In this season premiere episode of Hak5 Mubix joins us to talk about what's new in Maltego, an open source forensics and intelligence gathering tool. Shannon rocks out with Audio surf, and Darren heads downtown to the coffee shop to own a wireless network with a pineapple. Grab some hax0rflakes 'cause the bricks are gone and we're back!

About the video quality....

I know this is going to come up so I should probably explain. Episodes 401 and 402 are going to look a little muddier than you're typical Hak5 episode. Unfortunately we're using some new equipment and shooting two episodes at a time and by the time we figured out we had some problems with our composite cables it was too late.

Episodes 403+ the issue is resolved. The screen captures look normal, the episodes aren't overly dark and blurry, and the audio sounds a bit better.

Ahh the joys of homebrew video production.

Nice, what's used for the setup? Is it the same thing Leo uses for TWiT? I forget what it's called, Scoble did a video on it, but it looks like a great setup.

That would be the Tricaster, but no, Hak5 don't use one.

So are you guys only going to do a season's worth of shows, as opposed to 52 weeks a year? Is that why the show is titled Episode 401 (Season 4, Ep 1)?

We're going completely weekly. For 52 weeks straight. Every Wednesday, methinks.

He recently departed from the show.

That's disappointing...He and Darren were among the few in the show who actually seemed upbeat and exciting. Regardless I'm still loving the show.

I just read this on his blog. That's very sad - I miss Alli and him.

The content of the 401 seemed a little bit shallow - but I think that's due to season start.

We'll be honest, we were a bit rushed, the premier kind of snuck up on us, finishing up the destroyed hakhouse, completing the set, and really never having a test of the production system, were all components that went into the first and second episodes.

But I'm glad to report that from episdoe 403+ the quality will be better, (Not HD, still need an $11,000 mixer for that one) but definitely better, and in addition, we're having more fun now than we ever have before.

For those of you who are turned off by the quality, as I mentioned above, those items have been addressed, and we hope you tune in again!

Thanks,
Matt

Guys, It's hak 5. It's all about being rough but still being passionate about it.

This episode felt rushed but still cool. I do want to see more of that pineapple haxor-pwner.

Agreed, I definetly felt pretty rushed for this ep, and I know I need some more energy which I worked on in the next ep.

It wasn't that bad (though i've never seen hak5 before so i have nothing to compare it with). Besides you could tell that the show will be good even 4x01 wasn't a stellar episode.

Like all Hak5 season premieres it's an evolution. That's why your feedback is so important. This ep, and I think 402, were a bit rushed. (We shoot two episodes every other Saturday).

The video production stuff is ironed out on 403/404 and we're all a lot more up-beat and relaxed. 404 in particular is almost a little zany. Whatever ;)

The number format does seem a little odd eh? I just didn't think hak5--0032 gave proper justice to the legacy that is our last 3 years of regular episodes, live shows, specials and sketches. Thus 401. We're a 52 episode a year show so no breaks in the summer like in the past. Maybe we'll just go up to 0452 then suddenly switch over to 0501 with new set dressing ;) lol

The live switcher or video mixer if you will is an Edirol V-1. It's an inexpensive (sub-$1000) board that supports four analog composite/svideo inputs and three outputs. It just does simple transitions and basic keying. We've become fond of its ease of use but between him and our scan converter (the box that takes VGA in from our computers and outputs it via s-video to the mixer) we could really use an upgrade. I can't wait to go HD.

We've got our eyes on the Edirol V-440 HD. It'll do four HD inputs (Component or VGA! woot no crappy scan converter!) and four upscaled SD inputs. This board is so sweet, I want it to have my babies. I can't wait to get this thing and match the resolution of the rest of the network.

I have to say; this episode is great. It's exactly as Darren said - the rawness of Season 1, but with the production quality (the video quality is a little niggle; easily overlooked and as already stated; will be sorted for ep 3 onward) of season 2/3.

