View Full Version : Torture: For Or Against?
It shouldn't be a debate, but it's been one in the American politics. Which side do you come down on?

What do you defien as torture? The US Government has such a "fluid" view of the topis, that is hard to actually quantify.
Definately against 90210.

I'm for a little torture, but only if there is a firmly agreed on safe word.

Against. Anyone tortured long enough will eventually say something, ANYTHING, and whether or not it's truth or just something said to make it stop is up in the air. Acting on what may be made up can be dangerous.

Annie? Ethan? Ty? Aw hell no. THIS is 90210:

And I'm kind of disturbed that Brenda has her hand in Brandon's pocket. Twincest!

And then Melrose came out and 90210 went downhill from there. I think the last good episode was Dylan's dad blowing up.

It unifies the photo. That's the hardest part of group portraits. I doubt there was any sexual undertones. It just makes it a better photo.

well that went no where fast. haha. But I agree with aria's in a nutshell post, and the ticking bomb scenario fits in that explanation, too. So don't even bother... ;)
Heck even mc cain cracked under torture, and he lied to make it stop. Just like anyone we torture would. But of course mc cain was against torture before he was for it...
and crumbles. Yes. Waterboarding is torture. and token, despite the subject matter, which makes me seethe, the "fluid" comment was friggen hilarious.

100% against. It is far too unreliable and inhumane. How are we (talking about "The First World" as a whole, since I'm Canadian) supposed to be the advance civilized society if we allow such a thing?
I'm against it for multiple reasons including the fact that it doesn't work as Aria pointed out but also because it's simply evil.

Mine's a bit more static as I would include things like Waterboarding and the "fluid" pun. :p
Definately against 90210.
That would probably qualify as cruel and unusual.

My eyes, my eyes!!! They burn, they burn -- OH the pain!!!!
You folks sure don't mess around with this torture business. My heart goes out to any unfortunate person who had to forcibly watch such horrors on television. :D :D

What's weird about torture debate? All the "cold warriors" who decried it as evil for the commies and facists are all for it when us Yanks do it.

I think a lot of it goes back to the insane reality that many of (and all of us sometimes) reason "narratively" based on what we see in popular culture. We assume that torture "works" because we see it work when Jack Bauer and Harry Callahan do it--even though the mountain of available evidence says it doesn't. Then we get testimony from a group of folks in Washington whose track record for telling the truth is not stellar and decide that desperate times call for desperate measures. There are reasons why we get to call ourselves the good guys, and until recently not torturing people was one of them.

It saddens me that this is even a debate.
Bush should go on trial for war crimes and if found guilty they need to throw his ass in jail. It's a bold statement but it's one I believe in. He was sworn into office to uphold and protect the constitution and he did the opposite of that.

At the very least Cheney should be in prison for treason after outing a CIA agent in war time. How these people can call themselves patriots is beyond me.

Bush should go on trial for war crimes and if found guilty they need to throw his ass in jail. No - he needs to declare his innocence, and be waterboarded until he signs a confession of his actions.

Agreed, since I don't agree with Gonzo that the Geneva Conventions are "quaint."
