So you banned another user for criticizing you. I was not aware this was a forum designed for the amusement/benefit of the admins/moderators - I thought this was a customer-based forum for the IPTV network Revision 3. The last few weeks we have seen unwarranted bans and alleged misconduct from the staff of this forum.
I am not here to defend those who have been banned. I am here to question why there was blatant 'slippage' of the ban hammer:
From NJShadow @1150am:
"As much as I'm lovin' this thread, beware, there was one very similar to it created in the General Discussion area and, well, Token's been waving around the lock function like a 5 yr. old with a wiffle bat on America's Funniest Videos. :D"
(Yea it was a dig but clearly meant in jest. Come on it was a AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEO JOKE)
Not 20 minutes later @1210PM Tokenuser responds:
"Actually, its the ban hammer. The lock stick is much more in line with a number of the Rev3 staff.
Oops. Ban hammer slipped."
So within 20 minutes or sometime in that period Token banned NJShadow AND proceeded to taunt the banned user PUBLICALLY.
Clearly this is as immature or out of line as anything a user could have done publicly. And the ban hammer was so 'powerful' enough that the OP had to post an APOLOGY stating her non-intent to start a thread in the wrong forum. A moderator would later respond saying that she was fine.
It's almost like the Rev3 boards are being run with the moderators feelings in mind rather than that of the customer/user. Last I checked I don't come to this forum for Token's moderating I come here for the discussion among Revision3 fans. Yes maybe you don't like a user's comments. Thats ok - I don't like some people's comments either - but I IGNORE IT or use that ignore feature.
If a user can be banned for joking over the lock wiffle bat then this forum has lost its intent - to be discussion for the viewer not the paid/unpaid moderating staff.
I don't believe that any of the Rev3 actual staff would agree with these power-hungry moderators' actions in the past weeks. This is clearly a violation of the consumer's trust in the moderators.

AH here becomes the crux phatlip.
If we can't criticize the moderators then what have we become but the huddled masses in a fascist police forum?
"#4 - This A Community That Should be Fun
Finally, I think it's important to remind everyone that the purpose of the Revision3 forums is to provide the best and most engaging environment for fans of Revision3 to come together and discuss our shows and whatever else applies. We love our community and we love you specifically, as a member of our community.
When interacting with this community that you have volunteered to be a part of, remember to treat others as you'd want them to be treated. Use common sense and while everyone loves a flame war, think before you post or before you utilize speech that can be considered disrespectful or hate-filled. There is another person on the other end of your message and they have feelings too. And then there is a moderator, who is also a person who is volunteering their time, and they have feelings as well. "
I don't feel that the moderator in question provides the 'love' that this forum requires. Yes the banned user in question jested at the behalf of a moderator and was later accused in another thread by the moderator of providing 'spam' (this of course is in the realm of PMs) to users in form of a beta key.
But here's where the respect issue comes in. The moderator in question publicly TAUNTED a user who was soon banned. That's definitely not respectful of anyone and makes this user feel that his statements can easily be squashed by a bent-out-of-shape moderator.
Respect is earned - not given.

Look, it's no secret that Shadow is not one of my favorites around these parts so defending him is gonna be a tad off for me, but I'll try.
Shadow was acting like a twat, no one is discounting that. BUT I will also contend that people trolling worse has gone unpunished round these parts too.
Now, was token correct in dropping the banhammer? -Maybe... I mean... Shadow was kinda calling out the banhammer. But like I just said, I don't think he should have been, considering (AS AN EXAMPLE IT IS MY OPINION THAT) much of what Secret Steve Crumbles has said in the political threads is an attempt to spark argument and he's even been known to be offensive and homophobic.
So... warrented? Maybe not... Has there been some instances of banhammers being dropped without warrent? Yeah. Have worse comments been left untouched and unpunished? Yeah.
Should we drop this? Maybe, but I do think there should be some accountablilty on the mods/staff part in order to give the users some actual notion of what the bounds around here actually are and not the free-wheeling, LAPD style of rule of law.

Then ban him and move on. No need to have a witty remark or comment. Sure it might feel good to have a witty comeback or remark but it looks immature and power-driven.
And if the moderators can't be criticized maturely by a concerned user then well...Orwell would love this '1984'-style forum.

you are stating to confuse this place with a public forum. it is not. there is no free speech here. if you don't like the way things are run you have three options.

I don't think the forum is Orwellian at all.
It is if you can't form a thread about moderator behavior because of a concern of being banned.
There is a major difference between a trash the moderator thread:
Mod X Sucks cuz ______ and _______
and a thread asking why it was necessary for a user to be publicly taunted by a member of the admin team during a ban.
I understand that the moderators are humans just like you and me. But I don't understand why they can demean a user (troll or not) and not be questioned on it when they publicly announce a ban in such a manner.
If this was done in private and without public comment the user in question is just another banned user and my question/criticism would be moot

Its like comparing me to John Lennon because I wear glasses and sing in the shower.
It makes sense that you are upset that Token made a witty remark, and that you think he shouldn't have, but he was far from abusing his power. The ban was as warranted as every other ban they've ever made. All the mods here do a good job.

