Revision3 has a global reach, and an international audience.
Rather than filling the regular forums with political debate, how would you feel about a temporary election 08 forum?
Political debates can get heated - it can be a passionate topic, and can lead to people moving into areas that might get them suspended. In a political forum we will be a little more lenient, provided it doesn't spill over into the regular forums and doesn't get nasty.
Well, yay or nay? Poll will stay open for a day or two, or until we have concensus from the quorum.
No gerrymandering, no Diebold machines being used.

I asked for it a while ago (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showpost.php?p=258012&postcount=8), but phatlip said No. If it's going to be temporary, I say no. If you are planning on making a politics forum permanent, I say yes.

I say yes with reservation. One forum would quickly become daunting. It would probably hav to be several--or are you suggesting a forum heading like "General Discussions?"

If people are well behaved we can talk about making it permanent, but at this stage the idea is for it to be temporary, and just focused on the 2008 elections.
Problem with a perm forum is that not everyone is from the USA, and not all Americans care - so its not going to be of general interest to most people in the long run.
But like the internet, lets try this experiment, and see how it evolves.

Since you say temp, I vote no. That's stupid to have it around for a couple months. We already have two threads for each party. Why move those to a separate area for a couple months.

Yay.
Because I wish not to see the GD forums flooded with just politics topics.
For the 08 elections be nice to have a temp forum.

Can't you do subforums of General Discussion?
Like it's not viewable from the top level viewing of gen disc / bugs / all the shows separate forums, but once you come into Gen Disc, it shows up at the top?
I think that would be a good idea.
And a ladies forum up there too. cough.
I think it's a good idea too. It would make it easier for those who want to avoid politics to do so.

Hence, it's pointless.

better to have it in its own section than polluting the rest of the forum.
It depends on how they handle it. If the forum is deleted after the election, it would be useless. However, they could simply have it become a more generalized politics forum instead.

My proposed intent is that it is temporary for the elections, but at the end of that period, if its working well there should be nothing wrong with keeping it around as a more general politics area - but I doubt it will get as much traffic as it does pre-election.

What about political discussions not directly related to the elections? Would that go in the Election Forum as well or General? If General I don't think it would make much sense.
I support a permanent POLITICS forum but don't think it should be solely for the election or temporary.

I absolutely say YES. The forum I was with before rev3, and still occasionally check in on, is a Macintosh/Apple site. At the beginning of the first gulf war their general section was just deluged with politics so much that they created a politics/war subtopic. It is still there, and still vibrant, and full of mostly interesting, mostly civil, well worded discussions. And it went international, (er, war is international, usually) and I have learned so much about life and politics from other nations on there that I heartily recommend it here.
We got a lot of awesome "un-americans" (haha) here, and I would love to learn more about their cultures and politics.
so I say just a Politics subsection, easily avoidable, easily findable...
(but only if crumbles and me can moderate it, haha)

this thread (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22207) on trs is kinda political, too, and makes me think. If we "ghetto" the politics, cool folks like those on that thread might never look for it, respond, share their wisdom.

by ghetto, I mean, seperate it from the other threads, so folks who never go to general, may never find it. and add their wisdom to it. But I still say, yes to haveing one.

Politics forum is coming. Not just restricted to US 2008 Presidential Election, though we anticipate that will be the main focus for the immediate future.
And Crumbles - it will be a permanent section.
