So im at my room in a network and all computers have the same IP address. I want to setup a FTP server, but every time I try to push it online it says its unable to connect and points it to same address that all computers have here. I know so cause i've got to my friends rooms and asked if I could check what IP they have.

Is there anything I can do on my end at this computer only, change my IP or maybe I have something setup wrong. I've tried raidenftp and ServU, but both came back with the error "unable to connect."

Any help?

thanks

The question seems to be "Why doesn't may FTP server work?" (with no other detail).

What is the IP address that is the same for all the computer?

In a 'normal' network no computers can have the same IP address. If they did nothing would work for either of them.

What is the layout of the network?

Can you trace route or ping the other computer?

What operating systems are the computers running?

Did you check firewall settings?

Have you tried turning the firewall off?

Have you check that the server is running and allowing connections from all IP addresses?

all our ips point to 66.109.*.* the last two are the same for all computers. ive gone to three other computers in this privately owned dormitory and checked ipchicken.com for the ip and they've all got the same results.

were all in either XP or Vista, i havent tried to ping or trace route since we all have the same IP.

i've turned the firewall off. but still no luck.

thanks for the reply Boris hopefully we can figure something out.

Open up a command prompt and type:

c:\ipconfig

It will list something like -

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : nc.rr.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.10.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.10.1

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : nc.rr.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.10.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.16.10.1

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Those are my INTERNAL ip addresses on my laptop (fixed ethernet and wireless). ipchicken reports what your IP address is to the outside world (ie you routers WAN address), and means nothing for internal networking.

Question is - do yo want to access your FTP server from within the dorm networks, or from anywhere on the internet? And - will operating a server be a violation of the schools internet usage policy.

yea i want to be able to share files online with other people and also for when im at school to be able grab files when i need. i've asked admin, they said they wont mind as long as i dont share 100's of gigs, which i dont plan on doing.

i tried the local address 10.10.31.80 and obviously only i could connect.

anything else?
