Hi

Are there many Forum members from the UK? How about a chat about comics in the uk, best places to buy, fairs and con's etc looking forward to talking to everyone.

Hi, I'm in Glasgow. I'm afraid I usually get my comics from Forbidden Planet. The guys in there are really nice and they get pretty much every comic that's released so it's a bit of a no brainer really.

As for as comic cons go, there is one in Birmingham - www.thecomicsshow.co.uk - later this year with quite a good number of guests confirmed so far. Then there's one in Inverness - www.hi-ex.co.uk - early next year. And there's one in Bristol each year too.

Oh, and there's this one in Leeds: www.thoughtbubblefestival.com

There's a great new comic fair in Glasgow that happens twice a year. It's pretty small but you get comics for 30p and 50p. Next one is in September.

Hey, I'm from Glasgow too. I normally get my books from Forbidden Planet too, but I sometimes go to a great warehouse called Red Hot Comics. They do awesome deals on ebay, you should check out their store. They're great for back issues and specific orders too. I don't always go to them because they're a bit outside the city centre and it takes time to travel there, but when I've got time I like to go there more than FB.

I'll be at the Comic Fair on September 6th. Should be good (I hope).

I wonder if any more UK members of the ifanbase are lurking about the forums...

Deadspace, up for another pint sometime soon? Might even see you tomorrow, if you're heading to the store.

Well well looks like the Glasgow boys are keen comic book readers.

I am from Glasgow too, I buy most comics online, Pick up some at A1 in saltmarket and some in forbidden Planet. A meet for a pint might be a good idea, what do you guys think.

Ha! All from glasgow, that's cool :D

@wellthatsalright - yeah im up for a drink. i'm going into town today for my one solitary comic that i'm picking up this week lol... catch me on msn...?

@sonic-attack - it's "glasgow boys (plus girl)" ;-)

maybe we should see how many glasgow folk want to meet up for a weekly comic errr 'group' or something. or is that just too sad?

sonic-attack
08-21-2008, 03:43 PM
I think a meet would be good (i'm sad), would be good to find some other sad people to get involved.

Are you going to the comic fair in Byres road in September?

wellthatsalright
08-21-2008, 04:21 PM
Sounds good. I slept in today and I have a bit of a hangover... so I've skipped picking up my books today. I'll be through tomorrow, but it's just a quick trip to the store and I'm back home I'm afraid.

Yeah, a meet up would be good. Let's hope some more people add to the thread.

I'll be there for the fair. I think deadspace is going too.

Yeah I'm going to the comic fair in September. Were you at the last one? There was one guy who bought £42 worth of comics - which is a lot when you consider most were 30p each :D

We'll consider it, ;).

Until recently, I was hoping to go to the comic show in Birmingham, but I decided to study for another year. I just keep telling myself, "one year left" and I get through the day.

I'm kinda (very) excited over plans to go to San Diego next Summer.

is it cos we have all the best comic writers?

@wellthatsalright - how solid are your plans for SDCC? I wanna go but I dunno if I'll be able to afford it. I've already talked a friend into coming with me - it didn't take much - she was just excited at the prospect of going to California lol but I'd feel bad dragging her around the con cos she really wouldn't be interested :/

DMZ - really great stuff.

Oh did any of you Glasgow people go to Collectormania at Braehead this week end? That's where I picked up the DMZ trade (for a fiver) and they had several boxes of comics for 50p - all kinds of stuff from old to new. They even had #7 and #8 of The Watchmen for 50p each. I also got #1 of Stray Bullets for 50p which was a nice find. And David Prowse was there, hehe.

Hi

"I wanna try walking dead but im not a zombie fan ?"

Walking dead has zombies, but its mostly a story about the living survivors and how they cope in very different world. You should give it a go pick up the first trade and see how you like it.

You said you picked up Watchmen, I have been trying to get through it have restarted 3 times now but it just wont keep me reading for some reason.
I would be interested to hear if you like it.

mrcola
08-25-2008, 11:30 AM
Thanks for the heads up about walking dead I will have to give it a go soon. Although my Local store is in Cardiff which is an hour away but theres always the net :)

And yeah I will let you know how I deal with watchmen I keep hearing either you love it or its too Heavy going.

Sharkey, your in Dublin, is ther any comic cons on soon?

Wow, this thread is becoming a lot more active since I was saw it :).

Glad to hear you picked up DMZ @Deadspace. I get paid at the end of the week, we should have another comic book day in 13th Note next week (that's if you're not too busy ;) )

House of M and Walking Dead are great reads. I managed to catch up on Walking Dead on trades and then hop onto monthlys and I haven't regretted it on bit. Anything else you're looking into reading @sonic-attack?

Batman - Year One and the Sinestro Corps. story line in GL are both awesome stories. I'm still running through my annual read of Watchmen, loving it all over again. I still haven't regretted getting the Absolute edition. How're you finding Watchmen @mrcola?

The guys in Ireland seem to be having better cons then the Scottish. Better stout, better weather and better cons... I wish I was Irish now :(. That last con sounds really good though.

