San Fran: where should we stay?

Mid-thirties couple, comprised of and Unemployed Mac Geek husband married to IBM employee needs nice hotel to stay in at the end of October 24th-29th.

She has some event at The Palace Hotel. I, the husband, am piggy backing a free trip out of this. We spent a long weekend in Frisco before kids and stayed at the Alta Mira in Sausalito. We understand it's closed now. Any other ideas for us?

Maybe even some things to do. We have done Alcatraz, Pier 45, Chinatown...all the tourist stuff before. Monday, Tuesday it will only be me loitering the town, hoping to get a little geek fix.

Any help with ideas anyone?

You could stay near the Haight and go to Golden Gate Park at the end of it and see the wild buffalo. I used to go to the Haight at night and hang out with the homeless people. They're not "oh, poor homeless people," they're the type who prefer to owe no man anything and to own their own time, and they're some of the happiest people. Sitting in a little hippie group with some music playing - very relaxing. If I ever had to be homeless again, I'd go live in the Haight. Really, going there, day or night, is underrated.

Know what's sad? It's so close to the city, and yet so rarely go there. We are discussing, while I am typing, how we need to take advantage of where we are before moving to Santa Barbara. Wonderful city.

What price range are you looking at?

I agree with Aria. Look for the wild flubalo at Golden Gate Park and visit the Haight. Also Lombard Street. Too twisty for me, but give it a shot. Also, if you get a day, visit wine country. Also visit Cupertino and see Apple HQ! And come visit Aria and I. We are right around the corner!

Thanks we found a joint. High nightly rent though. We'll have to check out the Park.

Wish there was some "Geek" places to actually visit while in town. I guess the "Geek" places are not that cool to visit, just cool to see the products that come from them.
