So, does anyone intend to actually buy a Zume? I don't know a lot about them yet, but I am curious to know if anyone intends to be an early adopter or if you are gonna hang on to your iPod, until more is known about how the two compare.
Me personally, I'll likely stick with my iPod, because it's made by Apple and I personally feel a good bit of disdain for Micro$oft.

I am sure that just like the iPod, all sorts of hardware and software hacks will become rapidly available for the Zume if it catches on, and one of the earliest is bound to be something to make it work with *nix.
I am curious, why are you gonna ditch the iPod? Have you found a player you like better? I've always got an eye open for better products, but I have to say that overall, the iPod is hard to beat. (in my opinion)

No, I don't think I'll buy anything from Microsoft. I'm perfectly fine with the iPod I currently own.

That's pretty much how I feel.
I've always wanted to buy an XBox just to mess around with it, there are so many good mods and so much potential, but I don't want to fork any more money over to Microsoft.

That's one of the things I do love about my iPod... It has survived ACTUAL Combat. I don't have any kind of case or cover for it, I just throw it in a pocket or in my ruck.

My bad... Thanks for the correction...
zune does lend itself well to the intended quasi-humorous nature of my post title...

Zume? You mean Zune. ;)
Anyways, I think MS messed up by announcing a $249.99 price. When faced with choosing a 30gig Zune vs a 30gig iPod at the same price, 90%+ will choose the iPod.
But if the Zune were $199.99 then that iPod % would be down to probably 65%
Edit: Oh and is that Zen Vision M really as great as the reviews say it is.... the whole xvid/divx support would be enough for me. No need to convert my downloaded files to mp4, just drag and drop! Woo!

The Zune looks neat, but I think I'll wait to see the "true" video iPod. Or I'll just use my 3rd gen iPod for the rest of its life. :p

I had never even heard of the Zen Vision M. I will have to look into it. Seems popular.
Once I have time and extra money, i'll for sure buy it. You have to give microsoft a chance at this type of thing.

I have to admit, not all of Microsoft's products are crap. I still don't like the idea though of putting more money into their hands, I really think they just don't care about consumer satisfaction or general ethics any more.
I sometimes think the whole Bill & Melinda Gates foundation thing is just an effort by Bill to balance out his Karma. He's getting older you know...

Microsoft deserve every cent they make from every product they sell. They will sell Zunes, and the public will use them, even if the Zune's market is just the people who don't like ipods.
Microsoft have never done anything wrong by anyone.
Even so, I wouldn't buy a Zune.
The market for ipods, and even creatives, are way to big for microsoft to kill them off, but its nice to see them trying.

Will I Zune? No - I am more than happy with my iPod.
I was actually gonna wait to buy an ipod when i saw the zune. but once they released any promising reviews I changed my mind and decided to go ahead and buy an iPod.

iPod already has their name out there incredibly well and people know it. The Zune is going to have to fight past Apple's incredible leverage before they'll get people choosing it instead.
I think the casual consumer with go after iPod because they know the name. Plus, we know about the Zune and all it's specs because we're all geeks :) . You're average person would probably go "Zune..what?" I think M$ has a tough fight ahead, but they *could* pull it off.

As of right now NO, due to the fact mac's won't be compatible on launch. But if it's anything like the xbox 360's user experience then I'm all in. Hands down thats a great product.

I just bought an Conwon iAUDIO X5L a few months ago.
Within a week, after seeing a comprehensive review (http://www.epizenter.net/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?3770.post) comparing it with a Creative ZEN Vision: M (complete with audio 3D spectograph analysis, for goodness sakes!) I immediately had buyer's remorse, returned the X5L and got a ZVM, which I have enjoyed greatly and not regretted in doing so.
The Zune doesn't impel me to dump my ZVM. The 30GB ZVM has been price matched with the similar iPod, both of which the Zune now costs less than.
Were I in the market for a new player, I'd have to hear and use the Zune. Just from looking at the specs, I absolutely does NOT give me a second thought about letting go of my ZVM. NO WAY!
One real problem is the glossy surface of the ZVM, which you would want to protect from scrathes with one of these (http://www.bestskinsever.com/servlet/the-Music--fdsh--Media-Players-cln-Creative/Categories) from bestskinsever.com--and order it so you can stick it on your ZVM as soon as you take the ZVM out of the box!

Here's my problem... while I love my iPod and iTunes, I do not like how they slap a DRM lock on every single thing I buy. Especially considering this is easily defeatable if you burn your purchases to CD. So why the heck can't they just leave them DRMless in the first place? It's costly and time-consuming to burn that many CDs.
If the reports of Zune's music being DRM free are true, then I will think long and hard about switching... especially if it has a screen larger than a postage stamp to view video upon, which is my iPod's failing.
I will buy it even though I hate Microsoft. Because in the end, I want my hardware to do what *I* want it to.

I somewhat agree with you. I don't know that I'd go so far as to say they have never done anything wrong to anyone. I'd say we could find a laundry list of things that they've done. Of course the same could be said of nearly any corporate entity. But isn't the continual release of shitty products with poor QA a bad thing? Perhaos not... after all they do manage to sell all those shitty products.
Hopefully Apple and *nix will continue to eat away at the cancer that is Micro$oft.

No. Just simply no, why? Because I will use it to review it. But Microsoft is just trying to get a quick buck going after Apple. They might get a 1% market share, but Apple is still going to have more than 80% market share. Apple's only REAL competition is Creative and they (Creative) has better products than Apple. Microsoft is just going to be laughed at.

I'm planning on waiting for the second generation of the Zune, and then comparing the state of the iPod vs. Zune THEN. Whoever has the best functionality and features (and software) will win.

I will Zune. Mostly because I don't like the battery life on my regular 5G iPod, it's old and scratched, I want something new, and I HATE DRM. The 3" screen is just a bonus. :D

I think the zune will have a tough time at first. Much like the first XBox. It was popular but not as popular as the established Sony Playstation. But look at it now, the 360 is dominating, and i assume will continue too post wii and ps3 release. But i love my iPod. I use it everyday. It suits me well. And i am not going to watch movies on it. The longest vid i watch is Diggnation, and i am fine with it. So in a short answer, no i will not be getting a Zune.
