Alright I havent read many comics...Few now and then but I am about to start reading lots and getting into comic books and I need somewhere to start. Anyone know a good internet place to buy comics?
How about the Civil War series? I was looking for this and had trouble finding the official ones that everyone is talking about. Any info would be appreciated.

If you're only into reading trades you can order them from amazon.com that's what i usually do when i buy them.

From what I understand there are not Civil War trades yet. But what kind of books are you looking to read?

Seeing as how it keeps getting delayed, and delayed, and DELAYED, I wouldnt expect one until AFTER the 52 Trade. Yeah, I said it. Come on Joe Quesada, wanna fight?

Yeah, that's a good start, and you should pick up "In the Beginning" from the MAX line.

If that's when Ennis first took over, then yes. It's a bit more humorous than more recent punisher storylines, but in my opinion, that makes it more enjoyable.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're into superheroes, I can't recommend Invincible enough. Old school style, hilarious and genuine characters, awesome twists, you can't lose. Ultimate Spider-Man is another hero book done right, which is also easilly accessible. For both of these, make sure to start at the beginning.
Runaways is another great book, about a group of teens who discover that their parents are super villains. Trust me, it's much better than it sounds. Give the first trade (or digest, I guess) a shot, but don't let anyone ruin the surprises for you!
If supers aren't your thing, Y-The Last Man and The Walking Dead are high on my list, both awesome examples of the medium used for something other than spandex.
There's a ton more, but for someone who's not really into comics yet, this is a good start. Of course, catch up on the classics like Watchmen, Preacher, X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga, Daredevil: Born Again, Gaiman's Sandman, Starman, Bone, V for Vendetta, Marvels, Kingdom Come, Superman for all Seasons, and so on.
A lotta the current stuff is really awesome too, so once you're aquainted, make sure to check out Astonishing X-Men, Young Avengers, Bendis and Brubaker's Daredevil runs, Brubaker'sCaptain America, Doctor Strange: The Oath, Civil War, The Ultimates, Robin and more.
... can you tell I'm a comics geek? Nah...

That's a good book, but I'd recommend getting 'Punisher: Born' which was a graphic novel done by Garth Ennis (who writes the Punisher series right now as Punisher MAX). It's basically the Punisher's origin, but much better than you'd expect.

And yeah, I'd recommend picking up the first trades for a lot of titles (see the 'What Are You Reading' thread for lots of cool books) and decided which ones you like, then buying the read of them. If you want to buy single issues rather than trades, I'd still recommend getting up to speed with the titles by whatever means.

Doctor Strange: The Oath
I've never heard anyone, ever, recommend a Doctor Strange book. I'm not saying it's bad, just weird to see it.

I've been looking for a doorway back into comics also. I just started with all the comics from Road to Civil War moving into Civil War. You have to start somewhere and Civil War seems to cover alot of different books.

Actually, so far, Doctor Strange: The Oath is really ****ing awesome in a very subtle way in which I just enjoy the way the story is being handled and told more than the story itself. It's written by Brian K. Vaughan and it's on issue 3, I think. it's just started, but it's a great take on a very underappreciated Marvel character. I think it's a 5 or 6 part miniseries, though, and I think it's perfect for the character.
If you read Amazing Spiderman, you already love the man known as Strange and you want him to think you're cool. haha.
Anywho, I'll go ahead and recommend picking up the first issue, b/c it really is case by case on whether or not you'll like it. I for one look forward to it...so far.

I love this thread because I've been looking into getting comic books myself. Civil War sounds good, so I might have to pick that up. I put Pride of Baghdad and the first 100 Bullets on my Christmas List.
Are those good choices?
But this thread has been really helpful, thanks guys.

Definetey Travis, definetely keep those on your XMas List. I would say replace 100 Bullets with Y:The Last Man, though...haha, you could have a Brian K. Vaughan party with yourself.
but I think I'm going to repeat something I've said in a billion other threads about Civil War, seriously:
Do not ever read Civil War until you've at least gotten to respect Captain America as the Marvel Universe's moral compass, and as a true patriot in every sense of the word. Once you love this character, and once you understand how big of a deal it is that he and Iron Man are at opposite ends of a fight, you'll love Civil War.
A lot of people don't respect Captain America ("Cap"), but they very well should. After he denounced America and became "Nomad", he then decided not to stand so much for the country he lives in, but the ideals it was founded upon of freedom and truth. At least what he originally enlisted b/c of.
He is like the Superman of the Marvel Universe. Everyone trusts him, everyone respects him, and his word is often what goes, no matter what. He is the most honorable man in the Marvel Universe an absolutely amazing fighter, and an epic figure. He is the moral compass for everyone in that Universe and should be respected above all..
anyway, leading up to Civil War, I would read (as a base for actually letting the minimalism of the actual TITLE civil war have ANY effect on you, beyond getting the tie-ins):
New Avengers Trades #1,2,3(to get a feel for some of the key players in Civil War)
Amazing Spiderman: New Avengers, (trade after that that isn't out yet...)
Then after you love Cap and see him as amazing, then and only then will the intended emotional impact of the events in Civil War work on you at all.
seeing what tony and peter were doing before hand is also just fun
(tony killed a plane full of innocents and peter promised tony he'd follow him anywhere)

also guys, if you are new to comics and want suggestions, stop posting threads like this and just hit up what I like to call "Abacusand13south's Part of Town" called "What Have You Been Reading Thread". If you have your settings to 40 posts per page (which i highly recommend...go to your user cp), a list of Wizard's 100 Best Trade Paperbacks of All Time is there on the first page and it is a GREAT starting point for anyone who wants to get into great comics. Seriously. Working backwards from that list is a great idea. Anyway, just pluggin that thread for all y'all new to comics.

Well, I started getting into 'cape and tights' comics again after a long hiatus, from listening to Geekdrome. I would sporadically buy 100 Bullets, or other 'adult' crime books... but recently, from a Geekdrome recommendation, I picked up a Daredevil comic. I've never read a Daredevil book before, and I'm totally hooked!!! I've started going back and buying back issues, and picked up the Essential Daredevil, to get some more background on the character.
The writing is so damn good in this recent Daredevil run... I'm pretty damn shocked. It sort of blows away the Civil War series, and probably should have won comic of the year on the Dromies.
Anyways, I strongly recommend the Man Without Fear. Great stuff.