The new set - great; well spread out, love it!
Snubs - great addition to the cast; looking forward to weekly gaming related segments!
Content - back to basics; great content and well looked into - and more detail to be revealed in the upcoming eps, giving the viewer more to look forward to!

Show rating overall; 9.5/10.

As for something I'd like to see; how about another DM (similar to the Wess vs Darren UT match) although have Snubs V Darren in CSS? ;) That'd be more of a live show idea but oh well!

The shows ads were in relation to the show and didnt feel out of place at all. Hooray for a beer sponsor!

Bloopers - funny as hell as always! Although when will we get the season 3 big blooper finale which I read somewhere about.. :P

Glad to see you guys back; really psyched and can't wait til 4x02!

Trust your technolust ;)

I really liked the show... Can we get it upgraded to HD quality?

This is really is nit picking but I would get Lane in to do some directing pointers. :) And Hippy to do some editing tutorials.. Other then that the material was awesome the show was very entertaining!

Thanks

Renehasp, we'll be going HD as soon as it's financially feasible.

Direction and production are something we just need to get back into. And you should see much improved quality in 403 onward.

Best Regards,
Matt

Is there anything in Williamsburg other than CW and W&M?

I wasn't as bothered by the video quality, but the content was obviously rushed as well. Not quite up the the packed with content standard you had mid-season form in year 3. But I'll cut you some slack, watch, and wait judgement until 4.5 or 4.06.

There's tons to do in Williamsburg, and I just moved here 3 months ago so I haven't experienced it all. Busch Gardens is always fun. :D

I like going downtown and making fun of the tourists. They're silly.

It's like a small city that just happens to have a history dating to the 1700's and where my Great (17 generations ago) Grandma originated.

maybe its hak5 deprivation and the fact that bad hak5 is better than no hak5 but I really liked the episode. I can agree that the show needs to go HD but that will be very soon because there are lots of hak5 supporters out there that would be happy to buy a swag bag myself included. Keep up the good work guys.

Snubs seemed a bit nervous. Don't worry though as time goes on you'll get comfortable. I remember when I started doing my radio internship I was nervous as hell but got comfortable after a few weeks. Looking forward to Episode 2. Mubix pwns. I did like the breakdown of the terms for Mubix's segment but don't go too terribly indepth to define terms and break things down, I get a kick out of figuring out all the speak, or either I'm just weird like that. :)

I do think you guys need to proof the episode before you launch it. That accidental camera shift in the middle of Darren speaking was funny to me, a behind the camera junkie (I like the backstage stuff better than the on air stuff). And it seems the audio needed a boost, snubs move the mic clip further up (about 1/2-1 inches should do the trick). But other than that honestly, I liked it.

Oh and Rev 3 send them so damn HD cameras........sheesh. If I can't read whats written in pen on the walls I don't even want to bother watching................j/k

They have the HD cameras, just not the mixer. They're raising funds by selling schwag. Plus, remember, they're still in the process of rebuilding after the flood.

Some of it was just being rusty. I know I hadn't been in front of a camera since around march or april-ish, pretty much since the surgery that almost killed me. Even from 401 to when we filmed 404 was a HUGE difference in production quality, IMO. We will get better and better. :)

I've enjoyed what I've seen so far and haven't seen your show until it came on Rev3.
I have been to Williamsburg once and visited the tourist spots including the old town and Busch Gardens.

I've already been watching some Systm and Tekzilla and were wondering if there's much overlap in the topics and/or reviews?

Will you guys and gal or (kanes and wahine) review games like Fallout 3 or even Spore or are the majority of your reviews about FPS type games like the Counter Strike and Crysis style games?

I look forward to your HD shows in the future.

You know, I was almost expecting there to be some overlap, but so far that hasn't been the case. We cover such a broad variety on those 3 shows that it'd be pretty rare for us to actually do a segment on teh same thing.

The games I'm trying to focus on are more of the underground games that you dont hear a lot about and dont see in stores. The open source, downloadable, free (and cheap) games.
