View Full Version : What superpower would you want?

A couple weeks ago on my silly humor blog (Say No to Crack (http://www.saynotocrack.com/)), I posted the following question:

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?

The answers were pretty fun, so I thought I'd post the same question here to get a feel for the group (I'm a noob here). My answer was immortality, figuring that if I lived long enough someone would probably invent things that would replicate what we consider "super" today.

Looking forward to your responses!

The power to destory all life on earth with a single thought and don't think I wouldn't use it either. Might be a bit demented but whatever thats just me.

Remind me note to vote for you next time you decide to run for public office ... or if you're already in public office, remind me not to vote against you ;)

Also I wouldn't mind the power to turn into a squirrel. A giant thousand foot indestructible one. That would be nice as well.

This is an interesting question. It's sort of the same as what three wishes would you ask of the genie. Do I wish for money or long-life.

Superpowers.

1. Flying - Fun and practical.

2. Languages - I've often wanted to be able to speak, read and understand every language. I feel that I have a lot to say and I could help everyone if they could understand me.

3. Teleportation - I hate my commute to work. I wish I could get out of bed 10 minutes before my first class and *poof* I'm there. I wonder if I can work in a quick shower.

Did you ever read "The Fermata" by Nicholson Baker? This guy didn't use the power for good.

Flying would be my number one choice with no hesitation. :D

Flying would be my number one choice with no hesitation. :DTeleporting or telekinesis - with apropriate strength in either of these, it would be as good as flying, but far more useful ...

Flying has limitations - Superman needs an open window to land ... with teleporting, you can move through walls ... and with telekinesis, you could lift yourself (as if you were flying), but could also move other objects. Either of these are superior to flying :)

I want this one right now. I'd do something bad with it though.

Teleportation ,telekinesis, immortality, invincibility, creating life from nothing, complete and perfect knowledge of everything, invisibility, ability to to time travel, and super strength. In other words basically becoming a god.

I have to disagree with you... I'd rather be flying like a bird or Superman just on principle... there is something that would seem more "real" to me (if that makes any sense, haha) about flying versus teleporting. And i'll definitely admit that telekinesis has some serious benefits, but i'd still rather fly -- but i couldn't complain about having both! :D

Edit: another thing i just thought of is that if i'm going to have a superpower, i'll still need some challenges ;)

Teleportation ,telekinesis, immortality, invincibility, creating life from nothing, complete and perfect knowledge of everything, invisibility, and super strength. In other words basically God.
I'll leave the God part alone, because thats a matter of opinion / faith. But the immortality i have to disagree with... that just sounds like a terrible idea to me; imagine how bored you would get from time to time -- especially if all your friends were dying! And the gravest indignity of it would be that you could not kill yourself if / when you felt like it.

And complete and perfect knowledge of everything would be a disappointment if you ask me, life would be terribly boring (especially if you were immortal) for one thing, and secondly, living without any surprises may not be worth living. If i knew exactly where i was and what i would be doing in 40 years, i'd spend the entire time between now and then trying to change it! It also would be something of a deterministic life, and that is not something i'm comfortable with, especially because one of the books i'm currently reading is: Elbow Room: The Variety of Free Wills Worth Wanting by Daniel Dennett. I edited it alittle and added time traveling, that way ya would never be lonely could go back in time and see friends anytime ya want then. :)
and I would be happy just watching time go by and even if I knew what was to happen nothing like seeing it live.

After lots of thinking I did on this subject earlier today, I've settled on the ability to stop time, if for no other reason that I could use it to sleep and essentially be awake all the time.

But flying is a close second.

Interesting... i kind of like it. A question it made wonder is, when you restart time, can you be somewhere other than you were when stopped, or do you have to restart in the same position?

All of the above. :)

I would probably want to be able to control the elements. It's nice because it covers a couple of the main super powers people want.

Wind - flying
Fire - destruction
Earth - life/invisibility(see below)
Water/Ice - awesomeness(see Ice surfing)

Invisibility could be achieved by using the earth power to blend in with your surroundings.

Of course I'm missing being able to see through objects, but with powers like these, it's almost irrelevant.

Probably control over the laws of physics. I could do pretty much anything I wanted/needed with a power that general and potent.

Or, if I were feeling whimsical when powers were being given out, the power to make anyone urinate wildly whenever I wanted. It's good for keeping me amused, but not really useful for saving the world or anything. So if I had Superbowl tickets and some nutjob villain started plundering New York, nobody's expecting me to skip the game and save anyone.

Geez, why don't you throw in god-like omnipotence while your at it. Better yet, my super-power is to create other super-powers.

Yeah, pure power over the laws of physics sounds like saying you want the God superpower, although it would be cool.

Maybe I'd just take the human tornado for a couple days. That would be pretty funny to go to the mall and whip up some twisters in the food court

The power to automatically drop the amount of spam on this forum by 50% would be great, then we'd only be busy all day...

It'd be great if I had the power to automatically spawn 50 new members join the forum everyday that didn't get on each other's nerves and want to kill each other.

Finally, the power to have peace on the forums, that's be a good one.

Oh and the power to remember to use soap.