The Stout is the best thing about Dublin.... I'm recovering from a hard night drinking as I write this. Sitting on my girlfriend's couch with a stack of reads beside me, just started my holidays and I have nothing to do for the first week so I have decided to chip away at my stack I have
The first Age of Bronze trade
The new HC Killing Joke
The first Strangehaven trade
Birds of Prey of Like Minds
Green Lantern Sinestro Corp book 2
Berlin City of Stone
Hate: Buddy does Jersey
DMZ Public Works
The Complete Peanuts 1959 - 1960
and it looks like it's gonna rain (not a bad way to spend the day).

Have you ever been to red hot comics in Castlemilk? I went at the weekend for the first time, its in a unit on an industrial estate, good selection of back issues and new stuff. He runs a subscription list and an ebay shop and offers good discounts. you should take a look.

Yeah! I mentioned them at the beginning of the thread. Ivor's a great guy. I just wish I could go there more often, but it's a fair trek out from the city centre (by car or by bus).

I might start going to him again once I go back to uni next month.

In my stack, I have...

Strangers In Paradise Pocket Book 2
Watchmen Absolute Edition
Spiderman: Blue
Batman: Hush Returns

My God, I love SiP.

What are you reading right now? In fact, if you read monthlys, list your 5 favourites.

1. Captain America
2. Echo
3. Walking Dead
4. Green Lantern
5. House of Mystery

(in no real order)

My top 5:

1. Final Crisis
2. Batman
3. Amazing Spiderman
4. Action Comics

I would add Gemini to that but its no where near monthly

But i buy a lot of comics, more than i can afford at the moment

I had that problem a few weeks back. I've cut down what I'm reading by quite a bit and once a few arcs have finished on certain titles I'll be dropping them too. I mean, some of the books I'm reading are enjoyable, but there's enjoyable and good writing and I like both when it comes to my comic books.

mrcola
08-25-2008, 03:47 PM
thats so weird im listening to the around comics podcast about jsa and I was thinking about adding it to my list.

Have you read any and what your take on them ?

I would add final crisis but its too far along now im guessing , and anways ive got a ton of crisis event books to read at the moment :)

wellthatsalright
08-25-2008, 03:51 PM
I've read it from the beginning and I really like the writing and the art. It's one of my favourite books for sure. I'd definitely recommend the first trade if you want to get into it. The storyline right now always seems to end on some cliff-hanger. I wish it was weekly :(

I dunno, I think Final Crisis would be easy enough to jump on to (from the beginning, if you're up for getting back issues) if you're reading the tie-ins.

mrcola
08-25-2008, 03:54 PM

2. Dead Space (one more issue to go :( )
3. House of Mystery

and it kinda gets hard here because there are a few that have just started but look really really promising like I Kill Giants, War Heroes, Golly!, Welcome To Hoxford. Hmmm... actually...

4. Fell
5. Criminal or Kick-Ass. Probably Criminal.

Fell and Kick-Ass of course use the "monthly" term very loosely!

The DC and Marvel universes can kiss my ass... :D

How much does he sell the back issues for?

The stall at Collectormania had back issues for 50p but it sucked in a way cos it would only have a few spaced out issues like #7, #15 and #31 of a series - so it's good if you are missing an issue but not good if you are wanting a whole arc or series. That's what the comic fair at Hillhead is like too. Though I did manage to get full arcs of some Thundercats stuff last time.

You really can't go wrong with Action Comics and Superman at the moment. Johns and Robinson are starting a really big story for the next 2 years. But the writing and art and solid. Especially Gary Franks work, he draws Superman like Christopher Reeves.

Robin's really good as well at the moment, really easy to jump on to.

JLA is ok at the moment, but not amazing really, I'm thinking of switching over to JSA.

I'm not reading GL but i've heard really good things about it.

Why bother going into Dublin every month for a book that I'll read in 15 minutes for 4 euro when I can get a Trade in a book store not to far from my home for around 15 euro or less. Besides they sell magazines in the newsagents with reprinted stories for the same price as a single monthly. Planet Hulk started this month in Mighty World Of Marvel. I'm quite happy sticking to my trades and reprints mainly cuz they're cheaper.

There as two cons last summer one with the artist from Y and another with Millar, Lee, Pacheco and a bunch of others. I didn't go to the one with Pia. I'm with you on not buying monthly comics I just don't want to have to go into dublin every week to get a part of a story. I did my whole monthly thing years ago when Wow comics (the best comic shop ever) was still around and now I just go to book stores or order trades online.

I'd say you should try Spiderman (the new ones as I'm reading them and I think there a blast) or maybe the Bendis run on Daredevil. Yes Mr BoneMachine you have found me out I do like a bit of DC but would love to branch out as my Preacher , Punisher and Captain America do show. And any suggestions would be welcome im a newbie with a bit of spare cash :)

I havent read Ifinite Crisis yet , but for the same reason is why I bougth Omac because it includes Countdown , but as soon as I get around to it I would love to tell you what I thought :)

By my keen detective skills, I'm deducing that your quite the DC fan Mr. Cola?
I see you have Inifinite Crisis. Is it any good? I bought it yesterday and I'm reading some other stuff before I get round to it. Is it confusing to someone who hasn't read Countdown to Infinite Crisis and all that?

