So in the latest episode Dan had mentioned that Civ4 had the best song from a game ever, Boba Yetu (spelling?), So I was wondering what others thought to be the best video game soundtracks they have ever heard. EXCLUDING music games, no Guitar Hero, Rock Band, DDR or any other music specific game.

My top 3 soundtracks in no particular order.

1. Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
2. Gothic 3
3. Super Metroid

1 and 2 are some of the best, most well composed orchestral music ive ever heard in a game. And number 3 is some fantastic and somtimes spooky electronic music. Lets hear your thoughts!

1. Super Metroid (Prime games have some fantastic music as well)
2. Killer Instinct
3. The Legend of Zelda series

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of my favorites.
You also can't go wrong with the Final Fantasy stuff.

I really enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus' soundtrack. Just made the game feel much more epic.

The score to BioShock is absolutely epic. I will never forget the first moment you lay eyes on Rapture, the music accompanying that event makes it one of my all time favorite gaming moments.

Mass Effect also has a phenomenal score. It serves as perfect background music for that game as well as a spectacular homage to Blade Runner

Are you surprised I posted it..nah, but just few samples of hundreds (seriously hundreds upon hundreds) of amazing music.

I know 4 samples may seem a bit much but please listen to each.

I swear on everything I hold dear you won't be disappointed. :)

I thought Chris Tilton wrote a really great, cinematic score for "Black". Jesper Kydd's score for "Freedom Fighters" was on the money, too.

Without a doubt Grim Fandango - the best game ever made - also has the best soundtrack ever. You can download the entire soundtrack here:

http://www.grimfandango.net/?page=soundtrack

Here's a sample:

Track 1 - Casino Calavera (http://www.grimfandango.net/files/soundtrack/01%20-%20Casino%20Calavera.mp3)
Track 2 - Smooth Hector (http://www.grimfandango.net/files/soundtrack/03%20-%20Smooth%20Hector.mp3)
Track 5 - Hector Steps Out (http://www.grimfandango.net/files/soundtrack/05%20-%20Hector%20Steps%20Out.mp3)

While most of the music in Ico is fairly ambient, I will say that the opening waltz is one of the most gorgeous pieces of music I've heard:

Castles in the Mist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d8DBaaRqUg)

We nearly used as entrance music for our wedding but just used it as background music during the reception instead :)

Beyond Good & Evil also has a great soundtrack, lots of world/house/dub style music and other interesting stuff:

Funky Akuda Bar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7Kj60C4aJs&feature=related)
Chinese Boutique (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2KbIzT2D4Y&feature=related)

1. The God of War series, I think has some really epic musical parts.
2. BioShock's soundtrack definitely helps set the tone and atmosphere of the game.
3. Final Fantasy games always have some highlights one of my favorites is the song that plays in the opening cinematic.
4. The original music for Kingdom Hearts I can listen to a lot.
5. I heard the song Dan mentioned at Video Games Live and it was awesome.
6. I could keep going cause I love video game soundtracks and try to collect as many as I can.

Games have so many talented composers.

One of the reasons Babe Yetu stands above other is that it can stand all by itself outside of the game (I have it in my standard rotation of songs). The best game songs out there are those that can stand alone independent of the game.

I loved the Jazz feel of Grim Fandango...

Its pretty hard to find an entire soundtack that rules outside of a Final Fantasy or Castlevania game.

Alot of times I get a soundtrack for a single song. I have a million examples of that.

I gotta say some Final Fantasy soundtracks are kind of repetitive. I don't care for VII that much. However, I will say I think the Advent Children soundtrack is far superior and is how the music should be redone if there were to ever be a game remake.

I beg of you two listen to those 4 songs I posted on the first page.
Shenmue is written by many composers that are some of the most talented in the business and worked on so many songs in gaming most people have grown up with and famous games/soundtracks.

Also Suikoden,Xenosaga,.hack,Grandia II,Skies of Arcadia..could go on forever but so many have amazing music.

Where is STREETS OF RAGE in these lists people?!? For real, this is probably my greatest soundtrack of all time. The whole thing is this hip, "Soul II Soul" meets Metropolitan style...you can really tell it was the ONLY soundtrack the game could have ever had. Youtube has clips...listen to the opening theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzKWc5DDAls) and re-live the whole game through the other links. Superb.

