Hi friends!

We've barely tipped the iceberg so far on the show----there is such a variety out there.

What would you like to see reviewed on the show?

Cola Wars ...

No, not Pepsi vs Coca Cola ...

Bottle vs Can vs Soda Fountain (vs Slurpee?) ... also throw in a bottle of Mexican Coke in there as well (sugar based, not corn syrup ... not as sweet).

There is a science to getting the syrup/soda water blend right, and too few restaurants pay it any attention resulting in sub optimal beverages.

If you want to latch onto a cause for your show, this is the one.

Forget global warming or a tanking economy, poorly calibrated soda machines are evil - and the public need to be educated on it.

also, is there any good "real" lemon/lime soda? I have given up on the famous ones. I LOVE lemon and/or Lime. Key Lime Pie, Lemon Merangue Pie, lemon drops, lemon yoghurt/custard...

but NO lemon/lime soda tastes like lemon at all. Just tastes like a sweet water with a hint of tangishness.

Tips for Badger ... (and Zack)

1. Ginger Beer - Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Brewed in Australia in the heart of Australian sugar cane country. No corn syrup involved. Awesome stuff ... and available at Costplus World Market.
2. French Lemonade - tastes like Australian Solo ... tart, lemony, and nice effervesence to it. Available at Trader Joe's.

BTW - on the Ginger Bear ... downunder, you can get Dark & Stormy ... Bundaberg ginger Bear brewed in the bottle with Bundaberg Rum (square bear). Goes does real well on a hot summer's day.

EDIT: Never mind, no Trader Joes out your way (they are down near NYC though), and no World Market in NY state.

I think a review of a few Arnold Palmer bottles are necessary. Or even DIY Arnold Palmers? Make it happen!I've only seen bottled Arnold Palmer from one company (Arizona Tea) ... are there others?

To be honest, the only one I ever tried and liked was the one they make at the Crocodile Cafe in Pasadena.

I have a question though ... what is the optimal ratio of iced tea to lemonade ... and since I like carbonated drinks, what about lemon soda instead of lemonade? Sweet vs unsweet tea?

And how do you do a controlled, objective experiment?

First: What is an Arnold Palmer? Educate me!

Second: We actually just shot an episode featuring a DIY lemon soda...it was so good.

I prefer my tea without sugar (see latest episode on my thoughts) BUT I think southern down home sweet tea is amazing with sugar...if you're going to go down that route load it up :)

The Arnold Palmer is a mix of half iced tea, half lemonade. Sometimes called a split or a 50/50 depending on the region.

If you can find Arizona Iced Teas locally, they have a version. Snapple do a Lemon Iced Tea, but the ratio is too strong on the tea for it to be an Arnold Palmer.

BTW - yes, named after the golfer. It was a favourite of his.

I hope that you add cough syrup to the taste comparison mix.

Root Beer must be one of those "cultural" flavours. Not something that I have ever met someone non-American like.

Now LL&B (lemon, lime and bitters) ... THERE is a cultural drink popular in places as diverse as Trinidad and Australia.

I'm going to warn you its an acquired taste but Malta is basically a malted soda that's very popular amongst those in the Caribbean (Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Ghanaian, etc.). It's rich and sweet (at least to me, others who have tried it have hated it) but it'll make full so don't plan on cramming in a big meal after it.

Have you ever thought of doing a near-beer segment? Non alcoholic beer? I need to quit/slow down on the beers, so it might actually be a service, but then again, you two are too young to drink, so you could only say what you like, but not compared to "real" beer. Just a thought. Maybe in a few years. Or have a guest host(s) do it. (Kevin and Alex, maybe?)

Non-alcoholic beer tastes terrible. No one is drinking beer for the taste, so if you don't want the alcohol you're better off elsewhere. Says me, anyways.

At the liquor store I used to work at we sold "Non-alcoholic wine". I guess it's pretty much just sparkling juice or soda. I always thought that was hilarious.

1/2 cup plain yoghurt
1 1/4 cups cold water
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp finely crumbled mint

Blend in a blender for 3 seconds. Serve cold.

There's also a popular variant of this that uses Mango as well. just add a cup of chopped mango into the blender as well. awesome drink, really refreshing on a hot day.

xibby twittered he was drinking hot chocolate with a tiny drop of very hot sauce in it. Kinda sounds intriguing? You guys ever heard of that? Not so odd. I have had mexican hot chocolate served like that. I am not a hot drink person, but the couple of drops of tobasco added a kick.

I used to go to a local farmers market in Melbourne (Glen Waverly actually) where a small company ("Redback Chili Co"?) sold a Lemon Cordial Syrup (Americans - think Lemonade Concentrate you add water or seltzer to). On my first trip to New Orleans (mid 90's), my GF (now wife) and I discovered the New Orleans Cooking School and their provisions store down by the river. It was amazing (we took a cooking class there on our last day in the US before heading back to Australia).

