Sublime and puzzling, you must try Braid! Is Tropic Thunder the new funniest movie of the Summer? Does Bionic Commando live up to the nostalgia? A laptop LANparty? We go to Dallas for ROGCon.

Watch And Download The Entire Episode Here!!! (http://revision3.com/trs/acteroids/)

I can't download the episode.. I tried iTunes and it didn't work so I tried downloading the HD and Large from the site and got a mp4 file at 345 bytes... =/
=(

Edit:
AH! It's totally working from the Revision3 site. I tried downloading it from Totallyradshow.com... That didn't work!
Happytime!

It's funny, during the intro to Braind, the background sequence was showing the part of the game that I'm stuck on!!! Now I know what I was doing wrong:D Great show, and I'll make sure I demo Bionic Commando before I buy it.

Another Rad filled episode.

Tropic Thunder WAS epicly fun, i can't wait to own it on DVD. I was crossing my fingers that when they showed the trailer for that football movie they were gonna suprise me with a Henry Poole is Here review, just because I really want to see that movie, but I live in the middle of nowhere so it isn't playing anywhere remotely close.

Great Episode, I'll check out Braid but i'm up in the air about it.

-- On A Side Note: Hopefully soon we'll get a Burn Notice review, I keep my fingers crossed every week lolz

Awesome show guys, while I think Braid was good, I don't think it was as great as Dan or Jeff. Also Bionic Commando Rearmed is awesome and I think it is far more fun to play then Braid and has far more replay ability.

Great show as always. Intro was hilarious.

As for Braid, I'm gonna agree with... Wombat from CAGCast since I don't agree with TRS guys here. Well, I might, but they never brought up the pricing point. I liked it, but I don't think it's worth $15, but more like $10. I get why it was priced that way, but still. Still think it was a great game, but I wouldn't put it on my top 10 or anything.

Best Opening Ever (okay, seeing the guys shake their butts in Bettlejuice still tops it)! It felt like a big wet kiss from the guys to all us chicks who grew up watching that movie. I am still waiting for my birthday cake while sitting on the kitchen table with my own personal bo hunk (is there a female between 25-40 who doesn't dream of that actually happening?).

So in all of that, is Braid kid okay?

Dan, thank you. Great PSA. Douchebags is appropriate.

Great girls name! I love them, that is great.

Great show guys.

Braid sounds like Donkey Kong '94 (original Gameboy) with time travel elements. Wish I had an xbox to try it out. The characters are kinda ugly though. But DK94 had that similar platformer/puzzler aspect. And there were definitely levels that took some real thought on how to finish and when I did figure it out I felt very rewarded. I have to say I did start to fall asleep a little bit when Jeff was going on and on about Braid and its creator.

Bionic Commando is another game that makes me wish I had a 360. Even though I played the original as a kid, I didn't really discover my love for it until in my later years. The GBC game blew me away so I went back and dusted off the NES version. Loved it. Bought the version for the original Gameboy and loved it as well. Just seeing that little clip of all the swinging mechanic makes me want to play the game.

I am still your biggest fan though :)

Get in line, bub. :) But, seriously, I saw the photo and immediately thought "Whoa boy, folks are gonna complain about that." The cuckoo clock was particularly apt, though! Just when I thought we were going to witness a Paula Abdul-esque meltdown, Jeff pulls it out in Video Games (mind out of the gutter, you) and delivers an incredibly coherent discussion of the Multiplayer interview. Plus with Dan's convincing "what makes stuff good" explanation (in that thoughtfully disjointed way only he can do) and Alex's reference to Erol's Video, it was a good job all 'round, guys!

Alex thinks neither Portal nor Braid is a puzzle game? *scratches head*

intima
08-20-2008, 01:30 AM
mmm, Alex's defiinition of a "puzzle game" seems pretty outdated. Also, I thought Jeff should've actually given his opinions on the game more, rather than banging on about "the creator was trying to convey this..." etc. Just didn't really seem like a review, more a lecture.

Nevertheless, I've read that interview and it is "fascinating". Oh, and Braid is up there with the best games I've played this year, if not longer - it's a shame Alex didn't really appreciate it. If he had played further than world 4 and experienced some of the more advanced mechanics and puzzles maybe he wouldn't say that it's just a platformer.

Oh, and the ending is GENIUS.

heyseuss
08-20-2008, 01:41 AM
mmm, Alex's defiinition of a "puzzle game" seems pretty outdated.

All games have puzzles in them. A game that was structured for the gameplay to be made of puzzles, is a puzzle game. A game with a different gameplay structuring, (everything else), is just the medium in which puzzles exist, but are not exclusively, the gameplay.

Also, I thought Jeff should've actually given his opinions on the game more,

Same with Dan's review of Tropic Thunder, he spent 2 mins saying he agreed with the other two guys, and moved on.

