View Full Version : Please tone it down with the computer talk

I really want to enjoy the show, I've never watched before, but what makes it almost unwatchable for me is the "noob" "leet" type of language. It just sounds forced. Could you please tone that down?

Yikes, first episode and there are cries to nerf the content already. Makes me wonder if a show like this will actually survive on Rev3.

PCs became far too easy the moment reassigning IRQs was no longer required when installing a new device :) (just joking)
In truth I hope this show survives as we need some more non-website review/interview (ie non GigaOm/PopSiren/Diggnation/Digg Reel etc.) shows, which is why I'm glad Alex Albrecht is thinking about his crockpot show...I secretly cry over the lack of Ctrl+Alt+Chicken :(

The thing is, if you tone down the language much more, you end up with... well, something not very advanced. The tips in the lower thirds should help (perhaps a few more wouldn't go amiss) and anything you don't understand you could google, it'll help you learn.

I dont' think pplufthesun is talking about content of the show, but some of the 1337 adjectives and verbs we use. Noob, leet, pwn, etc. We'll try and keep that in check and not sound like we're a bunch of 9 year olds on set ;)

There is alot of people out there that use leet all the time because of online culture. It is not just computer but gamers. Go on XBOX Live and talk to some of the peeps that are ranked 50 on Halo 3 and see who all speaks leet.

If someone can't google a term or go to urban dictionary to find the answer, they might not be the right target market anyways...I'm just sayin.
Oh ha didn't see this, but am I the only one that likes trying to figure out the speak/terms? I mean I have no problem if you guys want to explain something for a little bit but let's not spend a whole lot of time going indepth on a term. That's why I love this show.

What so you should be tasteless and dry? While I agree any given show shouldn't go over board on anything, trending tech talk is savvy to the industry and not necessarily indicative of an age level but rather geekness.
This is after all a tech teaching show so instead of just watching...learn. What you don't know look up
As with all things let's give this new team a warm Rev3 welcome and at least give them a try.

Unless you really love terms like pwn and noob that much, then we have a completely different set of problems.

Honestly, didn't see an issue. It's part of the culture and part of the jargon. Plus, the show does include hardcore gamer stuff. If you don't talk the talk, you'll never really be able to walk the walk. Ok, maybe that reasoning is a bit thin. But at the same time, I'm not exactly interested in watching Masterpiece Theater for computers. :)

it's not really a part of the culture anymore outside of Halo. Whenever playing CoD4 [PC], only people who use grenade launchers or hack are called noobs, and even then it's o's not 0's. The best players I've seen [usually between 60 and 115 kills per game] are the ones who are always respectful and mature when they talk. I don't really care if they use the vocabulary or grammar of an english professor, just cutting back on forcibly injecting cliche "gaming" terms [that parents and the media use to belittle gaming no less] into a conversation that doesn't require them.

We'll keep using the jargon of the culture just as we always had, but thanks for bringing it to our attention because I agree, after watching back 401/402 I see that it was a lot heavier than our norm. (I'm at fault, I got overly excited with my pineapple)
Also, jargon in this culture transforms. Back in the mid 90s noob was lamer and leet was k-rad, at least on the DalNet channels I hung out on. Look it up ;)

Ahh; NetBus, Back Orifice, Sub7, Blade-Runner...
I'd like to go back to myself when I was 11-12 years old and slap myself around for using that stuff, then send myself out of the room, play around with it a few moments just to relive it, then get to work on teaching my younger self how to be able to code those things and so much more.
I had my friends stay over one weekend and we just spied on some poor girl in England (Lancaster), doing straight surveillance on her (writing down contacts, spying on conversations, just gathering info). It's sort of creepy, and I'm glad I found computer security is more fun when you just focus on the exploits themselves, instead of using them against people.

Yeah, please DON'T tone it down on the computer talk. I enjoy my fair share of n00b and pwn in my daily sentences, but if that has to be toned down so be it. Keep the level you guys are at, because the part that drives me crazy about a lot of the Rev3 shows is that they aren't technical enough so that they appeal to a wider audience. This show needs to stay the same. Keep up the good work Hak5 crew!
hak5darren
09-17-2008, 06:06 PM
Don't worry we're not getting less technical, more in fact. The "computer talk" being referred to was the leet hax0r speak. And that only needs to be fine tuned by a single notch ;)
everyone needs to cool it, let the guys talk how they want..
i get a kick out of actually hearing people saying noob, wtf, etc etc outside of the internet. I guess im so used to READING it all through the years..
although in public i prefer to use my own term "nubster", "nubbie", "nubcock" etc etc.

angrypenguin

I love the vocabulary of this show. I am a linux user and was once a complete noob. But if it wasn't for the wiser users pointing me to the manpages, using linux jargon, and forcing me to use the CLI, I never would have learned it. Using new vocabularies is what encourages new users to seek out information and teach themselves. This is the most conducive way to learn.
Hand holding only enables you to depend on others for the things you need. Eventually you have to stand on your own two feet and developing a foundation based on new words and research is the best way to do that.
So in conclusion, keep up the good work guys. Please don't dumb down the vocabulary for the "n00bs". If you don't want to have to learn anything on your own and want everything served up on a nice platter, watch tekzilla or systm for how-to's that give you the step by step that require no thinking on your part.
*I wasn't slamming tekzilla or systm, I watch both. The styles are just completely different. :-)

I agree with the not so calm penguin above. This is exactly what I was worried about when I heard that the show would be moving to Rev3. Every other show that I've liked here has eventually been dumbed down until it is boring for anybody with the least bit of technical insight (okay, apart from Diggnation but that one was never about tech in the same way). Tekzilla (which was originally a "replacement" for InDigital) has become nothing more than a low-tech Q&A show. Systm has been dumbed down to a shadow of what it used to be. theBroken is no more, etc.
I seriously hope that this is not the direction that Hak5 is going. It's bad enough that without Wess we will have less cool electronics hacks. Don't ruin the show by trying to make it mainstream applicable.
To me Hak5 has always been about putting the information out there. Then there will be people who will use it to go "pwn some n00bs", and others who will use it to protect themselves (and others) from getting pwned. Darren seems to represent the first part (at least in way of speaking) while Matt seems to represent the second part. And it has never been about catering to the lowest common denominator. Sure the l33t-speak might be unnecessary, but it's part of the culture and it's always been part of the show. Removing it would not make the show unwatchable, but it's a slippery slope guys. Honestly, fake ads like the "haxor flakes" and the n00b roasting one, are among some of my favourite non-factual content of the show, and if stuff like that goes away then I think it would subtract some of the goodness from the show.
In short: Keep the show as it is guys, and don't listen to the whining from people who are not the target audience. Let the low tech people watch the low tech shows, so the rest of us can watch Hak5 in peace.
