Ok, so I had a very interesting family Thanksgiving this year.

It started off fine. It was just my sister, her friend, my parents and me. Then my stepsister came over... with her fiance... and her boyfriend. Now I have to tell you some backstory here. My stepsis is what most people would call "socially retarded". She is the type of geek that thinks LARPing is the highest form of social interaction. Her fiance is in the same boat... stereo-typical D&D playing, dragon shirt wearing, not bathing or brushing his teeth dork. And now they have a "boyfriend". The whole situation was... strange to say the least. Then it got weirder when stepsis decided to start talking about how she wanted to start her own art publication. Which sounds fine until we found out it was Furry Art. (Look it up in Wiki if you don't know what that is) And all of this was being talked about during dinner.

I don't want to come off as geek bashing though. Because I am the biggest geek I know... or else why would I make this my third home? But there are just some people that cross that line and go from geeky to just creepy. And those are the people that make me feel bad for being a geek.

Anyway. Did any of you guys have some awkward family interactions this Thanksgiving?

not this year, but a few years ago, my aunt brought her girlfriend and her girlfriend's daughter over... at the time it was no big deal... until her girlfriend had a bipolar episode... she went all crazy and was throwing shit around my house and screaming at her daughter and then screaming at my aunt and physically attacking my aunt... it was really scary.... needless to say, my aunt broke up with her that day, kicked her ass out of my house, and hasnt heard from her since...

and there was also when i turned vegetarian, a week before thanksgiving... as someone who used to be an almost complete carnivore, it was terrible... all i ate was green bean casserole and bread...

When's the street date on that publication and do they offer subscriptions?

Thanksgiving is very MEH for me because im the only vegan within my family, cousins, aunts and uncles. So either i bring over some Tofurky or eat a lot of vegetables.

And the same thing happens when i go over my girlfriends for desert, they all give me the stink eye because i dont eat any of the deserts.

As much as I enjoy *most* vegetarian cooking, people making tofu or other soy products and forming them into meat substitutes is just wrong. If you want or need steak or turkey - go eat a damn steak or slice of turkey.

A good friend who has been vegetarian for as long as I have know him (about 16 years now), just gets pissed off because people's idea of vegetarian food is a "green salad". Vegetarians eat more than just lettuce and carrots.

To be honest, I have a grill plate on my BBQ I reserve for cooking food for my vegetarian friends. They appreciate the gesture, and the fact I don't mix my utensiles - keeping vege and meat tongs seperate.

Thanksgiving horror stories?? Nothing special, but after the efforts we went though a couple of years bake baking a turkey in an oven bag ... we won't be doing that again, and have stuck to doing a baked ham. Apart from the size of my family when we all get together, we are pretty normal and well adjusted - no animosity at all, which pretty much means no horror stories.

you are a scholar and a gentleman.

and i agree... most fake meat is crap. fake breaded chick'n is OK, but most of the rest of the stuff is garbage. if you want veggie burgers, get the ones that taste like portabella mushrooms, not the ones that pretend to be meat.

Fake meat is so gross and such a poor substitute, also see a vegan article i just posted, its a long read but very good. its eye opening.

I have no horros stories since I don't celebrate Thanksgiving. But it sure is fun to read about a stepsis bringing over both her lovers and talking about furry-art publication!

no, i didnt forget you satori, but you're an ex-veggie.Even confirmed omnivores can enjoy good vegetarian. After all, what goes better with a grilled steak than garlic mashed potatoes, portabella mushrooms, and green beans or asparagus, and if yo are vegetarian, ditch the steak and add an extra grilled portabella (peeled, doused with balsamic vinegar, and a pat of butter ... grill cap side down until the butter starts to melt, flip over so that the melted butter and vinegar steam under the shroom ... good eats even if you aren't a vegan).