Which brings me to,
Frankly, I don't think trailer reviews belong in the show. They're not really, 'reviewable'. The only point of having them in the show, is to let the guys determine a gauge of their exciemtent for the film. Kinda useless, especially when they don't later review the movie.

I disagree, I think trailers DO belong in the show. I rarely have time to keep up with all the film/videogame/TV news, and watching TRS is a good way to catch up with the latest stuff that the guys deem interesting (which happens to be pretty close to what I'm interested in).

Agreed, they're not "reviewable", and they need to change the way they go about discussing things in non-review segments, but that's a reason for change, not to scrap it altogether.

The game kind of looks like Chronotron on Kongregate.

http://www.kongregate.com/games/Scarybug/chronotron

It doesn't look as full featured as braid looks, but hey, it's free.

Speaking of which, you guys should do some casual game reviews. It'd be awesome to see a Dolphin Olympics 2 review. I don't really have time to game anymore, but casual games are good for a few minutes of fun.

I think they are par with 'news'.

Also, not sure the trailers and movies they review are chosen based on 'interesting'. Looking back, some movies and trailers were kinda random, not enjoyed by any of them, 'meh' was used in the review alot, and since ignored.

I'm the guy in the black T-shirt in the Rogcon segment spazzing out on those weird Music Games :). My roommate was Player 2 for beatmania IIDX but was barely on camera... but anyway, we had a blast chillin' with the TRS guys.

I feel kinda embarrassed, I didn't put it together that Alex is on Diggnation, and was on TechTV, until after I left Rogcon. Well, I guess it beats acting like a total fanboy on camera.

Now that we've had that opening, when are we going to get around to doing something with The Breakfast Club that isn't overly embarrasing like those damn JC Penny commercials (which, BTW, make me NEVER want to shop there AGAIN!)...?

All that said, sadly, I don't have much to say about this weeks episode. I skipped Tropic Thunder because I'm crazy-poor, and Braid really doesn't interest me. Weird?

I really don't think the guys should be playing the demos of games that they're reviewing as material. It's completely ludicrous. It's a bit like reviewing a movie based on a clip of a movie or a trailer. I'd like to see a real review of the game, thanks.

Dan falling for the jump joke was pretty hilarious though. Loved Dan and Jeff's take on Braid as it's definitely on par with mine. Really confused about Alex's though...

You're missing the whole point of the game. Yes, he is using that gameplay style to convey his message but that doesn't mean it's just a clone(there's thousands of mario clones if that's all you want). This game is more about trying to put how humans go over something traumatic in their head. It's literally a guy trying to piece together where he went wrong by way of mental gymnastics. The whole game is a work of art if just for that it shows that games can, and should be taken more seriously on an intellectual and spiritual level.

I just finished and... it's going to take me a while to digest this masterpiece.

As been said many times before (maybe we need to have a sticky "fashion" thread?) many shirts you will see on TRS are from http://shirt.woot.com but are only available there until the run sells out; here (http://shirt.woot.com/Friends.aspx?k=6281) is the shirt Jeff was wearing during the episode.

Hey guys, if you like Munchkin, check out Cutthroat Caverns:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28259

It has some similar screwage mechanics but it doesn't tend to drag out like Munchkin can. Plus the whole concept is awesome. You are a party of adventurers killing a series of monsters. The catch? Only the person who lands the killing blow gets the reward.

That's right, it's a board game about kill-stealing. Epic.

You guys gotta check it out. If you like Munchkin you'll love this.

I don't use the term ' FTW ' too often. As I don't play games much, but it's slowly creeping into my regular vocabulary.

I grew up in VA about the same time Alex did. Erol's video was great.
We looked suspiciously at Blockbuster when they started moving in.

You could also rent VCRs and Video cameras from Erol's. The guy was a genius of his time, but couldn't hold up against the juggernauts that moved in.

That's all, so Erol's, FTW.

I don't understand how being stuck in a spot in Braid for hours and being at your wits end is any less punishing than having a difficult time passing a section in Bionic Commando. Isn't success rewarding in both situations?

That depends on the cause of being stuck...if it's figuring out a way to do something, sure...but if it's because the controls are picky about which way you're pointing, it's not exactly rewarding so much as relief and hoping you don't die and have to do it again.

What evs. Where you see picky controls, I see deliberate level design. It's a relief to get past a tough spot in a game when the controls are bad. There are a lot of NES games that are guilty of that. In a game with such simple and specific controls as Bionic Commando, I find it rewarding to find the correct places to swing from. Discovering the perfect path through a level and nailing the timing of a swing can make a platformer almost puzzling.

