Did they tell Dolby to get a new commercial/thing in theaters? I'm getting really tired of the "dolbee" thing.

...Would be nice to have a version NOT in dolby headphones... for those of us listening on our desktop speakers. PITA to hear this stuff without headphones.
Other than that, another good episode.

I just saw the episode. Put my Sennheisers on. Sounded great.
Although there was a high pitched background hum, and the beer cooler sound came from the left instead of the right, where the cooler actually was.

If you noticed in the back there was another microphone. Before he grabbed a beer from the cooler he clicked on that mic which was picking up the cooler sound, and the cooler is to the left of the mic.

About the Apple vs PC thing... when Apple first released their products they were closer priced to the PC equivalent at the time. Apple hasn't updated their products in a while so a gap has grown. There's some rumors about Apple updating the Macbook/pro series and when they do that I'm sure they will reclose that gap.

heh - awesome episode.
As for the hard to listen to thing, some people don't like the sound of speech on decent speakers - my dad prefers the tinny inbuilt speakers to the 2.1 speakers I set up for a while... (I was listening to loads of music using a dvd player at the time)

I know why it happened. That doesn't make it any less annoying. To make the audio appear correct from the viewpoint of the camera, the audio from that mic should have been flipped. You're trying to make the audio make sense for the listener/viewer. Alternatively, the mic could have just been positioned correctly. (That would be to the right of the cooler). No point in making a headphone-centric episode if this sort of errors are being made. Imo.
I'm just saying .. the whole point is using a hightened stereo effect. Then, make sure all mics are in the right place, or flip sources accordingly.

Really......... Is there any competition look at them use them. I've used both. I do IT work for both Mac and PC. I've used them at home and work. I've had A Mac book as my primary computer and a windows laptop as my primary computer and in the end.
I'd rather use my $600 PC laptop over that over priced POS Mac book, I gave to a poor sap who wanted to buy it off me for $100.
I bought the mac less then a year ago today and the PC over two years ago. Go figure Apple's cat named OS is not what I wanted or needed.

That guy who got 'stuck' in a bench was a pretty hilarious story....although I'm trying not to LoL over someone else's pain. But come on! Why would you do that? Has any guy on these forums done something like this? (although I'm not sure if anyone would admit to this type of thing) :p

Mac/PC troll-baiting article on Diggnation?
Not withstanding that given how you frame the requirements, you set up one side or another to win, even equating "fit and finish" at 0, the article was written as a "troll" piece for traffic. Is a PC laptop with a Merom CPU going to be cheaper than a Penryn? You betcha. The iMac comparison is worse; Dell and Gateway's all in ones are more expensive across the board. They are also slightly slower but have better "Office TV" capabilities.
It always irks me the guys don't have the toolset to shrug off the trolls.

yes, for awhile now,
other than that,i listened on some cheap earphones to this episode but the separation used just didn't work, alex was just in the left side and kevin on the right and nothing in between, only when the shuffling of the beer bottle sounds did i get the idea of 3 dimensional sound.

It's too bad you guys weren't interrupted by the cooler mic more often, that would have been funny. They should have rigged up a belch mic to catch all the Alex action. I personally use two Polk audio speakers from 1962 for my computer, so I didn't get the added Dolby benefit, but such is the life of one such as I.
Also, Mac's are overrated and overpriced. Fundamentally they are good, fine product... but, still. The reason why they have the following they do, is because they appeal to the vanity of man.

ugh, sigh. another useless "I hate macs" flame from an fanboi. Honestly, so the fuck what?! they do the same basic shit. Value is more than just a price tag. Sure, some people will buy Macs because they "look cool." But other people are willing to pay more for, in their opinion, a better OS, better build quality, and a better computer, whatever. I use a Mac because, in my experience with Windows computers (some cheap and some expensive) have all had problems, buggy, etc. I switched to a Mac and I love the user experience of the Mac and find it far more appealing. So the value of the user experience is important to my computing life. Don't chide people just because they chose a computer that's different from yours, and in your opinion, not as good as yours. Glad you like Windows, a lot of people do. I like my Mac, as do a lot of other people, and we aren't dumb just because we spent a little more on a computer. We just value more than the face value of the price tag.