Tell me you don't think of that Ultimate Warrior dude when you hear the theme from the beach level. :)

Also, major shout out to the Toejam and Earl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igM28975maY) soundtrack for simply being so much fun, and so much FUNK!

Lastly, on the "epic" side, Halo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VQPFpIjz18) and Diablo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8) are among some nostalgic faves.

Zelda has been mentioned, but I thought I'd specifically mention Twilight Princess because I loved a lot of those songs so much.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

I don't know if I'd personally acknowledge a lot of Star Wars games' music. As much as I do like that game and should go back and finish. A lot of the games just reuse John Williams' pieces from the movies.

But I could be wrong, thinking back the Shadows of the Empire and the annoying train level had a pretty good song playing.

I wanted to say that I think Mega Man deserves a spot on this thread. I've heard some remixes and covers that are great. Minibosses covered most of Mega Man 2's music.

All Star Wars games have good music IMO because they take from John Williams' score and just adapt it. There is so much quality orchestra music from the star wars universe floating around that it's impossible to be bad. The music is iconic and always very grand, which fits the scale of what's going on really well. There's nothing like using your lightsaber with overtures int he backround.

I'm not a Metal Gear fan, but the music in MGS4, from the title screen on, was pretty epic to me.

I also have a special place in my heart for that music in the towns in ActRaiser. Check out this remake: http://www.metroidmetal.com/metroid_mp3/Stemage-chunkstyle-Actraiser-Teddy%27sBread.mp3

I also loved the music in Metroid games, specifically Metroid Prime series.

And the music of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest during the battles, that heavy metal... That was awesome, back in the day.

I'm not bashing the Star Wars music. I own some of the soundtracks as well as a cassette of Shadow of the Empire soundtrack. My bigger grief is how much of the music is recycled often into so many games. I just feel it starts to lose its grandness when it is looped or part of a Children's game with very little substance. I think I started muting Lego Star Wars often when I would replay the game. Some times they place the music well into a game and it works, but sometimes it does fail IMO.

@CucumberBoy You may be right it has been awhile since I've played KOTOR, but I just recall most of my experiences playing a Star Wars game.

Although I am curious to play the Force Unleashed demo to check it out, and play the full game. I just think the Star Wars soundtrack is probably one of the most recycled ones, but a good one to be used.

Yeah, sometimes the original score is used in the wrong places; and that can get annoying. Although at times it does work. Republic Commando did a good job. I belive the music was well qued in that game. However, it's unfortunate that almost none of the games have a real orchestra performing the music. As the music geek I am, that bugs me.

I grew up with Final Fantasy VII, so every song on that game in my opinion is great.

Bioshock's soundtrack I also loved. It may not all have been original music but they weren't suppose to be and the songs they picked fit the game and it's mood so very well.

And lastly, I didn't see anyone metion it yet, I love all the songs that accompany Nintendo games and the game that has the biggest collection of these is Super Smash Bros: Brawl. It has hundreds of awesome tracks from dozens of their games, and it stands out in my mind as the best soundtrack in a video game yet.

I'm lovin the 'Still Alive' songs from both Portal and Mirror's Edge. They are just so unique (for me).
PORTAL - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=270749989&id=270749981&s=143441
MIRROR'S EDGE - http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=293761372&id=293761302&s=143441

Also, another one I love is all the music in the Xbox Live Arcade game Castle Crashers becuase it used all user-created music found on their own website 'www.newgrounds.com'. They have a list here : http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/castlecrashers.html

Also I know the post looks ugly; I hate using BBcode.
And I know ITunes sucks.

I am a big fan of Jeromy Soule (http://www.jeremysoule.com/), who has done many game soundtracks, most of which are available to Direct Song (http://www.Directsong.com). Of these, I think the original Guild Wars and Morrowind are my favorites.

Also :

Homeworld
Braid
and "To Zanarkand" from FF X

Super Mario Galaxy and Gears of War 2 are my favorites right now.

Super Mario Galaxy utilizes some of my favorite themes from Super Mario Bros. 3 and makes them even more beautiful.

