I started using Debian around 1996 or 1997. The installation was a pain and hardware support was even more painful. Couple years later, I used Mandrake Linux (now Mandriva) because that was the only distro that supported my LS-120 drive at that time. Mandriva became bloated, so I started to use Ubuntu last year. I didn't like Ubuntu for some reason, so I now use Arch Linux. I used my university's VMS account and SunOS/Solaris between that time as well. It's good to be familiar with different systems and environment.

Arch is great. The advantage is that they optimized the Linux kernel for P4 and other current and fast processors, so you get a really fast and unbloated Linux system. There will be a slight learning curve in the beginning, but everything else should be fine. Their package manager is called pacman and the packages are updated very frequently.

so if i compile my own kernel it really offers nothing that slackware doesnt offer except a true package manager but pkgtools works for me

I started using Linux back in 2003, and I started off with Knoppix. I moved to Fedora Core, and then SuSE 9.1. I stopped using *nix for awhile, and last February, I got back into it, and I found a new kernel...the BSD kernel.

So now I use OpenBSD, and I don't foresee going back to Linux anymore.

I started using nix back in 1999 or so with a distro called Corel Linux long since defunct which I'd gotten on CD it wouldn't have been otherwise possible me being on dial-up then. Since then I tried SUSE, Fedora, Kantonix, Xandros and some others but fell in love with Debian and the Gnome Environment and that lead me to Ubuntu natuarally.

Late 90's started using Suse 8.2..then moved to Fedora Core 1...and continue to use Fedora Core 5...also use PCLinuxOS on another machine.

Sometime in mid-2004 I started playing around with Knoppix, and then I did my first install (Mandrake 10.1) in January 2005. Now I'm running Slackware, Ubuntu, and Debian on my PowerMac.

I started with gentoo in my first year at university and then used windows whenever I experienced any troubles with non supported hardware ;-)

Gentoo with all the things you have to setup on your own is kinda challenging if you're new to linux. For about 2 years now I have only been using windows for things like Photoshop CS ( which I couldn't get running on wine ). My dad's now using kubuntu which is a great distribution if you don't wanna get too deep into linux.

I still run Windows as my primary OS on my laptop, mainly for Photoshop CS2. For people, like myself, who have spent more than 5 years learning Photoshop, and actually use the advanced concepts within Photoshop (32-bit HDR, CMYK, etc..) then GIMP is not an option. GIMP is for basic photo editing, and the interface is terrible.

As much as I love open source software, The GIMP does NOT compare to Photoshop. I could get Photoshop 7.0 to install and run under Wine without any problems.

About a year ago I downloaded Ubuntu and gave it a try, and, well... I haven't really tried anything else! :p

About 5 years ago with Redhat 7.2. I built a server up with some spare parts to serve as a NAT/FTP box for our fraternity house with 30 rooms, each with its own cat5 cable. That was fun to run :)

3 years ago, I migrated to Gentoo on the server, and dual-booted it with Windows on my PC. Stuck with Gentoo ever since.

When I found out that windows really was a sub par O.S and there were alternatives.
