Discuss generals like Patton, Clark, Mills, Stonewall Jackson, Hannibal, Pompey, and Tiberius.

Or whatever.

Ouch. Not a great way to get your name into the title of a thread.

On topic: After reading Jeff Shara's amazing book To the Last Man (http://www.amazon.com/Last-Man-Novel-First-World/dp/0345461363/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219962514&sr=8-3), I have a deep appreciation for John "Black Jack" Pershing.

On a weird related note: My sister is dating a relative of the great Stonewall Jackson. His name is Jack...short for, you guessed it, Jackson. Are your minds blown? :)

Erwin Rommel from World War II you mean.

Maybe he means the actual tactician from the movie.

You know, the dramaturgue?

yes! thank you. he was a nazi right?

If my history is correct, he was a famous Nazi general, famous for his construction and execution of blitzkrieg that overtook most of Europe. After conquering that, he was sent to the African front, where a lack of support from Germany and an ever mounting Allied force caused heavy casualties to his men and tanks. Rommel was also the commanding general of the Northern France border, and it was his defenses that we met during D-Day. Before you discount this fact, know that Rommel was again under supported and understaffed to effectively hold the beaches.

I really reccommend reading Jeff Shara's The Rising Tide (http://www.amazon.com/Rising-Tide-Novel-World-War/dp/0345461371/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220011375&sr=8-2) and The Steel Wave (http://www.amazon.com/Steel-Wave-Novel-World-War/dp/0345461428/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220011375&sr=8-1) as they both really provide a great account of the Allies battles with Rommel and how the pendulum could have swung had things been done differently. Its incredibly good reads.

I have decided something today, and although nobody should care about it, I'm going to come and proclaim it here: aside from those boards on iFanboy.com and the iFanboy Rev 3 Forum, I hereby pledge to never read another online comment board again.

Primarily, I'm referring to the "Comment" sections after reading just about any article online. It just seems to me that 90% of the people posting in those spots are angry, flaming... angry flamers who have very little to spew but illogical hate. Why does this happen? I hope that it's not the anonymity factor that lets people feel they can get away with this (although I'm afraid that at least in some cases it is). I just can't imagine anyone I know or love going online and spewing bile like you find in those comment sections.

I once e-mailed a sports columnist about the level of racism left in the comment boards after his column (it was about the Mets, as some people seemed on the comments decided to express their opinion that there are too many Hispanic players on the Mets, only they were not quite so genteel about it.) I asked the columnist if something should be done about it, and he wrote back that he'd ask the webmaster but that he didn't read the comments himself as they were generally so hateful and angry. Months later, I'm taking up his practice. Today I read a perfectly innocuous column about George Clooney and Brad Pitt promoting their Coen Bros. film in Europe, and having fun with the reporters. Many of the commenters afterwards really decided they needed to take this opportunity TO TELL EVERYONE HOW MUCH THEY HATE GEORGE CLOONEY AND BRAD PITT AS HUMAN BEINGS?!

Why? For what purpose? Why carry that much anger around towards someone you don't even know who has never done anything to personally harm you?

There is no intellectual reason for me to read comment boards anymore, so... rather than waste my time, I'm simply not going to do it.

This only makes me appreciate so much more what the iFanboys have managed to establish here: an online community that is largely free from pointless sniping and ugly hatefulness. Good job, gentelemen. This is my online comment home.

Anyone read the Scott McCloud web comic (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/index.html) about the new Google browser?

I did, was a really interesting way to announce it. It also explained some stuff I'd always wondered about the memory leaking in Firefox.

A little bummed it's using Webkit which means I'll have to support that engine even more but that's for selfish reasons.

As far as this "general" discussion goes, I think that Grant and Sherman were among the two greatest generals in American history. And I say this as a true-blue Virginian.

This is a bit random to I'm posting in here.

I just bought a comic off Wowio. Except I didn't really buy it because when you sign up, EA Sports (ugh) tell you they are giving you a comic as a gift.

So I now own a digital copy of Heather Reilly. And it looks quite good.

True story.

we talked about movies for a long...long time

i just wanted to say that if you guys have a chance, it would be great if you can come down. it would be great meeting some of you guys. it's a fantastic time and a small little get together every other friday.
