best bet is to buy the cheapest components you can and get a small enclosure to build yourself a freenas or openfiler box.
Those solutions will give you the most flexibility possible.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Best of luck,
Matt

Netgear NAS can accept external drives plugged in via USB. Put the old drives in enclosures, and connect to the Netgear unit. Wont be a speed demon by any means, but it might work for you for backups and stuff yo dont need spooled fast (like on a media server).

The price of nas boxes may stay up a little while, But I bet they might drop like a rock now that there is starting to be some real competition. By the time you get a drobo, droboshare, drives, and a popcorn youare talking 1200 dollars retail. You can build a nas with mythtv for half that. I think the smallnetbuilder website is showcasing all the new nas boxes coming on the market.Be patient and you will be rewarded. I still use my linksys nslu2 as a portable nas, It will even run linux. Linksys really dropped the ball in discontinuing it. Rumor has it that cisco might dump linksys. I hope not.