Gears just invokes so many different emotions and is so grand, like a films score.

Mirror's Edge.

Though, like a lot of great movie soundtracks, I'd never listen to it other than during gameplay. With the exception of the main theme.

It'd be like listening to the The Dark Knight soundtrack. It's all ambient and heightens a context, but doesn't substitute for one.

The opening theme to Final Fantasy VIII.

I saw it performed @ Video Games Live. They don't have the rights to play Square video so they didn't have video playing. I could still imagine the opening cut scene while listening to it.

I put GTA Vice City in yesterday, just to listen to the radio, while cleaning my living room. I've ofter played the GTA MSX, ( both the GTA3 version and the Liberty City Stories version ) entire show streams, from youtube while doing other stuff online.

I've considered recording the stations from the games onto a computer before. I have the official soundtracks for Vice City and San Andreas, but some of the songs and such weren't licensed for that.

Don't know which radio station you like, so I'm not providing a link, but search youtube, they are mostly all on there.

OK, so here's some nice MSX. It's a specific taste.

HAH! Comment from youtube in regards to the last vid, GTA3 MSX;

"I downloaded all 3 parts, put it on my Xbox 360 hard drive and used it as a custom soundtrack for GTA 4.

Fucking awesome :)

Beats the shit out of 'Electro Choc' XD"

What do you mean? Some of the songs in the game, aren't on the cd ? I love that Patsy Cline '2 cigs in the ashtray' song on KROSE.

BTW, I think we've talked about it before, but you have played through LCS and VCS haven't you ?

right. Some of the songs were only able to be licensed for the game, not for soundtrack...not sure if any were just not attempted.

Yep...I was bitching about VCS when I was picked it up again to finish it.

I remember that, thought that was you. I don't have 100% on any gta game, (98.89% on SanAndreas, only have the last mission to do, I've done it before but used cheats on that save file, and am recording all the missions to play as a movie ), but am close. I loved the stories for VCS and LCS ( both the female deaths in those, stunned me, especially in VCS - I was sad as hell about her ).

I'm trying to record The Warriors as a movie/story and it's damn hard. That game is almost too good and too deep, such variety of levels and missions and things to do - whew!

Only one I got to 100% on was GTA IV. Of course, that was pre-trophies on PS3, so I'll never get that one. Killing the flying rats took forever too...and I needed to use a guide, even with the maps you can get in the game.

Alot of the sidemissions bug me, ( racing in San Andreas especially... too much!), but some days I'll turn it on, and just focus on one thing, and get it done. I'll real big on collecting as many of the collection things as possible, early on, so that I have weapons to take into missions. I've had trouble with the Avenging Anels missions in LCS and haven't tried since.

I bought the CE of Wrath of the Lich King. The score that comes with that is really awesome. Also the Music from SWG was awesome as well I used to leave looping macro's running all hours of the night just to hear the music in that game.

I am very surprised few people mentioned Castlevania: SotN...my personal favorite.. some other classic soundtracks areee:

2nd: Final Fantasy IV - The reason I like RPG's today...the music was magical, intruiging, beautiful, even the more aggresive works were enchanting. If I go to heaven, I think this will be on.

3rd: Megaman 2 - I played this in 1st grade on Christmas all day and said fuck my family. For it's time, could be the best soundtrack ever, but only for its time. The limited NES bleeps and beeps for all their music don't even seem to be here, they made these bleeps into really awesome stuff. BTW, ANY megaman could be on here this is simply my fave. (X is second tho)

4th: Super Metroid - I've played this game so many times I'm not gonna talk about it or it's music. You already know its amazing.

5th: Final Fantasy VI - Some say its overrated...some say its the best, I'm not really sure myself, but I remember this game being perfect the first time I played it. The World Map Theme in both Light/Dark worlds were unbelievable for being on the SNES. The Atma Weapon Battle Music is one bad ass song. I couldn't decide to put this or FFVII in number 5 slot, but the nostalgia i have for this game trumps.

Honorable mentions..... FFVII, Metroid Prime series, Resident Evil 1 & 2, Chrono Trigger/Cross

most greatest mega man mix i think goes to this person
