Since there is a thread about the Daily Show/Colbert Report and JibJab's new cartoon, I figured we could start a general Humor thread.

If you find a comedian's bit or a funny bit of satire about this campaign season share it.

Please note, this isn't meant to be a "Look what McCain/Obama said! I can't believe he said that! That is so stupid it's funny!" thread.

Well, apparently the first bit o' funny here is that I can't spell Political in the thread title right.

I'm not sure if every one has already heard these, but I'd figured I'd share.
23/6 has put out some really funny "McCain Voicemails".

First one is to Palin when he picked her as VP:
http://www.236.com/blog/w/michael_weingartner_and_lee_camp/mccains_voice_mail_to_palin_le_8644.php

The second one is to a staff writer for the New York Times:

Thanks, Badger. I just bookmarked that.

One of the strips in there is put out by Matt Bors. His strips are normally pretty funny.

A book just came out from Harvard Press about the effect of late night comedy on politics. It's called "Strange Bedfellows." It draws a good distinction between comedy that uses politics as a setup but doesn't have an agenda, and comedy that is trying to make a point. Might be a good read.

Obviously mine will be Republican, but maybe they will still make someone laugh:

Little Ralphie
A teacher in New York asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans. Not really knowing what an Obama fan was but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands except for Little Ralphie. The teacher asked Little Ralphie why he decided to be different...again.

Little Ralphie said, 'Because I'm not an Obama fan.' The teacher said, 'Why aren't you an Obama fan?' Ralphie said, 'Because I'm a Republican.' The teacher asked Ralphie 'Why are you a Republican?' Little Ralphie answered, 'Well, my Mom's a Republican and my Dad's a Republican, so I'm a Republican.' The teacher asks, 'If your Mom was a moron and your Dad was an idiot, what would that make you?' With a big smile, Little Ralphie replied, 'That would make me an Obama fan.'

Little Susie
Susie had two proud Democratic parents. One day, while showing off their daughter to their neighbor, their neighbor asked the little girl how she was. She replied: "fine!" Her Democratic parents smiled with glee and said to Susie: "Susie, tell our neighbor what you want to be when you grow up." She smiled and said: "I want to be President of the United States!" The neighbor replied: "Oh, that's wonderful, why do you want to be president so bad?" She said: "So I can build all the homeless people houses!" "Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house."

Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Old Parliament House in the foreground. Was only ever intended to be temporary.

New Parliament House in the background. Built under a hill. Public parkland on top. One of the worlds most unique and beautiful buildings inside and out.

The current PM is Labour Party, which, by US thinking makes him a liberal ... but thats a small l liberal, because a big l Liberal is actually the name of the conservative party (think Republican, without the neo-cons ... we get them too, but they are minor parties and not one of the majors). We also have the Democrats. They are the centralist party - will never govern, but held the balance of power. To paraphrase the former party leader - Don Chipp, they are there to "keep the bastards honest". Yes. They are the guys I voted for. Unfortunately the political landscape has changed, with people voting for the two major parties, and they are all but defunct as a party now. The funny thing is, I was a Democratic Republican - a democrat who supported the Australian Republican (ie secede from the Queen) movement.

How unfortunate, the Democratic Republicans violated the first rule of politics....

1. It is frustratingly impossible to "keep the bastards honest" in government.

It has been approached by various, world-famous deep thinkers in philosophy of politics. It is indeed a conundrum that may never be solved.

As a political party it is an interesting place to be ... never having enough seats to rule, but taking enough seats that there will be no clear majority in the other parties. It means that whoever gets elected, these guys have the ability to veto anything extreme. It was a true moderate party. The only real policy issue they had was a commitment to balancing the government, and to ensure that the policies are environmentally sound (a mantle since taken up by the Australian Green Party - yes, a political party dedicated to environmental issues).

How easy is it to be Stewart and Colbert at the moment? They must be editting pretty heavily to keep their shows to 30 mins.

I guess they were too preoccupied stock-piling the bibles
and guns into the various places they buried a connex to
do much rioting. Besides it's very PC these days to admit
'how far we've come' as a country, and to fade away in

I just grabbed this off Google Finance real quick. Look at April 09 and then watch as the graph increases.

The economy is far more complex than that, but it's a sign that perhaps the worst is over and that we're on our way back on our feet.

I work in a niche software market - applications for financial service professionals (investments and insurance). I can only judge the economy by our business, but we went from a sharp decline to a leveling out, and now slow and steady inquiry about our software and an increased number of RFP responses for me to complete.

Its not scientific, but insurance and investment companies are starting to spend money again (no, these were not companies covered by the TARP program).

Are we out of the weeds? No ... but the economy is coming out of its stalled position, and now is trying to overcome inertia to get moving again.

http://www.americanprogress.org/cartoons/2008/09/img/092208_big.jpg

As the economy slowed, people stopped spending and started saving. And now they are looking at investing again, but still not spending. Finally people are starting to live a more fiscally responsible lifestyle ... but I did like this cartoon, since tis is a thread for political humour thought it was fitting.

After Yasir Arafat and Carter both winning one, I think I'd turn down the award if ever offered to me. You know, for most awesome internet blogger ever.I don't think the award was deserved - esp after 10days in office (at the point of voting for the award). I think the committee gave it to him as a "you've got a lot to do, don't fuck it up" award.

Personally, Clinton and Bush (GHW - the competent Bush) should have been given a nod. Despite coming from different political spectrums they have been working together on a lot of humanitarian projects in the middle east, asia, and africa.
