Ok so I'm currently having a problem with my CD/DVD drive. I've tried un/reinstalling the drivers and removing/replacing the cd/dvd drive but all to no avail. Now let me explain what happens. My drive will read certain cd's. And then randomly it will decide other cd's are impossible to read. And it's very rare that a dvd works in the drive.

Is this a system error or is it just I have a bad drive?

I'm gonna say bad drive. Have you got another drive you can try, or another machine you can put that drive in?

Sounds like what I went through when I got a new PC couple years ago.

Try to see if the codec it came with is Sonic(usually is)..uninstall it then install this codec.

No problems since and ran into people having the same issue and this usually fixes it.

Hope this helps.:)

I'd say bad drive ... but also add ...

Are the CDs and DVDs you are trying to read originals or burnt discs? Some drives have trouble with duplicated media ... even stuff they burnt themselves.

Get yourself a new drive. They are cheap (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228).

Lol I might add that my computer is a laptop with a removable cd/dvd drive. The Dell Latitude D610. Anyone ever had problems with these?

Call Dell.

Before you call dell:
Does the cd spin up if you put media in it or is the drive attached properly?
Is the drive enabled in the bios?
If you are using windose, does the device manager see the drive?
Does the cd spin up if you put media in it
if the answer is yes to all three question then in fact call Dell.

"sudo lshw" is a great tool for command line linux users.
