It is interesting to see what computers people are discarding now. Pentium III computers are being dumped more frequently.. I picked up a case(no ps, drives or memory) with a pIII slot one mb in it this weekend. fortunately I had spare parts from the macs I discarded. I can not wait for the p4 class machines to be dumped. Though they will be scarfed up pretty quickly for a while.

Yeah, it's kind of sad. I've scooped up a couple of P3's just over 1Ghz just to play around with and "Ubuntuize" them. Throw in a decent video card and they'll be a perfect open-source internet/productivity box for someone.

Most of the p3's I get are under 1 ghz, I did manage to scarf up one p4 mb with a 1.7 ghz cpu and no ram.
Happy scavenging.

My job has me sometimes helping low-income people. Most of them could really use an old P3 box, so they could get on the internet for job searches, writing resumes and cover letters, taking free online courses, email, etc., but NONE of them have computers. So if they are computer literate, they have to walk or take buses to the computers at the library.

I tell them that they can get a P3 box for $20-$30 (or free) off of Craigslist and cheap NetZero-style internet, but they never do. Funny thing is they almost always have money for $4 packs of cigarettes.

That's for sure. I am thinking of giving a bunch of computers to an ex girlfriend's school that she teaches at. They would love to have them I am sure. Just have to get my better half to think it was her idea. Old girfriends get you into so much trouble without you ever knowing why.

You could always use one to start producing electricity.

You could always use one to start producing electricity.Could you place a speaker inside that converts the noise of the computer, and turns it into electricity to drive the computer?

OMG!!!! Perpetual energy!

Patent pending: a speaker inside that converts the noise of the computer, and turns it into electricity to drive the computer.

Let's see how many times did it take to make the light bulb work? I would love to interview Thomas Edison Everyone thought that was impossible also.

I have all of the sudden been getting p3's now for free. I would not mind getting some p4 even if they were single core real cheap to set up a dimdim server.