It's an open membership - anyone with an email address can access this forums. It's openly mentioned on rev3 forums - there is no $$$ to access this forum (as compared to Something Awful for example or Twit). The TOS includes provisions for spammers and trolls - fine no one likes either. That's not my issue.
My issue is the manner in which Tokenuser responded. Yes you probably didn't like NJS. But it didn't warrant the public jest at the banned user's expense. It's a bit immature in my opinion.

You can keep the discussion as long as you like. But you are seeing a single incident, and taking it as being isolated ... it is not.
1. Since he started writing for the tawkn blog, he has had a pattern of posting to his blog, then creating a thread over in the TRS forums to point back to his blog.
He received several warnings over this. The posts were deleted ... often after many of you reported them as being spam.
dolson is also a writer (the owner?) of the tawkn blog. Never been a problem there. So spamming forums is not a tawkn policy - it is all NJShadow.
2. He made a request to post a link back to the blog to advertise a competition. That request was posted to two moderators. We discussed in the uber secret moderator area. My response said it was spam, and suggested that he put a link to the competition/giveawy in his sig.
3. Ignoring the moderators, he tried to backdoor the same tread he wanted to create. I warned him publicly, not to backdoor it, or he will get banned.
4. He got up in arms over that in a PM. Thread in question was not locked. In the PM I told him not to push it ... but then he had to make the remark about thread locking.
That resulted in the ban. If he wanted to take the issue public, I was going to oblige.
Note that this is a 24 hour ban. It is not permanent. Others have said that based on a past history (that people who are up in arms are choosing to ignore) he should have gotten longer. he didn't. Its a slap over the wrist. A timeout.
Now - all that information is more than any of you needed to know.
You have a complaint about users trolling? Have you noticed that they go quiet for awhile? Sometimes that are banned temporarily? Probably not.
If you want to demonise someone as being the jackboot of corporate suppression in a regime of the online proletariate being silenced - go ahead. Use me as the scapegoat. NJShadow's anger (and that of those springing to his defense) might be directed towards me ... I can take it - but I did not act alone.
In the future, before becoming indignant ask yourself why there is very little spam in here. Ask why, as an online community we all get along fairly well. Moderators and admins are the janitors of a forum ... we keep it clean so you can enjoy yourself, and sometimes that means we need to kick someone out (temporarily or permanently).

The last few weeks we have seen unwarranted bans and alleged misconduct from the staff of this forum.
Not unwarranted according to those in charge.
I am here to question why there was blatant 'slippage' of the ban hammer
It was like Cop lingo. "You're going downtown." = Banhammer slipped.
So within 20 minutes or sometime in that period Token banned NJShadow AND proceeded to taunt the banned user PUBLICALLY.
Decisions to ban don't always happen immediately, if you aren't aware. We discuss these things. It was agreed upon by more than just Token.
Clearly this is as immature or out of line as anything a user could have done publicly.
NJ? Perhaps. Token? No.
And the ban hammer was so 'powerful' enough that the OP had to post an APOLOGY stating her non-intent to start a thread in the wrong forum. A moderator would later respond saying that she was fine.
There's nothing wrong with that thread, and if there was a problem it would have been dealt with in a civil manner. We are not your overlords, you do not have to apologize for doing "wrong" things. Post a spammy link, we'll ask you to remove. The trouble comes when people ignore us and do what they want.
Yes maybe you don't like a user's comments. Thats ok - I don't like some people's comments either - but I IGNORE IT or use that ignore feature.
You are confusing a difference in opinion with breaking the rules after being warned and then making snide remarks. We have never and will never ban people solely because their opinion may differ from ours.
If a user can be banned for joking over the lock wiffle bat then this forum has lost its intent - to be discussion for the viewer not the paid/unpaid moderating staff.
That's not why he was banned. Because it happened after that does not mean that is what caused it. As stated before, it was discussed and decided upon. That alone is not enough to ban - people have generally been displeased with me have been allowed to spread incorrect and libelous information about me. That alone may not do it, but along with other things it can help.
I don't believe that any of the Rev3 actual staff would agree with these power-hungry moderators' actions in the past weeks.
This is factually incorrect.

Just wondering - some of the spam posts were deleted. Had the user in question's statements about the 'lock bat' been deleted and there had been no public response would we be discussing this?
No. Because spam and that ilk is removed and deleted without comment mostly.
It's the classic question:
If a spammer is banned in a forum and no one sees his spam or crap- does anyone care?

I see. I thought the ban was a reaction to that post alone, as I hadn't seen any bad posts of NJShadow's for quite some time. Obviously, this was because, as you said, they were cleaned up before I got a chance to look at them (or I just didn't bother to check every obvious PS3 newsitem-thread present on the board).
