they have HD cameras but they need a HD mixer that cost $11K so switching to HD will take some time

Hey MiniMan, we worked out what was causing the muddyness, and the lack of contrast that appears in 401, and will appear in 402.

While we have HD cameras, as mentioned before, we don't have an HD mixer, however we're working toward that, and every bit helps. http://www.hak5.org/stickers/

I can't tell you how excited I am to be here on Rev3, on top of weekly episodes!

Thanks,
Matt

What the hell? Was this filmed on a laptop camera? I don't even think the audio was in sync...

We had an issue with a split that was cutting the bandwidth of the video signal worse than what we thought it was.

As mentioned above, we've corrected that issue in epsisode 403 and beyond.

The image quality isn't up to our standards, and we're working to do everything we can to make sure that we have the best image quality before actually going HD.

Thanks for the understanding,
Matt

Also, are you guys going to keep both forums running? I noticed the "trivia" thread wasn't on REV3.

The Trivia was correctly answered here on the Rev3 forums, not exactly sure why it's not visible to you, but I'll check on that.

Thanks Steve,

Why must the show be live mixed instead of edited like every other show?

hak5matt
09-08-2008, 03:07 PM
All of the shows which are shot in the Rev3 Studios are live switched, shows like TRS, EpicFU, Diggnation, where there is only one camera are alot easier to edit, but when you have 3 different parts of a set like we do, it's not really possible to go through all of that tape if we were recording to 3 different tapes on 3 different cameras.

What Cameras are you using?
Cant you just Sync roll the whole thing?

hak5matt
09-08-2008, 03:23 PM
sync rolling, and then switching cameras in vegas still requires 3 hours of tape downloads, and all of the editing that goes along with the process. I'm not the editor, darren is, and the amount of time it takes to edit an episdoe live switched is still a chore.

Thanks Steve,
MattMatt, you'll have to forgive me. I'm sick as hell and stayed home from work. Apparently the meds are effecting me more than I thought. Somehow, despite me looking a few times, I just never saw the trivia thread that's there.

Sheesh, I need to go back to bed.

Switching the video live-to-tape takes more equipment and experienced crew during the shoot, but has the advantage that it cuts down the post-production time (potentially to zero), which means you get the show faster, and/or more often.

I correctly answered the trivia thread, which I made myself, here on these forums, but snubs made a thread pointing to the Hak5 forums, which bites. People would have to make an account over there giving others time to answer before you even if you were first, so I am guessing they will tell people to go to the Hak5 forums instead now since I doubt they'll do 2 winners each week or merge into the Rev3 forums.

Either way, I'm getting stickers, w00t.

Exactly. IIRC, they even had an episode of Hak5 where they did an homage to the opening credits of the Broken.

Yes, in fact we did. You can check it out here:

also, I'm new to the forums so I'm not sure if there is special code to embed a video or not. regardless check out our parody of the broken, dubbed "The Token" which aired at the end of our first season. I'm really proud of it. :)

I've been following Hak5 for a long time (since s1e2 or so I believe). Personally I've almost always been elated with the content of the show, but the production quality in my opinion has vastly DECREASED since going to live switching. I don't really understand why you need live switching, the format of the show doesn't have to be centered around a single room with multiple corners. While being able to do the whole "let's kick it over to so and so in the other corner of the room thing" is cool, it's not worth the cut in production quality. I don't see why any one segment would require more than a main camera and a B-roll cam, which still mean a bit more editing, but I personally think it would be (and was) worth it.

Please, get reasonable video / audio quality. One of the reasons I never really watched Hak5 when it wasn't on Revision3 was because of the poor video & audio quality.

hak5matt

Video / audio quality is much improved from episode 403 onward.

We'll be going HD as soon as it's financially fisable.

Thanks for the comments.

The problem Darren was having without live switching
- He works 9-5
- In the spare time/late hours. Darren would edit the show together in vega and this might takes 1-4 days to produce that 40 min for single episode of hak5
- Missing release date of 5th. Due to behind on editing or bad export/encode
- People in the community get cranky like they want to burn something. When a release is missed and this upsets the hak5 crew. The crew non-intended to let viewers down by promising a release on the 5th

Which is when 'live-to-tape' mixing was introduce. A segment/intro/outros could be recorded to a NAS or portable HDD then bought into vega for editing everything together

In comparison l2tape production time was down to zero. Captain Planet!

Having said that image quality is a minor problem inconvenience for hak5 viewers and the crew. The content makes people watch the show and people shouldn't shelve the show for not being in HD

It's the spoiled high expectations of rev3 viewership expecting every show to be HD

Yes it's the future. But people are still listening to AM radio and breast feeding at the age of 20!

Tough crowd.

HD and switching isn't cheap. The Hak5 crew are not going to become bajillionaires by giving away content for free.

Help them along to their goal be clicking on the ad banners on their webpages over at hak5.org, or buying a t-shirt (http://www.jinx.com/hak_5/t_shirt.html?catid=86).

Until then, remember its a fine line between offering constructive criticism and being abusive.

I know I am going to get flamed into oblivion. Not knowing if Hak5 is now owned by rev3 or content is just being distributed by rev3.

If it is owned by rev3 can't they just you know, give / lend you $11k. We read news stories about Rev3 obtaining millions in VC.

HD hasn't been a high priority for hak5. Cause of the money, But both release date and content came first

just distribution partners eh? You guys are running their ads and the show reflects on the station. You'd think they'd want to do whatever they could to keep programs with their name on it standardized.

Not that anything is particularly WRONG with hak5. high def isnt THAT big of a deal, the standard def looks good enough as long as it's properly focused (i think one of the guys posted that they fixed that issue with ep3)

We're VERY close to going HD.

Revision3 is our distribution and marketing / sales partner.
They handle all of the distribution, as well as the sales for ad sponsors on the show.

If you'd like to help us go HD, you can visit http://www.hak5.org/stickers and donate to the HD fund, and we'll send you some stickers and if it's over a certain amount, we'll send you some other great stuff!

Thanks for understanding.