I've read infinite Crisis and hadn't read any of the countdown books that came before it. I didn't find it confusing in the least, you pick up anything you need to know as you go. I suppose it's a bit like reading the first Crisis, sure some of the carathers are are unknown to you but that's half the fun.

I would happily recommend The first trades of either The Walking Dead, Y The Last Man or The Ultimates. Bryan Hitch's art on The Ultimates is incredible and I love Millar's writing too.

Cool, there is nothing like the feeling of finding something you have put the time into finding. I never read all of a lonley place of dying. I read the first issue back in about 92 but I can't remember it at all. Is it any good? It follows on from the death of Jason Todd, right?

My memory is rubbish, I just googled it and now I remember hearing about it on the show. I seem to remember liking it at the time (mind I only read one issue) but not as much as the Alan Grant Bat that I was reading (probably unlike most comic readers I started reading comics through a guy selling second hand comics in a market so I could buy a few 80's batman comics and early 90's bat in one go)

Im starting to collect monthlys this month with Green Lantern #34 , I will probably have to search for the back issues too , but by what you say this storyline sounds fun.

Oh and I cant remember who asked about reading watchmen , I for some reason have tried three times and have only got to chapter two. But I managed to breeze through Sinestro corps , Green Arrow Year one and Batman Year One in no time :)

The secrest origin story is great, apparently Johns is setting up big things for the future of Green Lantern. You should try and pick up the earlier issues of the secret origin arc I think they start at no29 you wont regreat it. :)

Ps @sonic-attack So whats your take on Kick Ass ?

Overall I like it..It's not without fault but if you take it as a comic romp and a bit tongue in cheek its great Romita's art is fantastic and fits the book so well, Millars writing is a bit weak at times and there is very little plot on show so far, but the characters are great, Hit Girl the 10 year old ninja is superb.

I would recommend. There is a catch up edition i think it covers the first 3 issues comming out, or is out already, so if you can grab issue 4 and the catch up your up to date.

As a Millar dicipile, I badly want Kick-Ass but the way it's being released Ireland will have won the world cup by the time the trade comes out. It's the one comic I'd be willing to buy in single issue form, as the wait for trades is ridiculous!

At the risk of threadomancy, I'm also from Cambridge.

My local store is a Forbidden Planet (it's about five minutes walk from where I work) which I use mostly for finding new stuff by browsing the spines and seeing what pops out, but I also get a few trades off Amazon if I know what I'm after.

I've never really bought monthlies and never really delved into the longer continuities, but I have been catching up on Green Lantern (after someone pointed me at :Rebirth) and Batman lately.

I just got done with Batman RIP (quite bewildering for someone who's only followed the occaisional arc) and am probably going to have to move on to Final Crisis and Battle For The Cowl. I'm also reading the Prelude to the Darkest Night...

Oh, and I can't help it... I am looking forward to the new Power Girl series... Sorry :P

Hello chaps (too old school British?). I'm in Staffordshire. Been listening to Ifanboy for...ever, it seems. Those guys crack me up. I went to the Birmingham con in '07. My first one. It was o.k., a little cramped though. Seems like they tried to get too much into the space. Met some nice folks though.

I usualy get my comics, trades actually, from Page 45 in Nottingham, which is an awsome shop or from Forbidden Planet either in Derby or Nottingham. My First comic book shop was Nostalgia and Comics in Birmingham. I discovered it when I was about sixteen, which was twenty eight years ago (don't add that up). I thought I had stumbled on comic heaven. Used to go there once a month. Ah, those where the days.

Just spent ages reading this topic after the title caught my eye. I also come from Glasgow, and have a few questions for fellow city-dwellers. I know you have all heard of DCBS; is there anything comparable to that in the UK? I have seen several sites, including Mega City Comics and Heroes Assemble, while google-ing, and was wondering if anyone has used their services. I am a new comic-addicted convert, and am slowly seeing my bank balance suffer more each week! Also, if you could let me know if the comic shops here offer some kind of pull service that could possibly help me out in this department...Thanks!

Forbidden Planet (http://www.forbidden-planet.co.uk/) give you a bit of a discount if you advance order online. They also do subscriptions online and you can give them your pull list instore too I believe (I've seen people go in and collect a big pile of comics that have already been picked out for them). Best bet is probably to just go in and ask them about it.

Thank you; the website looks great. I will ask to see if I can pick it up in store. It would be handy if I could go in once a month with a guarantee that the books I want are still available. By the way, do you know of any cons or fairs in the Glasgow area? I wish I could go to the Leeds con, but I work on Saturdays...

Hey guys, I live just outside london and buy all my graphic novels from Forbidden planet. I only got into graphic novels/comics last year and wondering why I didn't read them sooner..
My current collection is: watchmen, v for vendetta, wanted, the dark knight returns, pride of baghdad, the killing joke, first 3 preacher editions, 1st absolute edition the sandman, 1-6 of kick ass and all of the Y:the last man. Already spent far too much :-)
wondering what you think and if you have any suggestions maybe?
