I know there has been talk about PREACHER being turned into a movie or an HBO series, but I saw this posted today.
PREACHER on HBO (http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/11/29/preacher-comic-coming-to-life-on-hbo/)
I am so excited. I am on book four of the graphic novels...just saw the origin of The Saint of Killers (amazing!). I can't believe how much I love this book and how long it took me to read it.
I think the Johnny Cash song.."God's Gonna Cut You Down" would be prefect in the series. I downloaded it today and can't get Preacher out of my mind when I hear it.

Let's not start the circle of jerk of speculations just yet. According to the article, Mark Steven Johnson, the man who help bring us a subpar Daredevil movie, is writing it...yeah, I'm not getting my hopes up.

No, that's wrong for Cassidy, he's way to young and pretty boy looking. Cassidy should be a Steve Buscemi sorta guy.

There doing amazing things with makeup these days. If you seen Dead Like Me? Buscemi has the perfect look but I don't think he can pull of a Irish accent. Tim Roth would be a good choice for Cassidy too. I don't want Sam Elliot to be involved in another bad/potentially bad comic book adaptation(he's already done Hulk and Ghost Rider).

This is some seriously great news. There is no way this could be done properly on any other network. Anyone who has seen The Wire, The Sopranos, or even Deadwood knows that HBO is the absolute best place for serious television to thrive. Any other network would not take this seriously, casting a Hugh Laurie as Jesse and produce the crappiest, market tested version of Preacher you could imagine. In terms of casting, I agree about the no big name thing. But you know who should play Jesse right, Robert Knepper...the guy who plays Tea-Bag on Prison Break! (And yes, I am expecting a huge backlash on this one)

in an issue where cassidy is telling jesse about his origin he says he is around 80 or 90, but looks like he is 25. jesse agrees. he lived a hard life with drugs and all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Steven Johnson is adapting the pilot. This is the same guy that did Daredevil (does anyone want me to remind you what a disaster that movie was?) The director...Howard Deutch, thats right the guy that brougt you Pretty in Pink and Grumpier Old Men. Interesting choices to say the least.

There have been rumors of Preacher movies and HBO series for years, so I don't want to get too excited until this is more solidly confirmed. But then I will get so excited I might just piss my pants.

For Jesse id stick with James Marsden who was attached a few years back.
Tim Roth could pull off a pretty convincing Cassidy I think.
Tulip needs to be a chick who is a good looking chick but also strong, I dont know why but Emily Van Camp keeps popping into my head as Tulip but she may be too young. Female roles are damn hard to cast.
Sam Elliott or Kris Kristofferson would be good as Saint of Killers.
Nuh whuh abuh uhhfuhh?

True that this has been going on for a while, but this is the closest its ever been to actually happening. Ennis confirmed back in May that HBO was sniffing around the property and now its actually in motion. Im extremely optimistic about this happening mostly because of Ennis and Dillons involvement.
Its still way to early but how does everyone think they do the show? A season for each trade or what.

how many issues are there total? what is the time span from start to finish? i think each issue could translate to a single episode..an hour would be good to spend on an issue. i just don't know if 8 years or whatever would hold up cast wise on this...maybe 5 season?

I know for a fact it is because of Heroes, I just watched the last 2 episodes last night. She is still the best I could come up with little thought. How about Brittany Murphy or Jamie King? (both could use a steady job)

That is way too long. Some of the comics are much faster paced than others, and doing a TV show, it wouldn't work like that. You need a realy good writer who can take the series and turn it from a comic series that really works to a TV show that really works. Shot-by-shot may have worked for the Sin City film, but I wouldn't want to see that in Preacher.

I am a little worried that they would drag this out into a full series rather than a mini-series. The comics obviously have an end and I hope that HBO keeps it that way. I would hate to see an open-ended series that drags on after they use the material from the comics.

There are 66 regular issues, the 4 issie Saint of Killers mini series, and the 5 double size one shots, so overall thats about 80 regular sized issues or 1760 pages of material.

I didnt mean shot by shot adaptations I just meant for all the events in each trade because pretty much every event in the series affects other events in the series so it would be pretty hard to just strip away sub plots. I also didnt mean a "regular" tv season for each trade more like an 4 part miniseries or something for each "season".

Okay, that makes so much more sense. I misunderstood you at first. And while I agree that the comics are tightly plotted and really need all the subplots, I still think assigning an arbitrary time scale is problematic. Are they doing this as a regular length TV show, or miniseries style?

Theres really not much information out there right now about how they are going to do it but HBO usually has smaller seasons than regular tv shows so its hard to tell what course will be taken.

Just read this on Comic Book Resources,
While we're discussing projects from director Mark Steven Johnson, he's quoted at Sci Fi Wire about HBO's ambitions for the series. "I gave [HBO] the comics, and I said, 'Every issue is an hour,'" Johnson said. "And it's exactly the book. ... I had my meeting yesterday, and ['Preacher' creator] Garth Ennis is on the phone, and we're all in the room, and Garth is like, 'You don't have to be so beholden to the comic.' And I'm like, 'No, no, no. It's got to be like the comic.' So that's what's so brilliant about it. It's just like, HBO, who else would do it but them? Nobody. ... HBO is just like, 'Bring it on.' There was going to be a movie made of Preacher a while ago, and I read the script, and it broke my heart. Because I'm like, 'Oh, it's not a two-hour movie. Preacher's six yearsÑsix dedicated years of the most incredible stuff you've ever seen in your whole life. So I always thought HBO was the only way to do that."

So each comic being an hour that makes it anywhere from 66-80+ episodes depending on how they handle the Saint of Killers min series and the double size one shots and final 2 double size issues.

I guess that's cool. The proof will be the show, though. And they have to do the Saint of Killers miniseries, that was just awesome.