I'm not sure it qualifies as deliberate level design to have the arm shoot up or out but only a small degree of angle gets you the diagonal. At first I thought I'd just been using the 360 controller for too long, but then noticed (and backed up by a couple reviews) that it was more the game controls.

Sounds like a game for roman catholics.

The lack of control while in the air makes a lot of old school games much more difficult than they otherwise would be. Think of how much easier Castlevania, Ghost and Goblins, and Bionic Commando would've been had the player been given air control. Who's to say if they would've been better games, though. I've still never finished Castlevania. Every once in a while I'll pop it in, and it's completely exhilarating whenever I get even a step closer to Dracula than I have before (I recently beat Igor and Frankenstein for the first time :)). If the game was remade and given more forgiving controls, I don't think it would be as fun.

As a gamer, I don't think you've changed so much as you've been pampered. Modern games have become so easy compared to what we grew up with. There's been so much emphasis on collection and exploration that challenge has been kicked aside. Can you remember the last time you died playing a platformer, or really any single player game that isn't a shmup? (off subject a bit here, but..."Skinnerian reward scheduling in general (which you see in most modern game design, MMOs being the canonical example) is unethical and games should not do it (Jonathan Blow)" But not having consequences for screwing up is totally okay. Just rewind time!) It just doesn't happen in modern games. I appreciate and love games that are easy on the thumbs, tough on the mind (Toki Tori is killing me right now), but I really miss those tough old 8bit games.

I wouldn't say they had "bad" controls. I would say necessarily unforgiving.

I'm not sure it qualifies as deliberate level design to have the arm shoot up or out but only a small degree of angle gets you the diagonal. At first I thought I'd just been using the 360 controller for too long, but then noticed (and backed up by a couple reviews) that it was more the game controls.

You shouldn't use the d-pad at all to shoot the arm diagonally. Once you realize that, it's much easier to navigate every level.

Braid segment:

Dan = YES!
Alex = NO!
Jeff = LOVE!

*rewind*

and Alex, Portal is definitely a puzzle game except it's in the first person mode.

...seriously? just hit the button?

yea, you can just use one button for the diagonal grapple. tutorial mode explains it all.

I third that MrPopular, Burn Notice is epic. I've watched it from the beginning and even emailed the guys to try it out. Just remember if you missed it on the tube and forgot to DVR-it you can watch full episodes on USA's website.

Back on track. OMG loved the intro, one of my wife's favority chick flicks. Can anyone get Dan a slow-me-down pill so he can finish one sentence/thought before moving on to another. He is like a nervous nelly. Still love the show I'm just sayin.

I'm curious as to why they passed on the Clone Wars review even though I didn't think it was up to par. Can't wait for Bionic commando but I look forward more to StarTrek online and Holy Sh$# did anyone see the DemiGod mmo/rpg trailer?

There's a game to review along with Afro Samuri, bullet time with a sword? Sweeeet.

Last but not least I want to know where you get all those off the wall shirts Jeff...C'mon give what's your secret. I love oddball shirts.

I know each week, they try to do an intro relevant to the movie that week.

Is there a particular connection between Sixteen Candles and Tropic Thunder? And I think the cake was lopsided :-)

I think the relevance of the opening was the birthday. Didn't they mention they were filming on Alex's?

So

I went back and watched a bunch of the intros after I saw that wikipedia list because I didn't want to wait until I saw ALLLL the episodes to see the intros.

The Spaceballs one rules.

Love the spaceballs one. And the beetlejuice one, and ep 52 of course. Waynes World one was damn good too.

Keep watching the eps though hoe.

That's not so.

well, I meant recently. Look back a few episodes. They try to do an intro that is relevant to the episode (I'm checking the Wiki, and it seems to go as far back as Episode 58)

Usually, the intro will be relevant to an actor, or a sequel, etc.

edit: finally got down to watch the episode. Incredibly sad that they all seemed to love Tropic Thunder. I was incredibly disappointed at this piece of garbage that was presented and hyped to me. I expected so much more and got so much less.

Dancing =/= funny. Ben Stiller must learn this, for he ended Dodgeball the same way.

The guy was a genius of his time, but couldn't hold up against the juggernauts that moved in.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erol's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erol%27s)

That's all, so Erol's, FTW.

-Wes

Ahh Erols...I am old enough to have pretended to be 18 to be able to rent their R-rated movies and beyond :) I even used them as my first post-AOL ISP. They may have been taken over by RCN, but I still have my erols email account. Ahh...memories.

I can't believe you jeff. Nothing but baseball works as a sports movie. i strongly disagree sir. How many bad football movies are there? Almost none. Why, because football is rad in itself. Soccer has also had a pretty good run of movies, so has hockey. even golf has Happy Gilmore and the greatest game ever played.

Yeah, I was clearly wrong there. But it felt right.... at the time. Turned out to be wrong... but felt right.