Anyway, she was looking around the store ... and i discovered their hot sauce selection. That had samples running the width of the store. I started at the mild end and worked my way up to the "OMG!!! THE BURNING!!! MAKE IT STOP" end. She still tells the story of me running up to her, my face bright red, sweat puring off my forehead, mumbling something about going to the icecream shop to get a milkshake ASAP, then running out of the store.

OK. I now know that alcohol (Vodka or mouth wash) would have been the fix (disolve the capsacin in alcohol, then spit it out), not milk. I was young(er) and naiive.

I still like spicy food (garlic tabasco is a favourite) - and like nothing better than a Thai Green Chicken Curry ... but you can keep your hotter than hades hot sauces :)

DUDE!! That place sounds awesome, I love hot sauce! Unfortunately though, it's not very popular here :(Yeah, I find that odd in Japanese cooking as well. Sure, they have wasabi (and there is nothing better than fresh grated wasabi ... not that luminous green horseradish based stuff that gets passed off as wasabi), but spicy isn't really a Japanese thing.

Its odd considering that the rest of SE Asia has a chili fetish.

BTW - I got the title slightly wrong ... it is the New Orleans School of Cooking (http://www.neworleansschoolofcooking.com/). If you go to the "shop" part of their website, "Joe's Stuff" is my general purpose goto seasoning for just about everything, be it creole, cajun, or italian. Thier online store doesn't have half the stuff they sell in their brick and mortar place.

I like hot to be 'spicy'. Here's my favorite recipe. And I'm remarkably good at cooking it.

http://alaskalonewolf.tumblr.com/post/22569063/favorite-alaskan-recipes

...although you can add a second bottle of tabasco, and additional
jalepenos if you want. The recipe is kinda a starting point. You can
always make it hotter, in my opinion, but sometimes it ruins the taste;
it's kinda' hard to un-hot a dish when you overdo it. I ran into the
problem one time when I used Habanero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habanero)s instead of a Jalapeno (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jalape%C3%B1o)s
I figured out the difference between them the hard way.

Tends to be kinda' expensive if you live outside of Alaska.
I'm kinda' spoiled, cause all it means for me is a measley
road-trip to see my bros and do some heli-boarding (http://www.alaskabackcountry.com/) at
Thompson Pass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valdez,_Alaska). They always know where to get the best
fresh ingredients from the markets. It's an excellent dish to
serve by fireside after a relaxing hot-tub/sauna to end the
day of snowboarding the higher-side of the hill. The absolute
best beer to go with it is, of course, Corona (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_(beer)) with a slice of lime.

Since winter is approaching, I've noticed quite a few different brands of hot cocoa and apple cider popping up at my grocery store. Maybe review/compare a few of those?

I hate to say it, but where's the COFFEE?? There's been teas galore (and I understand that it has been very beneficial (http://www.oceanoftea.com/pages/Tea-Videos.html) ), but there are so many store brands of coffee that we can get tastes of now.

I'd like to try Chock full o' Nuts (http://www.chockfullonuts.com/) , but I'm not jumping in without a recommendation. (hmmm, I can't think of anything witty to say now).

The very rare times I go to Starbucks I get the white chocolate mocha (http://www.starbucks.com/retail/nutrition_beverage_detail.asp?selProducts=%7B22A84 072-9897-4186-84A4-56C9BBCFBD20%7D). It really is a dessert. Love it. I wanna learn to make it at home and save myself their exorbitant prices. And maybe a healthier version. A discussion with recipes (http://www.coffeeforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1204) is here.

It's been a while since anyone suggested anything new, and since you're back from your hiatus, here's something I've been holding out on till you got back:

Have you guys tried anything from Lorina? (http://www.lorina.com/uk/fla/home_us.html) I've never had any of their stuff till my aunt got me a bottle as a Christmas gift. I thought I'd hold off on it till New Year's and try that instead of sparkling cider or champagne.

I was impressed. It's really good stuff! They have a bunch of flavors, and you can review whatever you can find, but I've only had their blueberry lemonade so far, and now I can't wait to get the others. If you can find their blueberry lemonade, be sure to also snag a bottle of that.

Great find. We'll look into it :)

blueberry lemonade sounds odd but nice, refreshing summer drink episode, perhaps?

Its a lot like the Lemon Squash I used to drink back home.

Some think it taste like Italian soda, but the flavour is a little more "integrated" <?> and doesn't taste like syrup was added to sparkling water.

Well, it's not a drink, but I just read this post on Lifehacker. Brew the best possible coffee without breaking the bank (http://lifehacker.com/5143755/brew-the-best-possible-coffee-without-breaking-the-bank), and there are some interesting products in the comments, including an AeroPress. Might be worth looking into that, maybe comparing to a french press or something.

I am intrigued by the aeropress. I would also like to see some sort of comparison to see if it's really any better than a french press (or at least some sort of side by side to see if the hosts can tell the difference in flavor). I also found it funny that the company that makes aeropress makes a coffee press and frisbees. That's what I call diversification.
