I hadn't seen a post about this yet, so I figured I'd throw it out there. I'm sure 90% of the people on this site were TechTV fans.

:( Huge TechTV fan but just the thought of anyone missing like this is freaky...I really hope they are ok and for some odd reason have not told C-net or anyone where they are.
Lets wish for the best.

I keep refreshing the various articles hoping that there will be good news, but nothing so far.
Not to make light of the situation, but shouldn't there be something that the math consultant for Numb3rs could come up with to pinpoint their location based on car, phone and credit card usage data? Seems like so far they've only narrowed it down to one-fourth of two states.

There are certain things about which is it immature to jest. There are two small children also missing who could be dead at this point.

oh, and for the record, i wasn't being humorous...i know how to track people via their cellphones (whether it's a plan, prepaid, CDMA, GSM, whatever) and strangely enough, with GSM at least, it's actually more accurate than GPS. So you geniuses should STFU until you know what you're talking about...

Y'know, there isn't anything wrong making a joke, of course the exception being if you're making a joke at the thing. There's a difference which is, for some, hard to discern.

tokenuser, I think you've got the wrong person here. I wasn't trying to be amusing or funny at all. Why would I have started this thread if I wasn't concerned for the safety of James and his family?
I was seriously questioning why there isn't something more that could be done to find them. I referenced the show Numb3rs because that's what they do on the show in every episode. So you can drop the high-and-mighty act.
That said, this thread should not have turned into a ***** fest. There are 4 people missing, and that's all anybody should be worried about. So if you don't have anything to say about James, his family, or the search.. shut the **** up.

In any case, you and I are old enough to remember the days of no cellphones, GPS or low jack. If it was just as easy as tracking his cellphone, I'm sure someone tried to call it already. However, if that part of th NW is anything like the NE, there could be large patches of poor coverage. This would make cellphone tracking pretty useless.

James went out Saturday morning to find help, he was suppose to come back five hours later, but never returned.

Leaving the car was a foolish mistake that I hope doesn't end in tragedy.

Foolish or very brave. I'd risk my life if I thought there was a chance to save my kids. His little baby was only 7-months and they were running out of fuel. They were burning their tires for god sake. It was only a matter of time before Mom's milk dried up. I'm sure he felt he would be able to follow the road back, but it's easy to get lost by all white. Yet another reason to have a hand held GPS.

They had been out there for a week when he went for help. You can only sit around waiting to be rescued for so long. For all he knew, they had called off the search. He probably decided that if he didn't take matters into his own hands they would all die out there. I hope he's survived the past few days and they find him soon.

Yeah he did what he thought would save his family. When you are in a situation like this you risk your life in order to save your family... that's just how it is.... it isn't foolish... its doing what you think will save your family.
Now we all must pray that a miracle can occur and James is found alive. He seems like a great man/friend/husband/father/son/etc... and he DOESN'T deserve to die this way!

I honestly can admit that I teared up over the whole situation and refused to believe that 2 little girls now have no father.
My prayers go out to the family and loved ones, and I feel that if I was ever involved in a situation such as that one I hope that I can be half as brave as Mr. Kim was. I have a great deal of respect for a man like that.
P.S. Some MSNBC story is stating that he was somewhat alive when they found him but that medical attention did not arive soon enough. These reports are unconfirmed though.

This really did make me shed a few tears..I know what it's like to lose a father but I feel more for the young kids as one will never remember him and the other will only have vague memories...I of course feel bad for his wife as she lost her husband and now musst gather the strength to get through this and have the strength for her children.

Not to trivialize your loss, but, everyone who lives long enough will see their parents die. I watched my dad die of cancer in front of me.
The sad thing here is that he was obviously such a great Dad and that he had to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his children over something as trivial as a wrong turn. It's really senseless and a fine man is dead.

I know but the way I lost my father no child should see...you don't want to find him with blood handprints on the wall and laying in plural pools of blood.
I just think when a person is violently or unexpectedly taken from you esp at such young ages should not happen to kids.

Man, people who likes watch shows like Indigital must be familiar with past shows like techtv's Fresh Gear or presents CNET.com. James Kim was a huge part that had contributed greatly in this field for many years. However a horrible incident had occurred that had led to his death. He will be much missed and never forgotten. My prayers go out to him and his family members, but cannot grasp the fact that he is really gone. I had viewed his review on the zune not to long ago, but now he's not here anymore. I was wondering on how any of the viewers are aware of this disaster and your feedback. Thank you.

I don't like this idea.
Since the Kim family was the second family this year to get trapped on that road and they advise against that road even in the summer..they should shut it down..just some barely known back road...they also should put more cell phone towers in the area.

What the hell is CNN's problem? I cannot belive their shameless coverage of this tragic story. I actually met James once while in the bay area visiting friends who live in Berkeley. He was just on the street and I was like "Hey! TechTV rules!". He was a really nice guy, and I wish I could have gotten to know him. His family doesn't deserve their loss to be exploited for profit. I can understand running this story once, but no. They had to bust out Google Maps and re-create everything that happend in some screwed up documentary, and then air it dozen times. Just let the wounds heal for christ's sake. This isn't like the war in Iraq where journalists have an obligation to expose the truth to the masses. This is just pure tragedy. I mean really, what is their goal? To piss off as many of James' friends as much as possible? Maybe I'm over reacting but god damn they could give it a rest already.