I've been to Hershey before, and I have been through the Chocolate Auschwitz before. Also I've been to the actual production factory where they really make the chocolate. It's unaccessible to the public, but my dad at the time was a grocery store manager who had a friend that worked for Hershey so my dad was able to get myself, himself, my mom, and my sister all a tour of the factory. It was pretty amazing, and I must say, clean. It was probably one of the cleanest buildings I've ever been in, and all the employees were really happy and kind. But the best thing was that at the end the tour guide took us into a room and told me and my sister (about 13 and 10 years old, respectively, at the time) to take off our hair-nets and load them up with as much candy as we could fit...and needless to say we did, and our pockets, and my parents hair nets.
In the episode Alex pointed out there were lamp-posts shaped like Hershey kisses and chocolate fountains in public areas. There were the lamp-posts, but i never saw a fountain. I doubt they are real too...imagine how gross they would get in one day alone.
Anyway, funny episode...the dolby man seemed more then happy to show off the microphone stuff, which was interesting, but i don't need to hear a podcast like that ever again lol.

Its funny that the episode which was recorded with dolby headphone quality, was one of the worse sounding episodes (aside from that live show). I dont have dolby headphones to try it out, but I think audio quality should be good regardless of how your listening to it. It would be *nice* to have a better quality sound when using the headphones, but when the audio sounds worse for people who dont use headphones, thats lame.

As sad by others, it's probobly your system.
Used a 2.1 system and well the quality was quite awsome even then. The bass was swoofy and groovy, the high tones was crystal clear and well overall a really nice sound.
Altho i got better sound with headphones since well it was recorded for headphones. Actually thought they were in my living room for a second.

yea... I kind of felt the same way, but then again it's tech dedicated to having headphones, so obviously it's going to suck on not headphones. It's like taking a 7.1 surround source and playing on 2 speaker setup...
In any case, it sounded decent on my hdtv's speakers. It was horrible when he was digging around for beers, as that sound seemed to cover up everything else. Sounded odd at the beginning, but either got better or I got used to it about half way through.

Best episode EVER. They should record in Dolby headphones more often. If you have a desktop you have a headphone jack unless it is 10+ years old. If not invest in a 5.1 surround system. This is the second episode that I have seen where they (mainly Alex) seem more relaxed and the two had me bustin up laughing.
Ok gotta give Dara Torres props for having a child in 06 and STILL looking like that and while her FHM pics look sexy she scares even me and I do weightlifting.
Oh and be kind, I use both OS X and windows and I still didn't know they had the backgrounds out. Its called needing time to do the research for those of us working full time with families and continuously educating ourselves. It can be a science for balancing time. The forums are a very useful tool to speed it along if someone already knows the answer.
Here's one. Most sci-fi geeks have heard of the 501 1st for SW lovers right (bikerscouts, stormtroopers etc) are there local diggnation legions or groups that do meet-ups in different towns?

I actually have to agree. There is a lot of disgruntlness but we are talking about the pionear of surround sound here so the source (original source) is not the problem it is the destination device it is played on. My 5.1 system at home played awesome and even my Headphones played decent for a $20 pair. Let's face it the best out are not the over-the-ears headphones. they are the earbuds that block ambient noise. If you are trying to play it through anything that is a mono device THAT is the problem.
That said I believe the loss in sound "levels" is an issue with the encoding tools for the various formats. I have the same issue as the G4 podcast where their volume is too low. Revision 3 shows are better but every now and then I have show that is just too quiet.

Agree whole heartedly. Kevin is right, computers are a lot like cars for value-added. A neon and a lexus IS F both have the same basic stuff to get you from point A to point B, but there is no comparing the experience of driving one to the other. The value-added factor of macs gives Apple the highest consumer satisfaction ratings in the personal computer world. http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=9716
From observing my PC friends, I think when you add up the value of your time spent fixing PCs vs the value of my time ($150/hr) spent fixing my Macs, your PC is more expensive in the end.

umm, are you paying a premium for the hardware, software, both? The prices quoted put $800 difference between comparable Macs and PCs. Is the slicker hardware and OS worth it? To some, yes. to the average user, most likely not. The fact is, that while yes a BMW gives you a different experience, the average users don't/won't see the benefit in spending twice as much or more on it.
