i'm trying to decide whether to get a used 2nd gen/slim now, or wait until the new one comes out.
i'm also thinking of trying the homebrew thing out, and i hear that the new one will likely not be hackable.
apparently the 3001's will be about the $200 when they come out, and the used slim's are now hovering around $170 on ebay.
any thoughts?

My PSP has been sitting in a box in my closet for over two years. I almost decided break it out for FF7: Crisis Core. But for what ever reason I passed. There still just isn't anything I really want to play on the PSP.

I'm looking to sell mine. If you know anyone in the Raleigh area let me know.

I have a PSP-2000, and I recently modded it.
The joy I get from ActRaiser on-the-go means my vote goes towards PSP-2000.

The 3000 doesn't offer too much improvement. The only thing I would get it for is the better screen and anti-glare screen, but the screens on the older models are pretty good for what they are. It's nothing like the jump from DS Phat to Lite.
I'd recommend the hacked 2001 just because you get more play out of it. At least, I am. I'm going back to old PS1 games for my RPG fill right now since the RPG line up for the PSP isn't exactly what I want. Plus, you can throw on an SNES emulator and some roms on there and you'd have a ton of games with you.
$200 is usually for a bundle price with a game, so I'm sure if you want the 3000, you can find it for the stand alone price of $170.

I have my original and I do love it. It syncs well with the PS3 as well and streams all sorts of stuff from your PS3. I know that there is an endless supply of PSP haters out there so I'm not surprised by the responses so far. Personally speaking I'm sure that any new PSP could be hacked. Having said that will anyone take it upon themselves to do it. Darkalex is the guy who did most of the hacks but would he bother with a new unit? no idea personally. I like the PSP for a lot more than homebrew though so go with the one that you're most comfortable with.

well i think there are enough games out there to keep me occupied.
i guess i'm just looking for sufficient justification / rationalization to buy one now as opposed to waiting for the new one to come out AND be hacked.
i can't even justify it with the price, because it looks like the new one will be about the same price as the old one is now.
argh.

Without question wait. Even if you go with the old one, the introduction of the new model will mean ebay prices will have to drop [unless they somehow made the new one unhackable, then the ebay price'll go up  but this is unlikely]

Or, more likely, it'll be changed enough as to not be hackable at first, sending the slim prices up for awhile until someone figures it out.
It basically comes down to if he wants homebrew right away. Can't say as to if there's anything really worth waiting for the new one, though.

I'd get the new one. I'm selling my second generation one to buy this one when it comes out. The new color depth and glare screen combined with the amount I can get for my existing unit make it worth the upgrade for me.
I adore my PSP. I hacked my original unit, but I never did much with anything that required the hack. I do occasionally listen to music on it with internet radio or mp3s, and it is great for video, but I mostly want to play the legit PSP games.

I got an original the other day for 129.00. I bought it solely for its hackable ability. Although I'm having difficulty getting my feet wet (any suggestions as to where to start would be great).
Anyway, is the new PSP an actual new line, ala DS was to GBA, or is it just upgrades to the PSP Slim?

Upgrade. PSP slim added more memory for quicker loading, smaller unit, lighter weight and the ability to output video through component or composite, and games through components. The new one improves color clarity, adds glare resistance, a microphone and if I'm not mistaken games through composite as well.

um dudes the new psp mobo is unhackable as of now. I'm to lazy to offer proof right now but I read in a lot of forums that Pandora doesn't work on the new mobos. SO if homebrew is your aim than stick with the old ones. from what I've heard the built in mic and a new better screen are the upgrades of the new one.

they said the same about the slim. If Darkalex gets at it I seriously doubt he couldn't hack it.

I never really gotten into the Homebrew myself. I had an original, sold it so I could get stuff for my 360. Bought a newer model in the Daxter bundle for $200. I like it because I got the Family Guy UMD, Daxter and a memory stick for less then all of those seperate probably would've costed. The new ones I heard will come out with a bundle that has one with a movie (National Treasure 2?), Secret Agent Clank, coupon for free PSN download and 1 gig memory stick I believe. The other for the same price will come with a coupon I think and a 4 gig memory stick. So if they do hack the newer version might be worth waiting. Most of the time those memory sticks cost much more then say Tiger Direct would sell them last I recall. So in that sense the 4gig model might be worth the price.
I've got enough RPG's to keep me busy for awhile with Final Fantasy:CC (which my opinion shifted and hating) and Tactics which is a decent port of the original if you don't own it. I also like the Sony store where you can buy PSN, PS1 and PSP games. My only problem is not being able to buy stuff from the store so ya. Plus, I've bought a few movies and games for a really good price used at Gamestop.

mem sticks are not that expensive anymore. i got a 4 gig for 20 bucks from e bay, and 8 gig for 60 from amazon, and the net is riddled with 1 and 2 gig sticks for dirt cheap. the mem sticks being included is not a good selling point for me. I'd rather pay less and buy my own stick.
but I'm telling you prepare for a long wait till those things are hackable.
I think they should do what apple is doing. let the community develop apps then sell them on a sony app store. which brings me to an important question
If almost anyone can develop an app and sell it in the app store for the iPhone, does that mean apple is handing out developers kits? And if so wouldn't this make it a 1000 times easier to hack the iPhone since apple is basically giving you the behind the scenes stuff?

Just because people can develop for it doesn't mean they'll be gems. I've seen really random stuff for sale on the store. Like an app that's a screen saver that went for like $1000? I thought it was a gag till I searched and found it. I think Apple needs to sift through what gets posted onto the iTunes store sometime. It would be cool to see more content developed for the PSP and sold at somewhere between $5 and $10. Unless it's a pretty big game, if it's worth $20 I'll buy it.

yeah digg did a story on that I'm rich app. some poor guy bought it on accident. I'd hate to be that dude. but quality or not I don't like being able to download stuff from other developers besides sony. the built in photo viewer for example is good but there are way better ones out there. there are pdf viewers and all sorts of apps that I'd like to use legitimately on my psp.

That's cool. I like the idea of community created content. I just don't want to see a bunch of the same apps, or those that aren't great for a high price. Sony could learn from Apple & Microsoft and kind of filter what goes up for download and purchase. Set price points, filter content, but don't have as many restrictions as Microsoft. It's cool they're bending the rules so you can port your character from Penny Arcade Ep. 1, but that's another rant for another day. But yeah, I have no doubt that people can create good programs but if they did it I'd rather it not be flooded with little standards or too strict like with Microsoft.
