I think everyone remembers their first time solving a cube.

I'm known in my family as the "smart one". So I get a lot of puzzles and books as gifts. I got a Rubik's Revenge cube (4x4x4 cube) on Christmas a few years ago, my mom thought that I could just solve it on the spot. That was my first time with a cube, and it was a "REVENGE". it felt hopeless. I told everyone "as soon as I solve a standard one, then well talk"

Next Christmas I got a standard cube, I didn't solve it on the spot, but I did the next day. It was pretty sweet and a proud moment. But there stood the Revenge on the shelf much larger than the standard cube (that thing was intimidating). I got close several times, but came across the problem with the centers. They can move around which means you have to make sure they are properly oriented for the edges and corners.

A friend of mine picked up the Revenge after I had gotten really close and mixed it all up. I told him I probably would never be able to solve it anyway. so he tried to solve it. In his mind that meant to "do enough random moves it's bound to happen" he threw it to me severely mixed up from its previous state. Which was a little depressing. I played with it while we were talking and watching TV, I wasn't really focusing on solving it and didn't even expect to get close. After about 40 minutes I yell out "oh my god!" he looks over, 2 more turns and it was solved. It was epic to solve it, but in front of someone made it even better. I left it on a shelf solved for a few months as a trophy. then my friend mixed it up again... haven't done it since.

So do you remember your first Cube?

I remember my first one (in fact, I think I still have it around here somewhere), but I never had the patience to really solve it. I just pulled the pieces off and put them back on in the right places.

Never solved it, mainly just never cared enough to really try.
Had two or three in our house.

Same here. The most I got was one or two sides, then I'd break it apart and solve it the easy way.

I never tried one until about a year ago. I managed to solve it. And then I moved up to a 4x4, which was really not much harder.

When I first started, I couldn't put my rubiks cube down. I gave it a custom paint job and was constantly playing with it. Now, its a thing I periodically do to relax a little.

I have one at my desk and I solve it every day. The thing with rubiks cube is that it's all base on a set of moves. Once you know the moves it no puzzle at all.

On my desk at work:

I can get to the last couple of steps without help on the 2 on the left. The 5x5x5 is probably the easiest of the bunch -- basically the same as the 3x3x3. The three on the right are new to me and I haven't really had that much time to play with them. The rightmost ones are pretty much the same puzzle...

I don't remember. But, I don't remember a lot of "first-times" from those days.

Check out this new design on the classic cube.
Instead of the orbit being localized in the center, its closer to a corner. Causing the rotation of the peaces to become offset and creating a 'broken' look

I've solved a few, and made an origami Rubik's cube.

See? (http://aria-star.livejournal.com/294478.html) Instructions!

God damn, I was fat in those pics. But I've still got the cube!!

Oh, and a link to that ended up in the British Origami Society's magazine and they called me the Goddess Aria. I was so proud.

Deprivation!

Yup. In my country, we can't afford plastic. Give a little swedish kid a piece of string and an aluminum can and he'll be playing with it for hours.

Sadly, I solved one of these when I was about 13 or 14.

I tried again a couple days ago, and I can't get more than 3 sides. Somehow, the years have dumbed me down.
